Alabama splits by destination: Mobile (~1,934 miles) stays on I-10 to the Gulf, Birmingham (~1,990) arrives via I-20, and Huntsville (~2,024) comes up I-65 into the Tennessee Valley. All three are day 5. Huntsville is the headline. Redstone Arsenal, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and the aerospace-and-defense cluster around them keep hiring out of California’s engineering pool.

Gulf humidity is the packing note for the whole state: wood furniture and instruments arriving from bone-dry California will acclimate. Give pianos a few weeks before re-tuning, and let solid-wood pieces settle before judging a sticky drawer. Hurricane season runs June through November and we watch the Gulf through it, but no part of Alabama is exempt from a tropical system. Hurricane Zeta came ashore on October 28, 2020 and carried hurricane-force winds inland, with gusts of 50 to 70 mph recorded across south-central and east-central Alabama and about 494,000 Alabama Power customers out statewide on the morning of the 28th. Your delivery is still a date.

Montgomery gets asked about too, and Maxwell Air Force Base is part of why. It has no row in the table above for a plain reason: we quote the mileage and the delivery date for the exact Montgomery address at the estimate rather than publishing a metro figure we would be rounding, and we do not have a Montgomery curb or permit note we can stand behind the way we can in Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile. Everything else is the same there: the flat rate agreed in writing before we load, the delivery date built on 550 miles a day starting the day after we load, no deposit at any point, and a right-of-way question put to the city before load day rather than on delivery day.

Jones Valley Ground

IN BIRMINGHAM THE ADDRESS IS A TOPOGRAPHY QUESTION

Birmingham sits in Jones Valley, and Red Mountain forms the valley's southern wall. The ridge is a cuesta whose gentler slope faces southeast, so the Birmingham side is the steep face and Southside streets climb it directly. Highland Avenue, the spine of Birmingham's Highland Park, was laid out from the mid-1880s to follow the contours of the Red Mountain foothills rather than a grid, so front doors well above or below the curb are ordinary there and the walk from truck to door is often a set of steps rather than a flat carry.

Five Points South, in Birmingham's Southside, grew out of an 1880s streetcar suburb annexed from the former Town of Highlands, and its houses, churches and 1920s apartment buildings sit on hillside lots, so the constraint on delivery day is finding level curb space close to the door rather than anything about the house itself.

Birmingham's steel-town neighborhoods, Ensley among them, were built out with shotgun, double shotgun and bungalow houses on narrow lots in company-era subdivisions such as Tuxedo Park. Because a shotgun's rooms run front to back in single file, every piece enters through the one front door and passes through each room ahead of it, so the back room is furnished first and anything that will not clear an interior doorway is spotted before it is carried in.

Two Huntsvilles

TWICKENHAM AND THE RESEARCH PARK CORRIDOR ARE TWO DIFFERENT JOBS IN ONE CITY

Huntsville's Twickenham historic district is roughly thirteen blocks of antebellum houses next to downtown, with Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival and Italianate stock alongside later Queen Anne and bungalow infill. Twickenham was the town's original name in 1810, the district was created by city ordinance in 1972 and listed on the National Register in 1973, so expect raised floors, original stairs and period doorways.

The other half of Huntsville is newer, with subdivisions in northwest Huntsville and out toward Madison built around Cummings Research Park and the Redstone Arsenal corridor, where wide streets, driveways and attached garages are the norm. A Twickenham delivery and a research park delivery are two different jobs in the same city. Where the carry calls for a larger crew or a second truck, it is sized at the estimate and included in the flat rate.

Delivery to housing on Redstone Arsenal is a credentialing job arranged before the delivery date rather than at the gate. Anyone without a DoD identification card is vetted through the NCIC Interstate Identification Index for an installation access badge at the Visitor Control Center on Rideout Road at Gate 9, and that office is open 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on federal holidays, so a badge cannot be issued on the morning of a weekend or holiday delivery. Commercial vehicles needing one-time access use the commercial vehicle truck lane at Gate 1, where the guard force inspects them.

