TWO ARKANSAWS: LITTLE ROCK & THE NORTHWEST BOOM

Little Rock (~1,690 miles) is the I-40 capital-city delivery; the Fayetteville–Bentonville–Rogers corridor (~1,530) in the state’s northwest corner is the boom. Walmart’s Bentonville headquarters (and the supplier ecosystem that follows it, plus the University of Arkansas) has turned Northwest Arkansas into one of the fastest-growing metros in the country, ranked ninth by the Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 estimates, and it now outdraws Little Rock on our board.

Northwest Arkansas is delivered day 4. The Ozarks supply the only terrain note: northwest-corner deliveries can end on wooded hillside drives where we confirm the approach in advance. Seasonally, spring storms (March to May) occasionally shift an afternoon unload to morning, the same mild caveat as the rest of the mid-South.

The Arrival End

TWO ARRIVAL ENDS, FAR APART

The Arkansas end of this move is really two destinations that sit far apart. Little Rock lies near the geographic center of the state on the south bank of the Arkansas River, with North Little Rock directly across the water. Northwest Arkansas, meaning Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Bentonville, occupies the opposite corner of the state with its own airport, its own economy, and its own character. A delivery to one tells you nothing about the other.

That is why the first thing we settle on this route is not the city but the address. The two ends put different roads, different terrain, and different curbs under the truck, and everything that follows, from the fork the driver takes to the ground waiting at the destination, depends on which corner of Arkansas you are landing in.

The Road

ONE INTERSTATE IN, A FORK AT ALMA

I-40 is the spine of this move, the same cross-country lane our San Diego to Nashville and San Diego to Raleigh loads ride, but Arkansas comes off it early. The interstate enters the state at Van Buren, near the Oklahoma line, and the interchange with I-49 comes up near Alma shortly after, so a Northwest Arkansas load leaves I-40 almost as soon as it reaches Arkansas.

The Fayetteville truck turns north at Alma onto I-49 and climbs through the Boston Mountains, the high southern front of the Ozarks. On the way up it passes through the Bobby Hopper Tunnel near Winslow, the only highway tunnel in Arkansas, then drops into Fayetteville and continues up the corridor through Springdale and Rogers toward Bentonville.

A Little Rock load never leaves I-40. Past the I-49 split the interstate follows the Arkansas River Valley, with the Ozarks rising to the north and the Ouachitas to the south, and runs through Clarksville, Russellville, and Conway to the capital.

Timing

HOW THE DELIVERY DAY ACTUALLY HAPPENS

Delivery on this route follows one rhythm: 550 miles a day, starting the day after we load. On the roughly 1,690-mile run to Little Rock that makes four driving days, with the first night falling around northern Arizona and the last of them crossing Oklahoma into Arkansas for delivery on day 5.

Fayetteville, at about 1,530 miles, rides the same rhythm and comes in a day earlier, on day 4. The turn at Alma and the climb through the Boston Mountains happen inside that last Fayetteville driving day. The flat rate for the whole run is agreed in writing before we load, there is no deposit at any point, and it is our truck and our crew door to door.

The Ice Question

WINTER HERE IS AN ICE STORY

Arkansas winters are an ice story more than a snow story. The state sits in a freezing-rain-prone belt of the mid-South, and the National Weather Service office in Little Rock maintains a long-running Arkansas Winter Storm Database, a record worth knowing about when you schedule a December through February delivery.

For the move itself, ice at the Arkansas end is a timing question, not a rate question. Your furniture rides blanketed and wrapped in the truck either way, and if freezing rain shows up in the forecast for your delivery day, we adjust the unload hour rather than the agreement. The flat rate was put in writing before we loaded and does not move with the weather.

Landing In Arkansas

WHAT THE TRUCK FINDS AT EACH END

Little Rock's durable anchors face the Arkansas River: the State Capitol, the River Market District downtown along the bank, and UAMS, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, the state's only academic health sciences center. Downtown is a conventional capital-city grid with numbered streets counting back from the river, straightforward ground for a moving truck.

