TWO PENINSULAS, ONE LONG WINTER

Detroit (~2,350 miles) and Ann Arbor (~2,310) sit at the far end of the I-15 to I-70 run, with the last leg into lower Michigan coming off I-69, US-23 or I-75 depending on the city; Grand Rapids (~2,240) turns northwest across lower Michigan earlier. All three cities are delivered on day 6. Winter is the calendar’s main event. Lake-effect bands off Lake Michigan can bury the western counties while Detroit stays merely cold, which is why a January delivery date is planned around the forecast rather than padded with a spare day.

The auto industry still writes Detroit’s relocation story. Engineering and design roles keep pulling talent into the metro and Ann Arbor adds the university and a dense research corridor. Grand Rapids and the west side of the state make up the rest of the Michigan addresses we see on this route. Older Michigan housing means basements, and basements mean stairs; flag anything oversized headed down one and we’ll plan the path before load day.

Spring Thaw And The Straits

TWO STATEWIDE CONDITIONS THAT SHAPE A MICHIGAN DELIVERY

Michigan posts seasonal weight restrictions each spring, commonly called frost laws, when roadbeds that froze over the winter thaw from the surface down and the pavement temporarily loses its support. The state transportation department reduces allowable axle weights on state highways designated seasonal while leaving all-season routes unrestricted, and county road commissions and city public works departments post their own local roads separately. Restrictions come off as the roadbeds regain strength, so the posting map in April is not the posting map in May.

The restricted stretch on a spring delivery is usually the last piece of local road into a rural or newer-subdivision address rather than the highway itself. That is why we confirm the final approach before delivery day instead of treating the whole run as one road.

Michigan is also two separate peninsulas, and the Mackinac Bridge, carrying I-75 between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace, is the single road link between them. An Upper Peninsula delivery is planned around that one crossing, which can close in high wind or falling ice with no road detour available. So the first question on a northern address is which side of the Straits it sits on, and that question gets asked at the estimate rather than on the road.

Who Controls The Curb

DETROIT, GRAND RAPIDS AND ANN ARBOR EACH RUN CURB SPACE THROUGH A DIFFERENT OFFICE

Detroit requires a permit from the City Engineering Division of its Department of Public Works, under Detroit Code Section 43, Division 2, before construction work in a street, alley, sidewalk or berm and before temporarily occupying a lane, street or sidewalk with equipment; the city's own examples of the occupancy category are cranes and construction equipment, dumpsters, filming and special events, and the applying contractor must carry a $2,500 surety bond with the City of Detroit before any right-of-way work is done. Grand Rapids takes requests to reserve on-street metered spaces for a move and puts no-parking covers on the meters for the reserved dates and times; the city handles this through its Mobile GR department, and requests must be submitted a set number of business days before the reservation.

Ann Arbor issues right-of-way and lane-closure permits through the city's engineering office, along with barricade and sidewalk occupancy permits, and metered curb space is reserved through a meter bag request. A traffic control permit is required to impact a lane of traffic, and Ann Arbor Engineering's published lead time is 72 hours for a standard traffic control request, rising to at least 10 business days when the work is a full lane or road closure that needs a posted detour route. Three cities, three departments, three lead times, and none of them are same-day counters. That is the reason the truck's parking spot is worked out when the estimate is written rather than the week the crew arrives. Most metro Detroit deliveries are not in the city of Detroit at all, and suburbs such as Troy, Royal Oak, Novi, Warren, Sterling Heights and Farmington Hills each run their own curb and permit rules, so we check the municipality your address actually sits in rather than applying Detroit rules to it.

The Last Few Turns

A DETROIT ADDRESS SITS CLOSE TO AN INTERNATIONAL BORDER CROSSING

Detroit sits on an international border, and freeway ramps in and near downtown feed directly onto the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel toward Canada. Wrong-turn entries into the border approach are a reported, recurring problem rather than a rare mishap, and once a vehicle is in the crossing traffic stream there is no place to turn around. For that reason the last few turns into a Detroit address get confirmed in advance rather than left to a phone screen in the cab.

The approach question does not stop at the freeway. Much of Detroit was platted before 1930 with service alleys running behind residential blocks, and many houses still have a detached garage facing the alley rather than the street. Alley surface and clearance vary block to block, so we settle in advance whether the working approach on delivery day is the street curb or the rear alley.

