Who Can Drive the Rental Truck
On a labor-only job you drive the truck and we handle what goes in and out of it, so the first question is whether your license covers the truck you booked. It usually does. The California DMV's motor carrier permit FAQ states that two-axle daily rental trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating under 26,001 pounds, operated in non-commercial use, do not require a commercial driver license or a Motor Carrier Permit. Confirm the truck's rating with the rental counter before you sign.
California also puts the load itself on the driver. Vehicle Code section 23114 says a vehicle may not be driven or moved on any highway unless it is constructed, covered or loaded so that no part of its contents can drop, sift, leak, blow or spill out. For a box truck that means the roll-up door closes fully and nothing rides loose against it. For an open trailer or pickup it means a tarp and tie-downs. Pads and straps are part of the load, so if you want them used, have them in the truck when the crew arrives.
Containers, Curb Space and the 72-Hour Rule
A rented container is loaded like a truck, but where it sits is a City question. Inside City of San Diego limits, Development Services Information Bulletin 718 requires a Traffic Control Permit when a temporary storage container or dumpster encroaches into the public right of way, including the sidewalk, under San Diego Municipal Code section 129.0702. The application is Form DS-269 with a traffic control plan, filed online with DSD, and the City wants at least three working days' notice before placement. The permit holder posts the Tow-Away and No Parking signs 72 hours ahead. Other cities in the county set their own rules.
The rental truck has a clock on it too. The City's parking FAQ says no vehicle may be parked continuously at one location on any public roadway for more than 72 hours, and a vehicle that has not moved at least one-tenth of a mile in 72 consecutive hours counts as stored and can be cited or towed under Municipal Code section 82.30(a)(1). If you pick up the truck days before the crew comes, or it sits full while you wait on keys, move it. A driveway or a lot you have permission to use is not a public roadway.
Booking a Load-Only or Unload-Only Crew
Labor bookings run on the same crew ladder as our full moves: 2 movers $119 an hour cash, 3 movers $169, 4 movers $219, 5 movers $269, with $10 an hour more on card and a three-hour minimum on every crew size. Crews are available 8am–8pm every day of the week, and there is never a deposit to book. Tell us the truck or container size, the number of rooms, and whether the job is a load, an unload or both, and we will tell you which crew size fits. Time beyond the minimum is billed at the same hourly rate.
What we need from you on the day is simple. Have the truck or container in place with the door facing the shortest clear path to the entrance, the walkway free of anything the crew would have to step around, and the boxes closed and labeled before the crew arrives. If the truck is a one-way rental due back the same day, book the crew for the morning so the drive and the return are not squeezed against the 8pm end of our day. We load and unload containers you have rented from any provider, but we do not transport the container itself, and we do not haul vehicles.