Northwest Arkansas is anchored by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and three long-standing corporate headquarters: Walmart in Bentonville, Tyson Foods in Springdale, and J.B. Hunt in Lowell. The towns grew up along old US 71, and that road, now US 71B, is still the corridor's shared main street, running as College Avenue through Fayetteville and continuing north through Springdale, Lowell, and Rogers. I-49 is the bypass freeway, so the truck comes off the interstate into old main-street grids and then climbs into the hillside subdivisions behind them.

The ground itself differs too. The Northwest corner sits in the Ozarks, hills and hollows rather than flat ground, so streets curve with the terrain and a delivery can end on a slope, a switchback subdivision road, or a wooded drive. Little Rock's river-valley ground is gentler.

Your Paperwork

ONE AGENCY FOR THE LICENSE AND THE CAR

Arkansas puts both halves of new-resident paperwork under one roof. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, the DFA, runs driver services, which covers your license and ID, and vehicle registration, which covers title and plates, so a new arrival deals with one agency for the car and the license alike.

Two related notes. We are a household goods carrier and do not transport vehicles, so the car makes its own trip to Arkansas, and the title and plates errand waits at the same DFA counter as the license. How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

What We Do Not Do

Worth saying plainly, because the alternative is finding out late. We do not do international moves. We do not ship containers or portable storage pods. We do not transport cars, boats or motorcycles, and we cannot take one on the truck alongside the household goods. The one exception is a golf cart, which we do move; see our golf cart moving service.

What we do is household goods, in our own trucks, with our own crews, as the carrier rather than a broker reselling the job. If your move needs something on that first list, we would rather tell you now than take the booking and hand you a problem at the curb.

Arrival Deadlines

TWO DIFFERENT CLOCKS START THE DAY YOU ARRIVE

Arkansas gives a new resident 60 days to register a vehicle, and that is longer than most states. The driver's license is a separate deadline and a shorter one, so the safe working assumption is 30 days for the whole errand rather than trusting the longer number. The two sit in different statutes and only the registration deadline was extended, which is why so much of what is written about this online, including on the state's own consumer portal, still gives the shorter figure for both.

There is a third deadline nobody warns Californians about. Arkansas charges an annual personal property tax on vehicles, and you have to report your cars, boats and trailers to the county assessor between January 1 and May 31. Miss it and a 10 percent penalty attaches automatically. If May 31 lands on a weekend or a postal holiday, the last penalty-free day is the next business day. This is a different office from the revenue office where you get the tag, and the county assessor can tell you how assessment and tag renewal line up.

Buying A Home

DO NOT BUDGET FROM THE SELLER'S TAX BILL

This is the single most expensive assumption a buyer can bring to Arkansas. The state caps how fast a homestead's taxable value can rise, but that cap does not survive a sale. Under A.C.A. 26-26-1123 the assessor assesses the property at 20 percent of appraised value at the next assessment date after the title transfers, and the new owner cannot claim any limitation on assessed value until the second assessment date after the transfer.

In practice that means the seller's current bill tells you almost nothing about yours. If the previous owner held the house for years while the cap suppressed their taxable value, that suppression ends with the sale and you go uncapped for two assessment cycles. Work out the likely bill from the purchase price and the local millage instead. The senior and disabled assessment freeze behaves the same way and does not convey to a new owner.

The Homestead Property Tax Credit does not travel with the house either. The seller's credit does not carry over, and the buyer has to file their own application with the county assessor. The credit is $600 on 2026 tax bills, and Act 174 of 2026, signed on 1 May 2026 after passing the House 94 to nothing and the Senate 34 to nothing, raises it to $675 for assessment years beginning on or after 1 January 2026, which shows up on bills payable in 2027.

