Your Same-Day Estimate Under California Rules
A same-day booking does not change what California requires of a licensed mover. The Bureau of Household Goods and Services states that a moving company must provide a Not to Exceed price for every household move. That figure is the most you can be charged unless you ask for additional services, and any such change has to be written up in a Change Order for Moving Services. A Change Order cannot be used because the mover underestimated the job. Read the Not to Exceed figure before the crew starts loading, even when the clock is tight.
The Bureau's consumer tips recommend receiving the estimate at least three days before moving day. On a last minute move that lead time does not exist, so the protection shifts to the paperwork itself: confirm that the document you sign carries the Not to Exceed price and that the hourly rate on it matches what you were quoted on the phone. The same guidance notes that moves under 100 miles may be charged by the hour, which is how every local move we run is billed.
You can also confirm our license while the crew is on the way. Every business that moves household goods within California must hold a BHGS license, and the Bureau's online license search shows whether a Cal-T number is valid, active and in good standing. Ours is CAL-T #201759. Once you have paid the Not to Exceed amount plus any additions you agreed to in writing, a mover cannot refuse to release your goods, so keep a copy of everything you sign.
Short-Notice PCS Orders And A Hired Crew
Orders that arrive with days instead of weeks of notice are one of the situations that send San Diego service members to a same-day crew. Military OneSource describes a personally procured move as one where you pack, transport and unpack your household goods yourself or hire and manage your own moving company. If the government cannot arrange a household goods shipment in the timeframe you request, you may be authorized to do a PPM, and in some cases reimbursed for the actual cost of a commercial mover if your service approves it in advance.
Approval has to come before the move, not after, so call your transportation office before you call us. According to the PCS moving FAQs, you have 45 days from the planned move start date to turn in all paperwork, and the office will want copies of your weight tickets, vehicle registration, moving receipts and a few other documents to reimburse you properly. Full and empty weight tickets are the priority for a PPM, and the transportation office can tell you where to weigh.
If you cannot reach your local office, the PCS Call Center at 833-MIL-MOVE (833-645-6683) is open around the clock. When you book with us for a PPM, tell the dispatcher on the call so the paperwork you sign is complete enough to submit. Our crew size and hourly rate are the same whether or not the move is military, and there is no rush fee for a short-notice reporting date.
Address Changes You Can Finish Tonight
Some of the deadlines attached to a move keep running whether you had two weeks or two hours. The California DMV requires you to report a new address within 10 days of moving. You can do it online at dmv.ca.gov/addresschange at no charge, and you do not automatically get a new license; a replacement card is optional and carries a fee. That is a five minute task you can finish the night the truck leaves.
Mail forwarding is another one. The USPS change of address form can be filed online, with a $1.25 identity verification fee charged to a card whose billing address matches your old or new address. For power and gas, SDG&E lets you schedule a start, stop or move request online by selecting your date, and the request is scheduled automatically with an email confirmation. Submit both while the crew is loading so nothing lapses.
Renters leaving in a hurry should know what Civil Code section 1950.5 still guarantees. No later than 21 calendar days after you vacate, the landlord must send an itemized statement of any deductions and return the rest of your security deposit. If there is any time before the lease ends, you may also request an initial inspection, held no earlier than two weeks before termination, so you can fix problems before deductions are taken. A fast exit does not waive either right.
Curb Space And Leftovers On Move Day
A truck at the curb is the first thing a same-day crew needs, and posted street sweeping restrictions are the most common reason a San Diego block is off limits for a few hours. The City's street sweeping page explains that some routes carry no parking signs stating the day and time of the sweep, and that the Stormwater Department issues citations for vehicles parked during the restricted hours. Check the sign on your block before you give us an arrival window.
Mattresses are the item most often left behind on a short-notice move, and the City accepts them at no charge. The Environmental Services Department's mattress collection site at the Miramar Landfill, 5161 Convoy St., takes mattresses and box springs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with no drop-off limit, as long as they are not wet, soiled, badly damaged or infested with bedbugs. It is closed on weekends, so a Saturday move needs another plan for an old mattress.
