NEW ORLEANS PLAYS BY ITS OWN RULES

The I-10 run lands at Baton Rouge (~1,750 miles) and New Orleans (~1,830) on day 5, while the I-20 lane reaches Shreveport (~1,560) on day 4. Then New Orleans starts making its own rules. The French Quarter and the older crescent neighborhoods were laid out for carriages: narrow one-ways, low galleries, and curb space that fills early. The rule that actually governs is the city ordinance for the Vieux Carre (Code of Ordinances Ch. 154, Art. XIV), which bars vehicles and truck-tractors 36 feet or longer from the Quarter except under a special Department of Public Works permit specifying route and speed, with a $500 penalty for a first offense and $1,000 for a second. Our 26 ft box truck is under that threshold, so what decides the last few blocks is street width, one-way patterns and gallery clearance at your address, and historic-district deliveries often still finish with a smaller shuttle. We plan that (and price it) before the truck leaves California.

The rest of the playbook is Gulf-standard, intensified: serious humidity (climate-controlled storage only), a tropical forecast watched from June through November and planned around when the trip is routed, and afternoon thunderstorms that pause a summer unload for twenty minutes. Tropical systems are not a coastal-only problem in this state; north Louisiana gets them too. And Barksdale Air Force Base, which the Shreveport lane serves, is in Bossier City, in Bossier Parish, across the Red River from Shreveport in Caddo Parish.

THE SHOTGUN HOUSE CHANGES HOW A CREW UNLOADS

The shotgun house is the signature historic house form of New Orleans, built to fit the city's long, narrow lots, and in its basic form it is one room wide with no interior hallway. That means every piece of furniture travels room through room, from the front door straight back, passing through each space on the way. Shotguns come as singles and as doubles that share one facade behind two front doors, and the camelback variant adds a partial second story at the rear reached by a narrow stair, which turns a simple unload into a planned stair carry for the bedroom furniture. Creole cottages, an early house type common in the Vieux Carre, Treme, and Faubourg Marigny, work the same way: no hallways, rooms opening directly into one another. In a house like that, door-by-door measurements matter more than square footage, so a five-minute walkthrough of doorway widths before we load saves an hour of puzzling on delivery day.

Steps and Oaks

UPTOWN STARTS WITH A STAIRCASE AND ENDS UNDER THE TREES

Uptown and in the Garden District, raised center-hall houses and the local raised-basement type put the main living floor above a ground-level story. Delivery day at one of these addresses starts with a flight of exterior steps before the first sofa crosses the threshold. We size the crew for that climb at the estimate, and it is included in the flat rate.

The same neighborhoods sit under a canopy of mature live oaks, and along the Garden District and the St. Charles Avenue corridor those limbs overhang the streets. For a tall box truck that is a clearance consideration, one our drivers plan around before arrival rather than discover from the cab.

Who Controls the Curb

PARKING THE TRUCK IS A CITY QUESTION, AND EACH CITY ANSWERS IT DIFFERENTLY

In New Orleans, temporary curb and parking arrangements for a moving truck go through the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works, which administers on-street parking and temporary parking restrictions. We file for that as soon as your delivery date is set, well before the truck leaves California. One piece of local vocabulary arrives on day one: New Orleanians call a street median the neutral ground, and parking on it is illegal year round, moving day included.

Baton Rouge runs on a consolidated city-parish government, the City of Baton Rouge and the Parish of East Baton Rouge together, so anything that encroaches into the public right of way is permitted through the city-parish offices. Metairie, in neighboring Jefferson Parish, is the suburban counterweight to all of this: wider streets, driveways, and one-story slab houses where a full-size truck usually parks at the door with no shuttle needed.

Two Lanes In

ONE LANE TO THE GULF TIER, ANOTHER TO THE RED RIVER

The southern lane runs I-8 east out of San Diego across the desert to meet I-10 in central Arizona between Phoenix and Tucson, then rides I-10 through Tucson, across New Mexico, and the full width of Texas through El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston. It crosses into Louisiana at the Sabine River and runs the Gulf tier through Lake Charles, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge into New Orleans. The Shreveport lane splits off in far west Texas and follows I-20 east through Dallas-Fort Worth to the Red River, where Shreveport-Bossier City sits in the state's northwest corner.