Buying A Home

THE HOMESTEAD FILING DEADLINE IS LATER THAN IT SOUNDS

The credit is not allowed after October 15 of the year FOLLOWING the assessment year, so a 2026 assessment has to be registered with the county assessor by October 15 of 2027. If October 15 falls on a Saturday, a Sunday or a holiday the Postal Service observes, the filing is good through the next business day.

That extra year sounds generous and it is the reason people miss it. The reliable habit is to walk into the county assessor's office within two weeks of closing and file then, while the paperwork is still on the kitchen table.

If You Rent First

IF YOU ARE RENTING FIRST, READ THE LEASE DIFFERENTLY

Arkansas landlord-tenant law is genuinely different from California's, and the gap is wider than most people expect. The security deposit statutes do not apply at all to a landlord who owns five or fewer dwelling units, counted across that person, their spouse and minor children, and any company they own or control. There is one important exception: the exemption does not apply where a third party manages the property, including collecting rent, for a fee. So a small landlord who uses a management company is covered even with a single duplex.

Where the statutes do apply, the landlord may not demand more than two months' rent as a deposit and must return it, with a written itemized list of anything withheld, within 60 days after the tenancy ends and possession is handed back. Sixty days, not California's twenty-one. Budget for that float if you are moving deposit money from one state to another.

Arkansas also has no general implied warranty of habitability. Act 1052 of 2021, codified at A.C.A. 18-17-502, sets minimum standards for leases entered into or renewed after 1 November 2021: potable hot and cold running water, available electricity, sanitary sewer and plumbing that meets code, a functioning roof and building envelope, and any heating and air conditioning that existed when the unit was rented. The remedy is narrow. Written notice, 30 calendar days for the landlord to cure, and if they do not and your rent is current, your only remedy is to terminate the lease without penalty and get your deposit back. There is no repair-and-deduct and no rent withholding. These standards can also be waived by written agreement, which means the lease itself may sign them away, so read that clause before you sign it.

Choosing The Month

CHOOSING THE MONTH

Arkansas severe weather is bimodal and the second season is the one that surprises people. April is the single most active tornado month inside a primary season that runs March through May, and there is a genuine secondary maximum in November and December. A move in either window should carry a contingency day.

Winter here is an ice story rather than a snow story. Winter storms run roughly November through March, ice storms are a greater threat than blizzards, and up to half of the state's freezing rain events last more than six hours, which is long enough to load limbs and bring down power lines. Many stations average one such long-duration event a year and up to about 30 hours of freezing rain annually, on the Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program's 1979 to 2016 record. A glazed interstate does not clear by noon the way snow does.

July and August are the hottest months in central Arkansas, with average highs in the low 90s in Little Rock on the 1991 to 2020 normals. The Ozarks in the northwest run cooler, so a Fayetteville summer is not a Little Rock summer, and a reader comparing the two should not use one number for both.

Packing

WHAT NOT TO PUT ON THE TRUCK

Leave the firewood in California. Arkansas has had a statewide quarantine on hardwood firewood and ash material since March 2018 for emerald ash borer, and while that rule governs the movement of Arkansas material rather than what you bring in, the standing advice from the state and from the University of Arkansas Extension is the same in both directions: do not haul firewood across state lines, buy it where you burn it. It is low value and it is exactly the vector the rules exist to close.

If a vehicle on the move carries a title branded Salvage, Prior Salvage or anything similar, Arkansas requires a VIN verification before the Office of Motor Vehicle will title it. That can be done by the Arkansas State Police, an ASP designee, or a certified law enforcement officer of any Arkansas city or county. Separately, if a branded-title vehicle has been rebuilt, the owner has ten working days from the rebuild, not from arriving in Arkansas, to apply for the rebuilt title with an Affidavit of Reconstruction.

One thing we will not tell you, because we could not establish it: whether you owe Arkansas sales or use tax on a car you already owned and registered in California. The confident answers online come from sites with no statutory citation, and the amount at stake is a percentage of the vehicle's value. Take your California registration and proof of California sales tax paid to the revenue office and let them compute it. That is the honest instruction.
