WHERE OUR IDAHO MOVES LAND

Boise (~1,080 miles, I-15 then I-84 through Nevada’s corner and the Snake River Plain) draws more of our Idaho moves than anywhere else in the state, and the Treasure Valley (Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell) is where most of them land. Idaho Falls (~860) serves the eastern side and the INL workforce; Coeur d’Alene (~1,270) is a genuinely different trip into the state’s panhandle, closer to Spokane than to Boise.

Winter on this route means occasional freezing fog and ice through the Snake River Plain; deliveries continue through winter. The practical Idaho note is growth itself. Much of the Treasure Valley is new construction with easy truck access, but the pace of building means GPS data lags; we confirm new-subdivision addresses against the plat before delivery day so the truck doesn’t arrive before the road name does.

Two Clocks

IDAHO RUNS ON TWO TIME ZONES AND YOUR DELIVERY CITY DECIDES WHICH ONE

Idaho is split between two time zones and the line is federally defined. Under 49 CFR 71.9 the Mountain-Pacific boundary runs from the Canadian border south along the Idaho-Montana line to the boundary between Idaho County and Lemhi County, southwesterly along that county line to the main channel of the Salmon River, then west along the Salmon River to the Idaho-Oregon line. Coeur d'Alene and the panhandle counties (Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Clearwater, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce, Shoshone, and the part of Idaho County north of the Salmon River) are on Pacific time, the same clock San Diego runs on. Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Idaho Falls, Ketchum, and Sun Valley are on Mountain time, one hour ahead.

A Coeur d'Alene delivery and our San Diego office share a clock all day, while a Boise or Idaho Falls delivery runs an hour ahead of the origin, so a call placed at the start of the San Diego business day lands mid-morning at the destination. The split is durable rather than seasonal: both halves of the state observe daylight saving together, so the offset holds year-round and only the shared shift date moves.

Titles, Plates And Tax

IDAHO SPLITS DMV WORK BETWEEN THE STATE AND YOUR COUNTY

The Idaho Transportation Department is the state authority for driver licensing and vehicle titling and registration, but county assessors handle titles, registrations, and plates while county sheriffs' offices handle driver's licensing, so you deal with two county offices rather than one DMV. The county triangle is the structure to learn: assessor for vehicles and property assessment, recorder for plats and recorded covenants, sheriff for driver's licenses, nearly all of it at the county seat, Coeur d'Alene for Kootenai County and Idaho Falls for Bonneville County.

Idaho also sets a deadline for new residents to convert a driver's license and register vehicles after establishing residency, and the legislature has changed how long new arrivals get, so confirm the current rule with the state transportation department or your county office rather than a number you find online.

Idaho Falls Specifics

WHAT AN IDAHO FALLS ADDRESS ASKS OF A DELIVERY CREW

Idaho Falls Power is a city-owned municipal electric utility that has operated since 1900 and runs city hydro plants on the Snake River, so arriving households set up electric service through the city rather than through a statewide investor-owned utility, and the city also operates a municipal fiber network. Curb and right-of-way control sits with the city: its code covers use of public sidewalks (Title 8, Chapter 8) and public right-of-way construction (Title 8, Chapter 7), the latter requiring a city permit before construction, repair, or excavation in any street, alley, easement, or other public right-of-way, so anything beyond ordinary on-street parking is arranged with the city.

Idaho Falls was called Eagle Rock until 1891, and the falls that now span the Snake River through downtown are the product of a dam and powerhouse built around 1910 rather than a natural cataract. The Snake River Greenbelt is a linear park running along both banks through downtown, so riverfront addresses in that stretch front the street on one side and park on the other, which makes access there a street-side question.

Idaho National Laboratory was established in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station, and it has an in-town campus in Idaho Falls plus a separate, isolated desert site to the west, with the lab running its own employee bus fleet between Snake River valley towns and that site.

Panhandle Addresses

COEUR D'ALENE STREETS WERE SHAPED BY A LAKE AND AN 1884 PLAT

Coeur d'Alene is the seat of Kootenai County and sits on the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene at the point where the Spokane River leaves the lake. The lake is glacial in origin and dam-controlled, long and narrow with a deeply indented shoreline, which is why lakeside addresses there are reached by lanes that follow the water rather than a grid.

