Texas isn’t one destination. It’s five. El Paso is a ~725-mile I-8/I-10 run, close enough for quick turnarounds and Fort Bliss military moves. San Antonio (~1,275), Austin (~1,300), Dallas–Fort Worth (~1,330–1,360), and Houston (~1,470) are all delivered day 4. Dallas–Fort Worth loads leave I-10 for I-20 near Kent, while San Antonio and Houston loads stay on I-10 across the long, empty stretch of West Texas, where fuel stops are planned rather than improvised. Census Bureau migration estimates put California to Texas at the largest state-to-state move in the country, driven by no state income tax and a housing-cost gap everyone moving already knows by heart.

Destination character matters on arrival day. Austin’s older central neighborhoods have tight streets and aggressive towing; DFW and Houston are sprawl with easy truck access but serious summer heat and, on the Gulf side, hurricane-season scheduling from June through November; San Antonio adds Joint Base San Antonio military volume. Houston Street Logic

HOW HOUSTON ADDRESSES ACTUALLY WORK

Houston has no conventional zoning code, which is the structural fact behind its mixed blocks, where townhomes, taquerias, and machine shops share a street. Neighborhood land-use rules live in recorded deed restrictions instead, and the City of Houston's Legal Department is authorized to help enforce them. The map reads as rings: Loop 610 wraps the urban core, Beltway 8 and its Sam Houston Tollway form the second ring, and the Grand Parkway, State Highway 99, arcs through the outer suburbs. Locals place an address as inside or outside the Loop before they name a street; borrow the habit when you describe your new place to us.

The Heights shows how specific those rules get. Platted in 1891 as a streetcar suburb, it governed itself as a separate city until residents voted to join Houston in 1918, and its city-designated historic districts now put exterior changes under review; the blocks mean narrow lots, mature trees, and neighbors who know the deed restrictions by heart. In Montrose and EaDo, small-lot development rules produced canyons of three- and four-story townhomes with tuck-under garages and shared driveways, so the truck stages on the street and the last stretch travels by hand and dolly. And when a truck must block a lane, sidewalk, or curb in Houston's right of way, the permit comes from the Houston Permitting Center, issued by the Office of the City Engineer at Houston Public Works.

Gulf Air, Bayou Ground

ONE LOAD, A DESERT, THEN THE SUBTROPICS

Texas flips climates on the way east. Dry desert air holds from El Paso roughly to the Hill Country, then Gulf humidity takes over as I-10 drops toward Houston, so the same load can leave marine-layer San Diego, cross a desert, and arrive in humid subtropical air. For furniture, the last stretch matters. Gulf humidity is the opposite of San Diego's marine air: solid wood takes on moisture and swells, doors and drawers can stick through the first humid season, and a piano should sit and acclimate before its first Houston tuning. El Paso is the gentle landing by comparison, dry year-round and close to what your pieces already knew in inland Southern California.

Houston is also a bayou city. It drains through slow, flat waterways, Buffalo Bayou runs straight through downtown, and locals discuss any address floodplain-first; newcomers pick up the habit quickly, including thinking twice about what gets stored at garage level. Storage culture follows the air, too. Sealed plastic and shrink wrap that were harmless in dry San Diego can trap humidity in a Houston garage, so anything stored on the Gulf side needs airflow, and mold awareness simply becomes part of unpacking there.

The 1718 Grid

STREETS THAT BEND AROUND A RIVER

San Antonio grew from a mission settlement founded in 1718, and its downtown streets still bend around the river and the lines of colonial-era acequias, so blocks are irregular and turns are tight by Texas standards. The five Spanish missions, the Alamo among them, were named a World Heritage Site in 2015. The River Walk sits one level below the street grid, and many downtown buildings keep separate street-level and river-level entrances, with trucks and deliveries working the street level while the river level stays pedestrian.

North of downtown the map plays a trick. Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, and Terrell Hills look like San Antonio neighborhoods but are separately incorporated cities inside the city's footprint, each with its own hall and its own rules at the curb, and Monte Vista, an in-city historic district of early-1900s homes, reviews exterior changes. When an unload needs a street or lane closure, the request goes through the Right-of-Way Management Section of San Antonio's Public Works Department, which routes it past the fire and police departments before a permit is issued. At about 1,275 miles, San Antonio is a day 4 delivery.

Mountain Time Texas

EL PASO RUNS ON ITS OWN CLOCK

From Tucson, I-10 crosses the Arizona-New Mexico line, passes Las Cruces, and drops into El Paso at the far western tip of Texas, where the state line and the first Texas metro arrive almost together. At about 725 miles from San Diego, El Paso is closer to San Diego by road than it is to Houston; the road remaining across Texas is longer than the entire run that got you there. That geography sets the schedule: at 550 miles a day starting the day after we load, the first road night falls near the Arizona-New Mexico line, and day 3 covers the rest of the 725 miles into El Paso.

The city itself is split by the Franklin Mountains, which rise in the middle of El Paso and run north to the New Mexico line. The Westside and the Northeast are separate driving worlds, linked by Transmountain Drive, Loop 375, through Smugglers Pass, or by the freeways around the southern tip of the range, so which side of the mountains you are landing on shapes the final approach. One more detail worth knowing when the delivery date is set: El Paso keeps Mountain Time while the rest of Texas runs on Central.

