LONG DISTANCE QUESTIONS
How fast will a long distance move from San Diego arrive?
Within 200 miles, including Los Angeles, it is delivered the same day it is loaded. Beyond that the truck covers 550 miles a day starting the day after we load, so Las Vegas and Phoenix are day 2, Denver and Portland day 3, Seattle and Dallas day 4, and the far Northeast day 7. Your written quote states the day for your address.
Is the long distance price really a flat rate?
Yes. One flat rate, agreed in writing before we load, covering the whole move door to door. It is not an hourly clock, not a weight ticket you see afterward, and there is no deposit at any point. The rate you sign is the rate you pay.
Are you a broker or the actual carrier?

Do you move cars, or load containers and PODs?
No. We do not offer vehicle transport, container or POD transport, or international moves. What we do is full-service interstate household moving on our own trucks, which is why the flat rate can be locked before we load.

Federal Rules On Every Interstate Lane
Any move that crosses a state line, on any of the five lanes above, falls under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's interstate rules. The FMCSA requires every interstate household goods mover to be registered with the federal government and to hold a U.S. DOT number, and its Search for a Registered Mover tool shows whether a company is registered, carries insurance, is authorized to transport household goods and has a complaint history. Run that check on us under US DOT #4372335 and on any other company you are comparing.
Registered and authorized are not the same status. The FMCSA states that a company may be registered but not authorized to move household goods, so read the household goods authority line rather than stopping at the DOT number. Written estimates come in two federal kinds. A binding estimate is a written agreement made in advance that guarantees the total cost based on the quantities and services it lists. A non-binding estimate is the mover's belief of what the cost will be, based on estimated weight, and it is not binding on the mover. The mover cannot require you to pay more than 110 percent of that estimate at delivery. Our flat rate is agreed in writing before we load, so the figure you sign is the figure at the door in every state.
Valuation Before The Truck Loads
Every interstate shipment travels under one of two valuation levels, and the choice is made on the bill of lading before loading, not after a claim. Under Full Value Protection the mover carries the fuller liability, and the FMCSA notes that a shipment is automatically transported at this level unless you select the other option in writing. Its cost and any deductible vary by mover, and the mover may limit its responsibility for items of extraordinary value, defined by value per pound, unless you list them specifically on the shipping documents.
Released Value Protection costs nothing extra, but the FMCSA describes the protection as minimal. The mover's liability is capped at a set amount per pound per article, which the agency illustrates with a 50 inch television example. To take it you must sign a specific statement on the bill of lading agreeing to it. Decide before moving day which level fits a seven-day trip to the Northeast or a same-day run to Los Angeles, and have it written down alongside the flat rate.
Military Orders Out Of San Diego
Service members leaving San Diego on permanent change of station orders have a federal option that fits a flat-rate carrier: the personally procured move. Military OneSource describes a full PPM, where you are responsible for transporting all of your household goods, and a partial PPM, where you move part of the load and a moving company takes the rest. An actual cost reimbursement PPM is authorized only when a government-provided mover is not available or cannot meet your requirements, and it requires written pre-approval from your Transportation Office before you book.
Reimbursement is based on the actual weight of goods you transport, verified with weight tickets, and cannot exceed your authorized weight entitlement. You have 45 days from the planned move start date to turn in the paperwork, including weight tickets, vehicle registration, moving receipts and other documents, to your local transportation office. Ask that office exactly which documents it wants from a commercial carrier before you sign a quote, and keep every page of the written flat rate and the bill of lading for the file.
The tax side is narrower than most people expect. The IRS allows active-duty members of the Armed Forces, moving under military orders incident to a permanent change of station, to deduct unreimbursed moving expenses or exclude reimbursed ones. The figure is worked out on Form 3903 and taken as an adjustment to income. Qualifying costs include household goods, personal effects, storage and travel including lodging, but not meals. The IRS topic covers the Armed Forces and the Intelligence Community, so if you are not moving on orders, do not plan on a deduction without reading it first.
Mail And The Delivery Day
Because the delivery day on every lane is arithmetic, you can time the post office change of address to it. USPS states that mail forwarding may begin within 3 business days of a submitted request but advises allowing up to 2 weeks. A Denver move delivered on day 3 or a Raleigh move delivered on day 6 therefore needs the request filed before the truck is loaded, not after you arrive. Set the start date to the day you leave the San Diego address, so nothing lands at an empty house behind you.
If the new state is a trial rather than a decision, USPS offers a temporary change of address for a relocation lasting from 15 days up to 1 year. When any forwarding period ends, the post office returns mail to the sender for 6 months with a label carrying your new address. That is the window in which to update banks, the DMV in the new state and anyone who still has the San Diego address on file.
