I-64/I-77/I-79 climb and descend grades that flatland routes never see, and winter ice on those grades is the one seasonal variable we set the written date around. The classic West Virginia final mile is a hollow: a narrow creek-side lane to a house the GPS undersells. We ask about the last half-mile in detail, because that’s where this state’s moves are won.

Bridge Postings

WHAT A POSTED BRIDGE ACTUALLY MEANS ON THE LAST STRETCH OF A WEST VIRGINIA MOVE

West Virginia bridge postings are written by axle configuration rather than as a single number, so one county route bridge can carry separate limits for a two-axle truck, a three-axle truck, a four-or-more-axle truck, and for four- and five-axle semi-trailers. The sign has to be read for the exact rig that is coming, which is why we confirm the last stretch by route number before dispatch. Postings are written per bridge and they change as spans are inspected and repaired.

On secondary roads and county routes a posted limit can land on the only crossing into a valley. When a bridge sits between the highway and the house, we identify the alternate approach or the shuttle plan in advance rather than at the creek, and a shuttle that the last stretch needs is sized at the estimate and carried inside the flat rate agreed in writing.

Some roads are posted against trucks outright. West Virginia Route 72 between US 219 east of Parsons and its south end at WV 32 narrows to a single paved lane with gravel shoulders and carries signs prohibiting trucks, so a house reached that way needs a different approach or a shuttle from the nearest usable road.

WHY A WEST VIRGINIA DELIVERY ADDRESS NEEDS THE COUNTY ATTACHED TO IT

Since 1933 West Virginia has maintained almost every public road in the state, including the former county roads reclassified that year as secondary state highways. The posting, the paving, and the winter treatment on the lane to a rural house all come from one state system rather than from the county.

The numbering is what trips up an out-of-state dispatch. West Virginia county routes use a fractional system in which a trunk route carries a whole number and each lane branching off it is numbered as that route over a serial number, such as CR 19/3, and the numbers reset and repeat at each county line. A delivery address given only as a county route number needs the county attached to be unambiguous. We ask for it at the estimate, because a CR 19/3 in one county and a CR 19/3 in the next are two different lanes with two different bridges on them.

Kanawha Corridor

HOW THE RIVER BOTTOMLAND AROUND CHARLESTON SHAPES THE DELIVERY DAY

Charleston and its neighbors sit on narrow Kanawha River bottomland with steep hillsides directly behind, which pushed development into a continuous linear corridor running from eastern Kanawha County west into Putnam County through South Charleston, Dunbar, Nitro, and St. Albans. Streets run parallel to the river and the cross streets climb quickly, so truck staging usually happens on the river-parallel street.

South Hills and Loudon Heights sit above the river and are reached over a bridge and then up a climbing, winding road to homes on curving streets. That is why we ask for the turn-by-turn from the bridge rather than the address alone. A switchback with a stone wall on the inside is a shuttle decision made in advance, not a surprise on the day.

In Charleston's East End Historic District, which sits along the north bank of the Kanawha with the State Capitol complex on the axis between its two residential halves, parking is parallel along the curb and driveways cut between the parked cars back to rear garages and rear parking areas. The curb lane is often the only place a truck can sit, and the rear approach is worth checking because it is frequently the wider one.

Slope And Grid

MORGANTOWN SORTS BY GRADE AND HUNTINGTON SORTS BY PLAT

Morgantown's housing stock sorts by slope. Sunnyside, Woodburn, and Wiles Hill sit on steep streets directly around WVU's downtown campus, while South Park and Greenmont south of downtown are noticeably flatter. The grade of the street, not the distance to campus, is usually what decides whether the full truck parks at the door.

Morgantown student leases turn over in August and again in May, so an August delivery near the WVU campus lands in the middle of a citywide move-in. Booking the delivery date early and asking the landlord or property manager to hold the curb are the two steps that keep that day simple. Because we commit to a delivery date rather than a range of days, the property manager has something specific to reserve the curb around.

Huntington reads differently. It was platted in 1871 by surveyor Rufus Cook on a numbered gridiron, with numbered streets running from the river south at about eighty feet wide, avenues running east and west with the main ones laid out at about 100 feet, and alleys cut between the avenues. A Huntington address usually offers both curb room for a 26 ft truck and a rear alley to work from.

Curb Permits

THE PAPERWORK THAT RESERVES THE SPACE IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE

In Charleston the city's Traffic, Parking and Transportation department issues permits for street obstructions and street closings, and the city publishes a temporary street and sidewalk closure permit for that purpose. If the curb in front of the house is the only place the truck can sit, that is the office to ask before the delivery date. The same department runs the meters and the residential parking permit program, and metered spaces can be bagged as no parking, which is how a reserved space for a truck is actually created downtown and in the East End.

Morgantown uses a different instrument. The city requires a right-of-way permit to close or obstruct a city sidewalk or roadway, and the city's own guidance says the application must be submitted more than 48 hours before the proposed closure, with a stop work order or fines possible otherwise; the applicant also has to notify the utility companies and the non-emergency dispatch center when a street is closed. Morgantown's residential parking blocks near campus are separately marked with blue curb and administered by the Morgantown Parking Authority, which issues resident and visitor passes to qualifying property owners, so on a blue-curb block a pass for the truck is its own step.

Destination Errands

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles sits under the state Department of Transportation and handles titling, registration, and driver licensing. New residents are generally expected to title and register a vehicle and transfer an out-of-state license within a set number of days after establishing residency. Check the current rule with the DMV.

West Virginia requires a periodic motor vehicle safety inspection at a station licensed by the West Virginia State Police, and a passing vehicle gets a sticker placed on the inside of the windshield. San Diego drivers do not expect that step, because California has no equivalent passenger-car safety sticker. The inspection cycle and the deadline that runs from the date the vehicle is titled in West Virginia have both been changed by the legislature, so check the current rule first.

The third is a tax filing. West Virginia levies a personal property tax on vehicles that is assessed by the county rather than the state: the return is filed with the county assessor in a filing period that opens July 1 and closes October 1 and reports what was owned as of July 1, so whether a move lands before or after that period changes which tax year is affected. The return is tied to vehicle registration, because failing to file makes renewing a registration harder later. California has no county filing of this kind, so check the current rule with the destination county assessor.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

What We Do Not Do

Worth saying plainly, because the alternative is finding out late. We do not do international moves. We do not ship containers or portable storage pods. We do not transport cars, boats or motorcycles, and we cannot take one on the truck alongside the household goods. The one exception is a golf cart, which we do move; see our golf cart moving service.

What we do is household goods, in our own trucks, with our own crews, as the carrier rather than a broker reselling the job. If your move needs something on that first list, we would rather tell you now than take the booking and hand you a problem at the curb.

Packing: Yours, Ours, Or Both

On an interstate move the packing matters more than it does on a local one, because the load is on the road for days rather than hours. A box packed loosely survives a trip across town and does not survive a thousand miles. We pack full or partial, and plenty of families do the books and the clothes themselves and leave the kitchen and the fragile things to us.

One thing to know either way: cartons you packed yourself are recorded differently on the inventory from cartons the crew packed, because nobody from the crew saw what went in. That is not a trap, it is just how the paperwork works, and it is worth understanding before you sign it rather than after.