Under The Live Oaks

MOBILE'S HISTORIC STREETS DECIDE HOW CLOSE THE TRUCK GETS TO YOUR DOOR

Mobile's De Tonti Square is a compact nine-block district roughly bounded by Adams, St. Anthony, Claiborne and Conception Streets, listed on the National Register in 1972, where streets are narrow, houses sit close to the sidewalk, and on-street space in front of any one address is short. Mobile's Oakleigh Garden district holds Greek Revival, Italianate and Victorian houses near downtown, and the Oakleigh house itself is a frame cottage whose main floor is raised in the manner of Low Country coastal dwellings, so steps at the front rather than a level walk-in are what a crew should plan for.

Mobile's historic-district streets also run under a mature live oak canopy that the city protects, and low limbs over one of those streets are not going to be cut back for a truck, so the working answer is a shorter shuttle from a street with clearance.

Curb Space First

WHAT EACH CITY NEEDS BEFORE A TRUCK HOLDS A LANE

In Birmingham, occupying a street, curb lane or sidewalk with a truck falls under the city's right-of-way permitting, which the Birmingham Department of Transportation administers from the 9th floor of City Hall. BDOT publishes its permit applications online as fillable PDFs that can be emailed in, and the application fee has to be paid before the application is processed. In Huntsville the city permits work and obstruction in the right of way, but the permit it actually publishes is a street cut permit, which the city defines as authority to construct or obstruct the right of way by placing facilities in it. Whether a household moving truck holding a curb lane needs one is not answered on the city's own pages, so we ask the city about the specific address rather than assert that it is covered. In Mobile, right-of-way permitting is run by the City of Mobile Engineering Department, Right of Way Section, at Government Plaza, 205 Government Street, South Tower, 3rd floor, with applications accepted in person, by mail or online, a base fee of $51.00, and additional fees depending on the type and quantity of work in the right of way.

None of the three cities publishes a permit named for household moving. The applicable mechanism in each is the general right-of-way or obstruction permit, so what the city needs is the address, the block and the truck length, and the ask goes in before load day rather than on delivery day.

After The Truck Leaves

THE PAPERWORK THAT STARTS ONCE YOU ARE AN ALABAMA RESIDENT

Alabama registers and titles vehicles at the county level, and the office differs by county: the license plate issuing official is the probate judge in some counties and a license commissioner or commissioner of licenses in others, with the Alabama Department of Revenue overseeing the system. We do not transport vehicles, so the car arrives with you, which is the order Alabama wants: a first Alabama certificate of title requires a physical inspection of the vehicle and verification of the VIN against the title application.

Ad valorem property tax on a motor vehicle is assessed and collected by the county in conjunction with registration, and it is not a one-time arrival cost: under Code of Alabama 40-12-253 it is collected annually in the owner's registration renewal month, all accrued tax has to be collected before a plate is issued, and the first bill on a car driven in from out of state is prorated by the month from the date the vehicle entered Alabama. California folds the equivalent into DMV registration. Running the other way, the Department of Revenue's position is that Alabama law does not provide for emissions testing of motor vehicles, and no periodic safety inspection is required either.

Licensing and registration sit with two different bodies: ALEA's Driver License Division issues licenses and processes out-of-state transfers while the county license plate issuing official handles the tag, and each carries its own 30 day deadline: a new resident has 30 days to transfer an out-of-state license, and under Code of Alabama 40-12-262 the owner of a non-commercial vehicle carrying a valid out-of-state registration has 30 days from the date the vehicle enters Alabama to register it with the county license plate issuing official, with a penalty plus interest for a late registration. Alabama is also a control state: the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board handles wholesale liquor distribution, and wet or dry status is set locally under Title 28 of the Code of Alabama, so a wet municipality can sit inside a dry county.

Alabama's Second Storm Season

TWO SEVERE WEATHER SEASONS AND A NORTH TO SOUTH WINTER SPLIT

Alabama has two severe weather seasons rather than one: alongside the spring peak, the National Weather Service office in Birmingham treats a fall severe weather season that typically runs from the beginning of November into mid-December, worth knowing when picking a fall move date. The NWS Birmingham office also states plainly that Alabama tornadoes can happen in any month of the year and at any time of day or night, which is why having more than one way to receive a warning is the standing local advice.

Severe weather in Alabama is a matter of hours on a given day rather than a season-long shutdown, so it affects how our crew sequences a load or an unload and the delivery date stands. Your delivery is a date, built on 550 miles a day starting the day after we load.