The steep streets on the east side of downtown come from an 1884 platting decision: Tony Tubbs filed the Tubbs Addition as a rectangular plat of seven blocks with straight streets laid across the hillside grade rather than contoured around it, and the grid still reflects it. Fort Grounds, north of downtown, sits on the grounds of Fort Sherman, the Army post established on the north shore in 1878, and is now home to North Idaho College; it is tree-lined, so mature street trees and overhead clearance are the constraint there rather than grade. Sanders Beach, just east of downtown, is wedged between Tubbs Hill on the west and Sherman Avenue on the north on a public strip of lakeshore, a confined pocket of lakefront addresses rather than an open neighborhood.

Coeur d'Alene also requires an encroachment permit from the city for work or heavy equipment on or in the city right-of-way, including full or partial street closures, with a certificate of liability insurance naming the City of Coeur d'Alene as an additional insured.

What The Recorder Holds

IN MERIDIAN AND NAMPA THE RECORDED DECLARATION DECIDES YOUR MOVE-IN RULES

Meridian is in Ada County and Nampa is in Canyon County, the two counties that make up the Treasure Valley, and their older cores do not resemble each other for a reason. Nampa grew up as a railroad town in the 1880s around the Oregon Short Line and Idaho Central Railway, while Meridian had no such catalyst and incorporated more than a decade later. Meridian takes its name from the Boise Meridian, the principal meridian adopted in 1867 that, with its baseline at the Initial Point, governs every public land survey in Idaho, and the city sits on that survey line.

Idaho's Homeowner's Association Act (Idaho Code Title 55, Chapter 32) defines the declaration as an instrument filed in the real property records of a county. An incoming Meridian or Nampa owner can therefore pull the recorded declaration from the county recorder before delivery day and read the actual rules on truck parking, trailers, dumpsters, and move-in hours.

The same Act limits what a board can add later: a homeowner's association board may not use its power to adopt rules governing common property to expand the recorded restrictive covenants as they apply to a member's own lot, so the recorded declaration rather than a later board memo is the document that governs a move-in.

Not One Climate

IDAHO IS NOT ONE CLIMATE AND THE DESTINATION DECIDES THE UNPACKING PLAN

Idaho Falls sits at roughly 4,700 feet on the eastern Snake River Plain and is classified as semi-arid, with modest annual precipitation and a snowy winter heating season. Coeur d'Alene sits far lower, in the low two thousands of feet in the northern panhandle, where Pacific moisture is carried inland and released over the northern Rockies. That is why valley bottoms in north Idaho carry western red cedar and western hemlock, and why a household moving to Coeur d'Alene is moving somewhere wetter than San Diego, not drier.

The generic line about Idaho being dry is wrong for a large share of the state, so acclimation advice has to follow the destination. An Idaho Falls or Wood River Valley delivery lands high on a semi-arid plain with a long heating season; a Coeur d'Alene delivery lands low in a maritime-influenced zone.

Sun Valley and Ketchum are adjacent Blaine County resort towns in the Wood River Valley, strung along a narrow valley floor with mountains closing in on both sides, so a delivery there turns on driveway grade, plowed snow piled on the shoulder, and where the snow can be pushed, rather than on street width.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

What Happens On Delivery Day

Delivery is not just the truck arriving. There is paperwork, and it matters. An interstate household goods move runs on a bill of lading, which is the contract, and an inventory listing what went on the truck and the condition it was in. On delivery you check items off that inventory as they come in.

The part people miss: if something is damaged or missing, note it on the paperwork before you sign, not afterwards. A signature on a clean delivery receipt is a statement that everything arrived as it left. Take your time over it. A crew that rushes you through signing is a crew to be wary of, and ours are told to wait.

When The Two Dates Do Not Meet

Interstate moves very often have a gap: the house here closes or the lease ends on one date, and the keys at the other end come available on another. Sometimes it is three days, sometimes it is six weeks. Either way the answer is the same, and it is not a frantic sale of the furniture.

We store household goods, so the load can come off the truck here, wait, and go out again when the far end is ready, without a second company and a second set of hands on your things. Say on the first call which of the two dates is fixed and which is flexible, because that answer shapes the whole plan.