Flats, Stairs, Third Floors

WHAT DETROIT'S OLDER HOUSING ASKS OF A CREW

Detroit's residential stock is heavily brick and low-rise, and a substantial share of older blocks were built as the two-story two-family flat: one building with two front doors and a separate upper unit reached by its own stair. On a flat the constraint is almost always the interior stair turn to the upper unit rather than the room the piece ends up in, which is a different measurement than the one most people take.

Indian Village and Boston-Edison are Detroit historic districts of large early twentieth century houses on wide boulevards, many with third floors, rear service stairs and separate carriage houses. In these homes volume is rarely the issue. The third-floor stair, the narrow back stair and the original woodwork are what the crew plans around, and a larger crew for that kind of carry is sized at the estimate and included in the flat rate.

Corktown's historic district is built on narrow lots with houses set close together, including rowhouses and small detached workers' cottages that run from the front sidewalk back to an alley. Narrow lots mean short curb frontage and a tight side yard, and those two details decide where the truck can sit and how far the carry runs.

Slope And Frontage

GRAND RAPIDS AND ANN ARBOR ADDRESSES WE ASK ABOUT BY NAME

Heritage Hill in Grand Rapids is a historic district on a rise immediately east of downtown, with nineteenth and early twentieth century houses, a street grid that follows the slope, and stone retaining walls between sidewalk and yard. A sloped approach and a set of retaining-wall steps are the two access details worth flagging before delivery day, because both change how the truck is positioned and how the carry is staffed.

Ann Arbor's Old West Side is a residential historic district of mostly wood-frame houses, typically two stories with wide front porches, set on city lots that are narrow in width with deep back yards. Narrow lots and tree-lined streets mean the truck usually works from the street rather than a driveway, which puts the meter bag request and the curb reservation back in the picture.

Ann Arbor's rental calendar is set by the University of Michigan, and student-market leases turn over in a compressed stretch of late August rather than spreading through the year. The city runs a dedicated Student Move In/Out program for that stretch, with extra drop-off sites for discarded furniture and trash, which is a fair measure of how concentrated the turnover is. If your delivery date lands in that stretch, the curb is the scarce resource, not the calendar.

One Counter, Two Errands

LICENSE AND PLATES WORK DIFFERENTLY HERE THAN IN CALIFORNIA

Michigan runs driver licensing and vehicle title and registration through the same agency, the Secretary of State, at its branch offices. The two errands a newcomer from California is used to splitting between two agencies are one office here, which is worth knowing before you plan the week after delivery. A new resident has 30 days after establishing residency to register an out-of-state vehicle, and Michigan prices a passenger vehicle registration on the vehicle's original list price rather than a flat fee, so ask the Secretary of State for your own figure rather than assuming a California-style flat charge.

Michigan operates a no-fault auto insurance system and requires Michigan no-fault coverage to be in force before a vehicle can be registered, with proof presented to the Secretary of State. Since the 2019 reform took effect for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2020, the personal injury protection medical benefit is a choice rather than one fixed level: $50,000 for Medicaid enrollees, $250,000, $500,000 as the default when nothing is elected, and unlimited, plus an opt-out for drivers covered by Medicare. A Californian should expect to make an election at the counter rather than buy a single standard policy, which is a structural difference a newcomer meets at registration rather than anything we advise on.

Michigan does not run a periodic safety inspection program or an emissions testing program for ordinary passenger vehicles, so a routine plate transfer does not involve a test appointment. The Secretary of State can still require a VIN inspection on an out-of-state vehicle when the ownership record is unclear, and on salvage and rebuilt titles, and that inspection is performed by a law enforcement officer on form TR-54 rather than at the branch counter.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a 26 ft box truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

What We Do Not Do

Worth saying plainly, because the alternative is finding out late. We do not do international moves. We do not ship containers or portable storage pods. We do not transport cars, boats or motorcycles, and we cannot take one on the truck alongside the household goods. The one exception is a golf cart, which we do move; see our golf cart moving service.

What we do is household goods, in our own trucks, with our own crews, as the carrier rather than a broker reselling the job. If your move needs something on that first list, we would rather tell you now than take the booking and hand you a problem at the curb.

Why The Delivery Is A Date And Not A Window

Ask any long-distance mover for the delivery date and listen to whether you get a date or a window. A two week window usually means the load has not been placed with a driver yet, and the company quoting you does not know who will actually be driving.

Ours is arithmetic. We cover about 550 miles a day, counted from the day AFTER we load, because load day is a working day rather than a driving one. That gives a date, and it is the date on the paperwork. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day we load.