The Kent Fork

WHERE DFW LOADS LEAVE I-10

Every Texas load leaves San Diego the same way, on I-8 east until it ends at I-10 just southeast of Casa Grande, Arizona, then runs through Tucson into New Mexico. The fork that decides your corner of Texas comes near Kent, in the empty country of West Texas, where I-20 splits away from I-10: Fort Worth and Dallas loads bear northeast on I-20, while San Antonio and Houston loads stay on I-10. Texas is wide enough that crossing the state line settles nothing; the Kent fork is the moment your move commits.

Fort Worth, at about 1,330 miles, is a day 4 delivery with its own arrival geography, from the Stockyards to the Near Southside, which is a state-designated cultural district with the Magnolia Avenue corridor running through it. The New-Resident List

PLATES, TOLLS, AND A TAX THAT CANNOT COME BACK

Texas has no state income tax on individuals, and since a 2019 amendment approved by statewide vote, the state constitution, at Article 8, Section 24-a, prohibits enacting one. Undoing it would take another statewide constitutional vote, so for arriving Californians it is a structural fact, not a policy that shifts with a legislature.

Vehicle paperwork splits two ways. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, TxDMV, writes the rules and holds the records, while the counter work of titling and registering a newly arrived car happens at your county tax assessor-collector's office. A new resident has 30 days from moving to Texas to register the vehicle, and the driver license deadline is a separate 90 days. Under TxDMV Registration and Title Bulletin #001-26, issued February 18, 2026, an out-of-state registration or a first-time Texas registration also requires valid unexpired identification and proof of legal status, which the county tax office must verify before it will process the transaction. Budget for the new resident tax before you go. Texas Tax Code section 152.023 sets a flat $90 tax on a vehicle you bring in that was already registered in your name in another state, and you pay it to the county tax assessor-collector when you title and register. It is due within 30 calendar days of the vehicle’s first use in Texas, and 60 days if you are on active duty. The flat $90 is the favorable case and it replaces the 6.25 percent motor vehicle use tax rather than adding to it, but it only applies if the car was previously registered to you somewhere else. A car you bought shortly before the move and never registered in your own name does not qualify, and the percentage applies instead. You get no credit for motor vehicle tax you already paid to California. Many counties additionally require a VIN verification for a vehicle carrying an out-of-state title, and proof of Texas liability insurance is required at the counter.

Texas ended its annual vehicle safety inspection for noncommercial vehicles under House Bill 3297, effective January 1, 2025. Emissions inspections still apply in 17 counties before registration: the nine-county Dallas-Fort Worth area (Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant), the five-county Houston area (Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery), Travis and Williamson counties in the Austin area, and El Paso County. Bexar County, covering San Antonio, joins the program on November 1, 2026. Confirm the current county list with TxDMV, DPS or TCEQ before registering.

Toll roads are woven into daily driving in DFW and Houston, run by regional authorities rather than the state: the North Texas Tollway Authority's TollTag in DFW and the Harris County Toll Road Authority's EZ TAG in greater Houston, with either tag working on toll roads statewide. TxDOT exited the statewide TxTag business, handing customer accounts to HCTRA in December 2024; txtag.org closed to new accounts and payments on February 22, 2025 and the account migration finished in July 2025. Existing TxTag stickers still work, but a newcomer opening a fresh account sets up with the regional authority for the metro they land in.

Official State Soil

WHY YOUR NEW NEIGHBORS WATER THE FOUNDATION

Texas houses overwhelmingly sit on slab-on-grade foundations poured over expansive clay, and Houston Black clay, the official state soil of Texas, underlies much of the Blackland Prairie through the DFW corridor. The clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and that movement is what moves slabs.

Which explains a habit that surprises every arriving Californian: foundation watering. In dry summers, homeowners run soaker hoses around the slab so the clay does not shrink away beneath it. It is ordinary maintenance there, on the same first-season list as the toll tag and the registration counter.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

When The Two Dates Do Not Meet

Interstate moves very often have a gap: the house here closes or the lease ends on one date, and the keys at the other end come available on another. Sometimes it is three days, sometimes it is six weeks. Either way the answer is the same, and it is not a frantic sale of the furniture.

We store household goods, so the load can come off the truck here, wait, and go out again when the far end is ready, without a second company and a second set of hands on your things. Say on the first call which of the two dates is fixed and which is flexible, because that answer shapes the whole plan.

Packing: Yours, Ours, Or Both

On an interstate move the packing matters more than it does on a local one, because the load is on the road for days rather than hours. A box packed loosely survives a trip across town and does not survive a thousand miles. We pack full or partial, and plenty of families do the books and the clothes themselves and leave the kitchen and the fragile things to us.

One thing to know either way: cartons you packed yourself are recorded differently on the inventory from cartons the crew packed, because nobody from the crew saw what went in. That is not a trap, it is just how the paperwork works, and it is worth understanding before you sign it rather than after.
