Inside Tennessee the spine is I-40: Memphis (~1,810 miles) at the river, Nashville (~2,020) in the middle, Chattanooga (~2,150) and Knoxville (~2,200) toward the mountains. The reasons customers give repeat on every call: no state income tax on wages, housing costs, and Nashville’s growth in music, healthcare, and tech.

Delivery character varies by metro: Nashville’s hot neighborhoods (East Nashville, The Nations, Germantown) mix tight streets with rapid construction; Memphis is grid-flat and logistics-minded, with FedEx’s global hub defining the economy; Chattanooga and Knoxville edge into ridge-and-valley terrain where a long driveway up a wooded lot is the classic final-mile note. Seasonally, I-10 through the Southwest heat and the occasional Smoky-adjacent winter dusting are both routine.

Three Grand Divisions

ONE STATE, THREE DIVISIONS AND TWO CLOCKS

Tennessee is formally divided into three Grand Divisions, East, Middle and West, defined in Tennessee Code Annotated section 4-1-201 and represented by the three stars on the state flag, and the state constitution limits how many Supreme Court justices may come from any one division. It is the structural reason Tennessee reads as three places rather than one. Nashville has its own deep treatment on our San Diego to Nashville route page, so the notes here lean on Memphis, Chattanooga and Knoxville.

The state also spans two time zones. Memphis and Nashville are on Central time while Chattanooga and Knoxville are on Eastern. We set the delivery date and the arrival time in the destination city's own zone rather than the one you left, so a confirmed morning arrival in Knoxville means morning in Knoxville.

The Corridor East

THREE INTERSTATES AND A BRIDGE OVER THE MISSISSIPPI

The lane leaves San Diego on I-8 across the Imperial Valley and southwest Arizona. I-8 ends where it meets I-10 southeast of Casa Grande, so the truck picks up I-10 there and runs east through Tucson, southern New Mexico and El Paso. In west Texas I-20 splits away from I-10 and carries through the Dallas and Fort Worth area. From Dallas the practical continuation is I-30 northeast through Texarkana to Little Rock, where I-30 ends at I-40, and I-40 runs east into Memphis. A spine with no scenic detours built into it.

I-40 crosses the Mississippi River into Memphis on the Hernando de Soto Bridge from West Memphis, Arkansas. The I-55 Memphis and Arkansas Bridge downstream is the other crossing in the metro. Two bridges carry the interstate traffic of a river city, which is why work on either one is a live routing consideration rather than a footnote, and why we settle which crossing we use before a Memphis load rolls.

Counting The Nights

WHERE THE TRUCK SLEEPS BETWEEN HERE AND THE RIVER

We cover 550 miles a day, counted from the day after we load, and the overnights fall by geography rather than by clock. The first night lands in the desert Southwest near the Arizona and New Mexico line, the second in west Texas, the third in the Texas and Arkansas border country. The fourth leaves Memphis already in reach at about 1,810 miles. Memphis, Nashville and Chattanooga deliver on day 5, Knoxville on day 6, and those are dates, not targets we revise from the road.

The rate settles the same way: one flat rate agreed in writing before we load. If the household calls for a larger crew or a second truck, that gets sized at the estimate and included in it. No deposit at any point.

Over The Plateau

CHATTANOOGA IS THE EXCEPTION TO THE I-40 RULE

Chattanooga is the one Tennessee metro the I-40 spine does not hand you directly. The sensible topology is I-40 to Nashville and then I-24 southeast. From the southwest there is a second way in, since I-59 runs north out of Birmingham and ends at I-24 near Wildwood, Georgia, just outside the city. Which one applies is settled before the truck leaves the yard on Miramar Place, not at a fork in the road.

Between Nashville and Chattanooga, I-24 crosses the Cumberland Plateau at Monteagle. Both the eastern and the western descents carry sustained grades, and there are two runaway truck ramps on that stretch for drivers who learn the grade the hard way. A loaded box truck takes Monteagle slowly on purpose, and that pace already sits inside the delivery date we gave you.

Memphis Doorways

ADAMS AVENUE, COOPER-YOUNG AND THE HOUSE WITH NO HALLWAY

Memphis is flat and easy to drive, and then you reach the address. Victorian Village is a line of nineteenth century mansions along Adams Avenue on the edge of downtown, anchored by the surviving Woodruff-Fontaine and Mallory-Neely houses. For a delivery that means original narrow drives, iron fencing and mature street trees rather than a modern turnaround, so truck position gets decided at the estimate.

Cooper-Young in Midtown began in 1890 as the Mount Arlington subdivision, laid out as a working class streetcar neighborhood, and the housing stock still reads that way: cottages and bungalows running to Craftsman, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and lingering Queen Anne. Photographs of the porch, the steps and the door earn their keep at the estimate.