Winter splits Alabama north to south: the Tennessee Valley around Huntsville and northwest Alabama draw winter storm and ice storm warnings for freezing rain, while on the coast around Mobile a few hours of icing around daybreak is the usual worst case. It is not a rule the coast can be planned around, though. On January 21, 2025 the National Weather Service office in Mobile recorded a historic Gulf Coast snowstorm, with Mobile Regional Airport setting a two-day snowfall record of 7.5 inches and breaking a mark that had stood since 1895. Our own practice in Birmingham, not a published rule: when freezing rain is in the forecast we plan the hillside streets of Southside and Highland Park around it and stage from a level street a block away.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a 26 ft box truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

What Happens On Delivery Day

Delivery is not just the truck arriving. There is paperwork, and it matters. An interstate household goods move runs on a bill of lading, which is the contract, and an inventory listing what went on the truck and the condition it was in. On delivery you check items off that inventory as they come in.

The part people miss: if something is damaged or missing, note it on the paperwork before you sign, not afterwards. A signature on a clean delivery receipt is a statement that everything arrived as it left. Take your time over it. A crew that rushes you through signing is a crew to be wary of, and ours are told to wait.

Picking A Month

THERE IS NO DRY SEASON TO AIM FOR IN MOBILE

Rainfall on the Gulf coast is spread across the calendar rather than concentrated in one wet season. There is no dry month to aim for when picking a Mobile delivery date the way a Californian would aim for summer, so pushing the move out two months does not buy you better odds. It buys you two more months of paying for two addresses.

That frees the date to be set by the things that actually have deadlines: the closing, the lease start, the first day of school, the day the job wants you at a desk. Severe weather in Alabama is a matter of hours on a given day rather than a season-long shutdown, so what it changes is how the crew sequences a load or an unload. The delivery date stands.

When The Date Slips

IF THE ALABAMA CLOSING MOVES, THE LOAD GOES INTO STORAGE

Closings move, and they move late. We store household goods, so a load that has nowhere to go on the day it arrives can go into storage instead of becoming a problem you are solving from a hotel room in Birmingham or Huntsville with a truck idling outside a house you do not yet own.

Say it at the estimate if you already suspect the two ends will not line up. Storage that is planned before load day is a different job from storage improvised on delivery morning, and the difference shows up in how smoothly the day runs.

None of that involves money moving up front. We take no deposit, in any form, at any point, and we do not collect payment online. If a company wants a card number to hold an Alabama date, that is the moment to slow down rather than the moment to type.

What We Do Not Do

THREE ALABAMA JOBS WE WILL TURN DOWN

We do not transport vehicles. The car drives to Alabama with you, which is also the order Alabama wants it in, and there is no arrangement where it travels behind your furniture on our equipment.

We do not transport, place or stage containers or portable storage units on this route. If your plan has a container sitting in an Ensley driveway or holding a curb lane in Mobile, that is a different company's work and we will say so rather than take the booking. We also do not do international moves.

What is left is the thing we actually are: a licensed carrier that loads your household goods in San Diego, drives them, and unloads them at your Alabama address. One company, start to finish, and the same name on the estimate and on the truck.

Sizing The Alabama End

THE ALABAMA ADDRESS SETS THE CREW, NOT THE BEDROOM COUNT

A two bedroom into Twickenham can be more work than a three bedroom out toward Madison. Twickenham means raised floors, original stairs and period doorways. So the useful thing to tell us at the estimate is not the bedroom count. It is the street, the steps, whether a 26 ft box truck can stand in front of the door, and, if the address is on Redstone Arsenal, that it is on post so the credentialing can start well before the delivery date.

Wet And Dry Counties

A WET MUNICIPALITY CAN SIT INSIDE A DRY COUNTY

Alabama is a control state. The Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board handles wholesale liquor distribution and operates retail stores, so the state is in the business itself rather than only licensing other people to be in it. That alone is a change from California.

Wet or dry status is then set locally, under Title 28 of the Code of Alabama, by county and by municipal option election. A wet municipality can sit inside a dry county, and availability can change when you cross a county line without anything about the landscape telling you that you have.

The arrival-week version: what was on a shelf at your California grocery store is not a safe assumption about what is on a shelf near your new address, and the answer can be different in the town next door. Check it locally before you plan a housewarming around it.
