South Carolina splits three ways: Greenville (~2,290 miles) in the manufacturing Upstate (BMW’s Spartanburg plant is the anchor) Columbia (~2,355) in the middle, and Charleston (~2,440) on the coast, where Boeing’s Dreamliner campus meets the country’s first locally protected historic district, created by city ordinance in 1931. Transit runs to day 6 for the Upstate and the coast alike.

Charleston’s peninsula plays by Savannah rules: narrow historic lanes, low overhangs, and streets where the final blocks take smaller equipment, planned and priced in advance. Coastal humidity earns the standard wood-acclimation advice, and hurricane season (June to November) shapes when Lowcountry dates get set. Military traffic centers on Joint Base Charleston and Shaw AFB, with Parris Island adding Marine families to the coastal mix.

The Single House Question

IN CHARLESTON, FURNITURE ARRIVES SIDEWAYS

The Charleston single house is the floor plan that defines the peninsula, and it changes how a move-in works. The house turns its narrow gable end to the street and runs its long side down the lot, with a full-length side porch, the piazza, along that flank. The door you see from the sidewalk usually opens onto the piazza, not into the house; the real front door sits halfway along the porch. So a sofa coming off the truck does not go straight in from the curb. It travels through the porch door, down the piazza, and into a plan that is one room wide from front to back. That geometry decides which pieces come apart, in what order they load in San Diego, and how the crew stages the carry.

There is also a legal layer. Charleston adopted the first locally protected historic district in the United States in 1931, and the same ordinance created the Board of Architectural Review, which still passes on exterior changes in the Old and Historic District. Anything bolted to the outside of a historic house, down to mounting hardware, can fall under its purview, which is worth knowing before anyone proposes attaching equipment to a facade. The practical answer is planning: the carry goes through the piazza and the stairs, sized during the estimate and covered by the flat rate.

Two Cities, Two Permit Desks

WHO SIGNS OFF ON THE CURB SPACE

In Charleston, permits to place anything in the public right-of-way come from the city's Public Service Department, and temporarily blocking a street requires a separate city street blocking permit with an approved traffic control plan. On the narrow blocks south of Broad, where a truck can fill the lane, that second permit is not a technicality. Confirm the city's current requirements before move day; we raise the question during the quote so the answer exists before the truck does.

Columbia runs its own version. Temporary encroachments on the right-of-way, including lane and sidewalk closures, require a city encroachment permit, and because many Columbia streets are state-maintained, SCDOT approval is required on those in addition to the city's. Check the city's current process before move day. Since the flat rate is agreed in writing before we load, this sorting happens up front, not at the curb with the furniture waiting.

The Midlands Rhythm

COLUMBIA MOVES ON TWO CALENDARS

Columbia was founded to be the state capital in 1786, and the legislature first met there in 1790, and the University of South Carolina, chartered in 1801, spreads from its historic Horseshoe quadrangle through downtown. Student and faculty move-ins are a fixture of the city's housing rhythm, which means late summer puts real pressure on trucks, elevators, and curb space near campus.

The other calendar is military. Fort Jackson, established in 1917 on Columbia's east side, is the Army's largest Initial Entry Training post, training about half of all new soldiers, and it keeps a steady flow of military households moving into the Midlands alongside the university crowd. If your dates are flexible, it is worth weighing both cycles when you pick a load day; if they are not, we plan around them.

The Roads That Carry It

ONE LANE OF INTERSTATES, DESERT TO FLORENCE

The lane leaves San Diego on I-8 over the mountains and desert, joins I-10 southeast of Casa Grande, Arizona, runs on through Tucson, and crosses New Mexico into west Texas, where I-20 splits off toward Dallas. From there it rides I-20 through the Atlanta orbit and across South Carolina, where the interstate ends at I-95 in Florence. One quirk matters more than the rest: I-20 runs straight through downtown Atlanta rather than around it, so Atlanta is the one traffic pivot on the route, and crews plan that passage outside peak periods. The truck covers 550 miles a day starting the day after we load, which is how delivery lands on day 6.

The first legs cross the Imperial Valley and the Sonoran Desert, so summer loads favor early starts and heat-aware handling for candles, vinyl records, electronics, and instruments before the climate turns humid east of Texas. Inside South Carolina, I-26 is the spine, crossing from the mountains through Columbia to Charleston, while I-85 clips the Upstate through Greenville and Spartanburg. The Upstate, the Midlands, and the coast all hang off interstates fed by the I-20 approach, so your destination changes the tail of the trip, not the shape of it.

GREENVILLE BUILT ITS DOWNTOWN AROUND A WATERFALL

Greenville's revitalized Main Street corridor centers on Falls Park on the Reedy, reclaimed from old textile mill land, and the pedestrian Liberty Bridge, completed in 2004, at the heart of its walkable downtown. For a move, that translates to a compact core where apartments and townhomes sit close to the park, and a delivery there is a downtown delivery, planned like one. Addresses farther out along the I-85 side of the Upstate are a simpler unload. Either way, Greenville sits at 2,290 miles from San Diego and takes delivery on day 6, same as the rest of the state.

Ground Level in the Lowcountry

STAIRS FIRST, STORM SENSE SECOND

Raised foundations and open crawl spaces are the traditional Lowcountry answer to high water tables and storm surge, letting floodwater and air pass beneath the house. For a moving crew, that means coastal deliveries routinely involve entry stairs and elevated first floors, and ground level is often ventilated storage rather than living space. Stair carries get counted during the estimate, and they are included in the flat rate, so a raised house changes the plan, not the price.

Two pieces of state machinery are worth knowing as a new coastal resident. The South Carolina Emergency Management Division runs the Know Your Zone program, which maps coastal evacuation zones, and zone awareness is part of settling into any Lowcountry address. And when a major hurricane forces a coastal evacuation, SCDOT and the South Carolina Department of Public Safety reverse all lanes of I-26 from the Nexton Parkway crossover at Exit 197 near Summerville so the entire interstate flows inland toward Columbia, a standing practice the state rehearses in regular exercises. Look up your zone in the first week, not the first warning.

South Carolina puts driver licensing and vehicle titling and registration under a single agency, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, so new residents deal with one counter for both. The sequence is the part that surprises newcomers from California: South Carolina bills vehicle property tax at the county level, and the county tax is generally paid before the SCDMV completes a vehicle registration. How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

When The Two Dates Do Not Meet

Interstate moves very often have a gap: the house here closes or the lease ends on one date, and the keys at the other end come available on another. Sometimes it is three days, sometimes it is six weeks. Either way the answer is the same, and it is not a frantic sale of the furniture.

We store household goods, so the load can come off the truck here, wait, and go out again when the far end is ready, without a second company and a second set of hands on your things. Say on the first call which of the two dates is fixed and which is flexible, because that answer shapes the whole plan.

Why The Delivery Is A Date And Not A Window

Ask any long-distance mover for the delivery date and listen to whether you get a date or a window. A two week window usually means the load has not been placed with a driver yet, and the company quoting you does not know who will actually be driving.

Ours is arithmetic. We cover about 550 miles a day, counted from the day AFTER we load, because load day is a working day rather than a driving one. That gives a date, and it is the date on the paperwork. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day we load.
