Call or Text 211 →County & Government Services
The county’s primary agency for seniors. Offers case management, in-home support (IHSS), caregiver services, legal assistance, transportation, and connections to every community program available to San Diego seniors. Free assessments available.
Pays for in-home care for eligible seniors and people with disabilities. If you currently receive IHSS, you must notify the county when you move to ensure your services transfer to the new address without interruption.
Investigates and responds to reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of adults aged 18 and older. If you have concerns about a senior’s safety during or after a move, APS is the right agency to contact.
The City of San Diego operates senior centers throughout the city offering classes, activities, meals, social programs, and connections to community services. A great first stop after moving to a new neighborhood.
Health & Nutrition
Delivers nutritious meals to homebound seniors throughout San Diego County. If you currently receive Meals on Wheels, contact them well before your move to update your delivery address. New recipients can apply for service at any time.
Free, unbiased Medicare counseling from trained volunteers. Essential for seniors who are moving, especially if your Medicare Advantage plan may not cover your new zip code. No sales pitch, no agenda — just free expert help.
Comprehensive healthcare for eligible veterans in San Diego. If you are a veteran moving to San Diego or within San Diego County, contact the VA to transfer your care and update your address in the VA system.
Qualifying low-income seniors receive a significant discount on their monthly SDG&E electric and gas bills through the CARE program. Apply when you transfer your SDG&E service to your new address.
Transportation
Door-to-door transportation service for seniors and people with disabilities who cannot use fixed-route MTS buses. Requires advance registration and booking. Register as soon as possible after moving — there may be a waiting period.
San Diego County Aging and Independence Services coordinates transportation assistance for seniors who need rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential destinations. Eligibility varies by program.
Legal & Financial Help
Free legal services for low-income seniors including power of attorney, guardianship, housing disputes, benefits advocacy, and elder abuse cases. One of the most important resources available to San Diego seniors navigating a major life transition.
AARP offers free tax preparation (AARP Tax-Aide), legal services, fraud prevention, benefits checkup, and a local San Diego chapter with events and community connections. Members and non-members both welcome for many programs.
Free help for veterans navigating VA benefits, pensions, healthcare enrollment, and survivor benefits. San Diego has one of the largest veteran populations in the country and excellent county-level support services.
Free homebound delivery of library materials, digital literacy programs, and in-branch senior programming at locations throughout San Diego. A library card is free and open to all San Diego residents.
Memory Care & Caregiver Support
San Diego’s dedicated Alzheimer’s organization offering family education, support groups, care consultations, crisis intervention, and connections to memory care resources. If your parent has Alzheimer’s or dementia, this is your most important local resource.
Comprehensive resources for family caregivers including fact sheets, webinars, a helpline staffed by care specialists, and a state-by-state resource finder. Covers all aspects of caregiving including the stress and logistics of a senior move.
San Diego County offers respite care, caregiver training, support groups, and supplemental services specifically for family members caring for an aging parent or relative. Free for qualifying families.
The National Association of Senior Move Managers certifies professionals who specialize entirely in coordinating senior moves. They handle downsizing, packing, coordinating movers, and setting up the new home. Ideal for families who live far away or need extra help.
