Double Drive Time,
Explained Honestly

The most misunderstood line on any California moving bill — what the state’s double-drive-time rule is, why it exists, and exactly what it costs at our real hourly rate.

The Rule

What Double Drive Time Actually Is

California’s double drive time rule answers a fair question: the moving truck has to get from its yard to your house, and home again after — who pays for that? The state’s answer, for hourly household moves: nobody pays for the warehouse legs directly. Instead, the drive between your origin and destination is counted twice and billed at the hourly rate. One number, verifiable on any map app, replaces two unverifiable ones.

It protects you (no padded “travel fees” from a warehouse you can’t see) and treats the mover fairly (the truck’s round trip is roughly covered). Every honest hourly quote in the state includes it — and every confused one-star review that begins “they charged me for time they weren’t even at my house” is about this rule going unexplained. So here’s the explanation.

Worked Example

The Math at Our Actual $109/hr Rate

Say your move is a two-person crew at $109/hour, and the drive from your old apartment in North Park to your new place in Carlsbad is 35 minutes.

LineTimeCharge
Loading in North Park2.0 hours$218.00
Drive time (35 min × 2 = 70 min)1 hr 10 min$127.17
Unloading in Carlsbad1.5 hours$163.50
Total labor + drive4 hr 40 min$508.67

That’s the whole trick: the 35-minute drive appears as 70 billed minutes, and the truck’s trips to and from our Miramar yard appear nowhere. Your estimate from us shows this line explicitly — before you book, not after we load.

Check any hourly quote: ask “how is drive time charged?” If the answer isn’t “double drive time between your addresses” — or the drive minutes on the bill don’t match a map app doubled — make them show their math.

FAQ

Double Drive Time Questions

Is double drive time a scam or extra fee?+
Neither — it’s California’s standard method for charging drive time on hourly moves, set by state rules. The time driving between your old and new home is doubled and billed at the hourly rate, in place of billing the truck’s trip from and back to the warehouse. Any legitimate hourly quote in California includes it.
How much does double drive time add at $109/hr?+
Take the one-way drive between your homes, double it, multiply by the rate. A 20-minute drive becomes 40 billed minutes: about $73 at $109/hr. A 45-minute drive becomes 90 minutes: about $164. It should be spelled out on your estimate, not discovered on the bill.
Does double drive time apply to long-distance moves?+
No — it applies to hourly (typically local) moves. Long-distance California and interstate moves are priced as flat rates, where drive time is built into the quote.
Can a mover charge me drive time from their warehouse instead?+
Under the double-drive-time framework, the doubled origin-to-destination time takes the place of charging the warehouse legs. A company charging you hourly for its commute on top of doubled drive time is double-dipping — ask them to walk you through the math against the state rule.
