At about 2,980 miles to Burlington, this is close to the longest run on our board — essentially corner to corner across the country, I-80/I-90 most of the way and I-89 up the spine of the state. Two Vermont-specific things affect planning. First, winter: the interstates are well maintained, but rural hill roads narrow quickly in snow. Second — and this is the one out-of-staters never see coming — mud season. From roughly March through May, Vermont towns post weight limits on unpaved roads as frost leaves the ground, and a fully loaded moving truck can be legally barred from a posted road. If your new place is up a dirt road, spring deliveries sometimes finish with a smaller shuttle truck for the last stretch; we flag that possibility in the quote, not at the curb.
Vermont has periodically offered relocation incentive grants to new residents and remote workers — worth checking the state’s current programs before you move. And one legal note movers have to enforce: Vermont restricts bringing untreated firewood into the state to slow invasive pests, so the wood pile stays in California. Houseplants are generally fine on this route.