The Memphis shotgun house is documented on its own terms through National Register districts including Greenlaw Addition, Speedway Terrace and Delmar-Lema. The form matters more to a mover than to a historian: the rooms open one into the next with no hallway, so every piece travels through every room. A sofa bound for the back room passes through the front and middle rooms to get there, which makes unload order a plan rather than an afterthought.

East Tennessee Approaches

TWO MOUNTAINS, TWO LOFT DISTRICTS AND ONE AUGUST WEEK

Signal Mountain sits on the plateau above Chattanooga and is reached by the switchback ascent locals call the W Road, named for the shape of its turns, so we confirm that approach before the truck commits to it. The Chattanooga approaches to Lookout Mountain are Ochs Highway, Scenic Highway and Nickajack Road, all narrow and winding, so we plan that final stretch by address and by what the truck can actually hold rather than by whatever a phone suggests. St. Elmo sits at the foot of Lookout Mountain, so a St. Elmo address and a Lookout Mountain address are two different deliveries despite sitting close together on a map.

Down in the cities the problem inverts. Chattanooga's Southside and Main Street area is the connected warehouse and loft district, which is where tight loading and shared alleys show up. Knoxville's Old City is the northeast corner of downtown and that city's loft conversion district, so an upper floor delivery there turns on elevator access and dock or curb space rather than driveway width. Knoxville's Fourth and Gill is the older residential case, a National Register district of Victorian era houses, churches and streetscapes that was the separate city of North Knoxville until annexation in 1897, so the platting runs to narrow streets and short setbacks.

One date to know before you choose one. University of Tennessee fall move-in falls in mid August, and Fort Sanders, the dense student neighborhood beside campus, turns over in the same week, so a Knoxville delivery aimed at that stretch shares curb space with everyone else moving then. Workable, and worth naming when we set your date.

Curb Space And Errands

THE PERMIT, THE COUNTY CLERK AND THE TAX THAT WENT AWAY

Curb and right of way permitting is handled by the city, not by a mover's dispatcher, and the instrument goes by a different name in each city. Memphis issues right of way permits and processes street closures separately. Chattanooga requires a Temporary Use of the Right of Way permit before anything is placed in a city right of way. Knoxville requires a Temporary Traffic Control Permit for lane, sidewalk and street closures. For a Nashville address, and anywhere else in the state, we check what the city requires by address rather than assume it. We raise it at the estimate, because it is a lead time item, not a moving day item.

Tennessee also splits two errands new arrivals tend to lump together. Vehicle title and registration go through the county clerk's office in the county where you live, under Department of Revenue policy, while driver licenses come from the Department of Safety and Homeland Security through its Driver Services division. Both carry a hard thirty day deadline from the date you establish residency. Tennessee Code Annotated section 55-4-101 allows a new resident to operate an out of state registered vehicle for a period not to exceed thirty days from the date residency is established, and the Department of Safety requires a Tennessee driver license no later than thirty days after establishing residency.

Two more things a Californian notices. No Tennessee county requires a vehicle emissions test as a condition of registration, so the smog check ritual is not part of the errand. The state administered program in Hamilton, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties ended January 14, 2022 after EPA approved Tennessee's revised state implementation plan, and Davidson County, which is Nashville and ran its own local program, ended testing separately by action of the Metropolitan Council effective February 5, 2022. And the Hall tax, which applied to interest and dividend income and was the state's only tax on personal income, is fully repealed for tax years beginning January 1, 2021, so investment income is not taxed at the state level either. How that nets out against California, including Tennessee's average combined state and local sales tax, which the Tax Foundation puts at 9.61 percent, is a tax professional's question, not ours.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a 26 ft box truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

When The Two Dates Do Not Meet

Interstate moves very often have a gap: the house here closes or the lease ends on one date, and the keys at the other end come available on another. Sometimes it is three days, sometimes it is six weeks. Either way the answer is the same, and it is not a frantic sale of the furniture.

We store household goods, so the load can come off the truck here, wait, and go out again when the far end is ready, without a second company and a second set of hands on your things. Say on the first call which of the two dates is fixed and which is flexible, because that answer shapes the whole plan.

The Survey Is Also Your Chance To Ask

People treat the survey as something being done to them, and it is not. It is the one point before the money where you have the estimator in the room, and there are questions worth using it for. Who actually drives, and are they employed by the company quoting? Is the price a flat rate or an estimate? What happens if the delivery address is not ready?

Ask what happens if something is damaged, and expect an answer in plain language rather than a reference to a schedule you have not seen. A company that is comfortable being asked these things at the survey is generally comfortable being asked them later.
