BIG SKY, LONG LAST MILES

Montana is I-15 nearly door to door: north through Nevada, Utah, and Idaho, then fanning out: Bozeman (~1,180 miles), Missoula (~1,250), Billings (~1,290). The interstate mileage is the easy part; Montana’s signature is the last mile, where a delivery can end ten unpaved miles past the county road sign. We ask about the final approach up front (gravel, grades, gates, bridges) because a 26-foot truck handles nearly all of it, and knowing the exception in advance is what keeps delivery day calm.

Winter is serious here: November through March brings genuine sub-zero stretches and I-15/I-90 closures in the mountain passes, so cold-season moves are scheduled with storms in mind and the delivery date is set accordingly. The demand driver is the remote-work mountain-town boom, with Bozeman and Missoula the busiest destinations on our board, plus Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls. Same cold-transit advice as the Dakotas: plants can’t ride in January, and electronics want to warm up before first power-on.

Reading The Number

HOW A MONTANA ADDRESS TELLS A DRIVER WHERE TO TURN

In Montana, rural addresses are assigned by the county rather than by the post office, and counties run addressing through a GIS or 911 addressing office so emergency crews can find a structure. Gallatin County assigns rural numbers on a distance basis, 1,000 numbers per mile measured along the actual road, so the address number itself tells a driver how far along the road the driveway sits. Even numbers there fall on the south and east sides of a road and odd numbers on the north and west, based on the road's predominant direction of travel. A driver who knows that rule can tell from the number alone which side of the road to watch.

Because a Gallatin County number is distance based, a rural address there works as a navigation instruction rather than a label, which is why we ask for the assigned physical address instead of a dropped map pin. WHY THE NUMBER HAS TO BE READABLE FROM THE ROAD

Park County instructs owners to post the address number where the driveway meets the road it is addressed off of, and to post it on the structure as well, with the numbers reflective or lit for night visibility. A shared driveway there is supposed to carry a cluster of address numbers posted together at the road. That rule is worth checking before delivery day: if the number at the road is missing, faded, or knocked down by a plow, the driveway is effectively unmarked from the cab, and the fix is a legible number at the turn.

The other half of the problem: many rural Montana properties have a mailing address that is not the physical address, because mail may go to a box in town while the 911 address describes the actual site, so the address a crew needs is the physical one the county assigned. For a crew arriving with a loaded truck, that gap is not academic. Your flat rate is agreed in writing before we load and your delivery is a date, so nobody wants a driver working a county road looking for a number that was never posted out there. Send the physical address and a plain description of the turn.

Past The Cattle Guard

THE LAST STRETCH IS OFTEN A PRIVATE ROAD, NOT A COUNTY ONE

The last stretch to a Montana property is frequently a private road or an easement rather than a public road. County roads are created by county commission action and are usually maintained by the county, while roads and approaches outside the county right of way are not built or maintained to county standards. A private road's condition, width, grading, and snow clearing fall to the owners under whatever maintenance agreement the easement carries, so the surface at the end can be materially different from the county road that leads to it.

Montana is an open range state, and where a road crosses open range, gates and cattle guards are installed so the land on either side stays usable for livestock, which is why a private drive can have a gate or a cattle guard partway in. Guards are rated by axle load: one built to highway standards carries a substantially higher axle load than an economy guard set in a private driveway, and the crossing can be narrower than the road. Describe it when we quote. If the answer is a larger crew or a second truck, it is sized then and carried inside the same flat rate.

Curb Space Downtown

A DOWNTOWN BOZEMAN DELIVERY IS A PERMIT QUESTION FIRST

Bozeman's Main Street Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and runs along both sides of Main Street between Rouse Avenue and just west of Willson Avenue. Inside those blocks the question is where the truck can legally stand while the crew carries. Bozeman offers a temporary on-street parking permit that lets a crew hold downtown curb space beyond the posted time limit, and the city limits it to one permit per job site, so a downtown Bozeman delivery is a permit question before it is a truck question.

Montana State University's residence hall move-in runs on assigned arrival slots across designated days in late August before fall semester, which concentrates loaded vehicles on the streets around campus and competes for curb space with any household move booked into the same days. If your Bozeman date lands on it, say so early. We cover 550 miles a day starting the day after we load, and Bozeman at 1,180 miles is a day 4 delivery, so the date is settled long before anyone is hunting for room at the curb.

Rivers And Rimrocks

WHAT MISSOULA AND BILLINGS DO TO A DELIVERY PLAN

Missoula's core sits on both banks of the Clark Fork, so an approach that looks short on a map still funnels through a limited number of river crossings. The Hip Strip is the stretch of South Higgins Avenue immediately south of the Clark Fork River, across the Higgins bridge from downtown, a dense run of independent shops and restaurants. The city defines the University District as the neighborhood south of the Clark Fork River, east of South Higgins Avenue, north of Pattee Canyon Drive, and west of Campus Drive. Missoula requires a permit to occupy or close parking spaces in the public right of way, with a temporary traffic control plan submitted to and approved by the city's engineering office, and meter bags and street use permits go through the city's parking commission office.

Billings sits in the Yellowstone River valley below the Rimrocks, sandstone cliffs of the Eagle formation that rise sharply above the valley floor. The rims do real work on access: residents describe neighborhoods by whether they sit above or below them, the Heights and the airport are on top, and moving a loaded truck between the two levels means using one of the limited grades that climb the cliff face rather than a direct line. The useful question on a Billings quote is which side of the rims you are on. Billings routes right of way permitting through the Public Works engineering office.

The Treasurer Errand

WHAT GOES ON THE CALENDAR AFTER THE TRUCK PULLS AWAY

Montana vehicle titling and registration is transacted at the county treasurer's office in the county where the owner lives, while the Motor Vehicle Division sets the statewide rules, forms, and title records, so the answer to where do I register is a county office. New residents are expected to title and register their vehicles in Montana within 60 days of establishing residency; check the current rule with the county treasurer before you rely on the date. A vehicle arriving on an out of state title generally needs a vehicle identification number inspection before Montana will issue a title.

Montana does not require a periodic safety inspection or an emissions test for standard passenger vehicles, so registering a car that arrives from California does not involve a smog certificate, and a light vehicle 11 or more years old may be registered permanently, with no renewal as long as ownership does not change. Montana has no general statewide sales tax, though communities that qualify as resort areas may levy a local resort tax on most retail sales inside their boundaries, so an arriving household can meet a sales tax in one town and none in the next.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

Why The Delivery Is A Date And Not A Window

Ask any long-distance mover for the delivery date and listen to whether you get a date or a window. A two week window usually means the load has not been placed with a driver yet, and the company quoting you does not know who will actually be driving.

Ours is arithmetic. We cover about 550 miles a day, counted from the day AFTER we load, because load day is a working day rather than a driving one. That gives a date, and it is the date on the paperwork. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day we load.

The Survey Is Also Your Chance To Ask

People treat the survey as something being done to them, and it is not. It is the one point before the money where you have the estimator in the room, and there are questions worth using it for. Who actually drives, and are they employed by the company quoting? Is the price a flat rate or an estimate? What happens if the delivery address is not ready?

Ask what happens if something is damaged, and expect an answer in plain language rather than a reference to a schedule you have not seen. A company that is comfortable being asked these things at the survey is generally comfortable being asked them later.
