The Honest Version

What “Insurance” Means on a Moving Truck

Movers don’t technically sell “insurance” — they offer valuation: the level of liability the company accepts for your goods. Every legitimate move includes a basic level at no charge, and the gap between that basic level and your stuff’s actual value is the single most misunderstood money question in moving. Here it is with real numbers.

The Arithmetic

Released Value: 60 Cents Per Pound, Illustrated

The included coverage — released value — pays by weight, not worth: commonly 60 cents per pound per article.

ItemApprox. weightReplacement costReleased-value payout
65″ OLED television50 lb$1,800$30
Queen mattress90 lb$1,200$54
Laptop4 lb$1,500$2.40
Solid-wood dresser150 lb$900$90
Upright piano500 lb$5,000$300

None of that is a trick — it’s the standard baseline across the industry, and it’s why the law makes movers disclose it. The mistake isn’t taking released value; it’s taking it without doing this table for your own belongings first.

Your Real Options

Choosing Coverage That Matches Your Stuff

Full value protection

The mover repairs, replaces with like kind, or pays current replacement value, up to your declared amount (with any deductible you choose). Costs more; means something. For households with normal-to-high value contents, this is usually the rational choice.

Third-party transit insurance

Independent policies covering your goods in transit — worth pricing for high-value households, and sometimes already partially provided by homeowner’s or renter’s policies. Ask your agent the specific question: “are my goods covered in a professional move?”

High-value and fragile items

Art, instruments, and heirlooms deserve packing that prevents claims instead of funding them — that’s our custom crating service. And pianos ride with our piano crew, boards and straps included.

FAQ

Valuation & Claims Questions

What does the free coverage actually pay for a broken 65-inch TV?+
Released-value coverage pays by weight: at 60 cents per pound, a 50-pound TV pays about $30 — regardless of what the TV cost. That’s the arithmetic everyone should see before declining better coverage.
What is full value protection?+
Coverage under which the mover must repair, replace with like kind, or pay the current replacement value of a damaged item, subject to the declared value and any deductible. It costs more than the free released-value option because it actually tracks what things are worth.
Should I buy third-party moving insurance?+
Consider it when your goods’ value is high relative to declared-value limits, for fine art and instruments (see our custom crating service), or when you want coverage independent of the carrier. Check whether your homeowner’s or renter’s policy already covers goods in transit — some do.
How do I file a claim, and how long do I have?+
In writing, with photos, your inventory numbers, and the bill of lading — within nine months of delivery, though sooner is always stronger. We acknowledge claims quickly and resolve them within the state’s required timelines; the process starts with one email to our office.