Between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, I-10 rides the elevated spans of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge across a vast river swamp, a long stretch with scarce exits that our drivers treat as a commit-and-cross segment of the day. And I-49 ties the state's two interstate tiers together, running north from Lafayette through Alexandria to Shreveport, which is how one truck can serve both ends of Louisiana on a single trip plan.

At 550 miles a day starting the day after loading, the first overnight falls in southern Arizona, the second around El Paso, and the third in central Texas. Shreveport, at about 1,560 miles, is delivered day 4. Baton Rouge at about 1,750 miles and New Orleans at about 1,830 are delivered day 5. Either way, your delivery is a date agreed in writing before we load.

Parish Paperwork

SIXTY-FOUR PARISHES AND A LEGAL SYSTEM ALL ITS OWN

Louisiana is the only state whose private law descends from the civil-law tradition of the Napoleonic Code rather than English common law, and newcomers meet that quickly in how property, sales, and successions are papered. The map changes too: Louisiana has parishes instead of counties, 64 of them, so the address line that read San Diego County becomes Orleans Parish, East Baton Rouge Parish, Caddo Parish, Bossier Parish, or Jefferson Parish after the move.

Driver licensing and vehicle registration for new residents run through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV), part of the state Department of Public Safety. A new resident has 30 days from establishing residency to get a Louisiana driver license and 30 days to register an out-of-state vehicle, and Louisiana asks for a safety inspection certificate, the brake tag, rather than an emissions test inside that same period. Homeowners claim the homestead exemption on a primary residence by filing with their parish assessor, the Orleans Parish Assessor for New Orleans, and that filing belongs on the first-month checklist next to the OMV visit.

Registering a car brought in from another state also triggers Louisiana use tax, commonly called road use tax, charged at the state rate plus parish and municipal rates and assessed on the vehicle NADA loan value rather than on what you paid, with credit for sales tax already paid to another state. Act 11 of the 2024 Third Extraordinary Session caps that tax at $90 for a qualifying new resident, where the vehicle is used mainly for personal purposes, was already registered or leased in your own name in another state, and is registered in Louisiana within 90 days of being brought in. Those are two separate clocks and they are easy to blur: registration itself is due within 30 days, while the $90 cap depends on registering within 90 days, so registering inside the 30 days satisfies both.

Pumps and Parades

A CITY BELOW SEA LEVEL KEEPS ITS OWN CALENDAR

Much of New Orleans sits at or below sea level and sheds rainwater only through the pumping system run by the Sewerage and Water Board, an institution dating to 1899. An intense downpour can put temporary water in the streets, which is a sane reason to build slack into the hour-by-hour plan for an unload day. Your delivery date holds; the crew simply works around the sky. Water shows up as a cost question too, not only a scheduling one: under FEMA Risk Rating 2.0, National Flood Insurance Program premiums are priced from the individual structure, its elevation, its distance to water and its rebuild cost rather than from the flood-zone map alone, so two houses on the same New Orleans block can carry very different premiums. The document to ask for before you sign is the elevation certificate for that specific address.

Mardi Gras season, the weeks before Ash Wednesday in February or March, is a real scheduling constraint: parade routes along corridors like St. Charles and Napoleon carry strict parking bans with active towing. One more piece of local reality: New Orleans has a long-established population of Formosan subterranean termites, which argues for keeping wood furniture, crates, and cardboard off bare ground and out of damp garages once your goods are delivered.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

A long-distance price is only as good as the look that produced it. We survey the load before quoting, in person or over video, because a number produced from a room count and a hopeful guess is the number that changes at pickup. What we are counting is volume and access: how much goes on the truck, what has to be dismantled, how far the carry is at each end, and whether a full-size truck can physically reach the door.

What comes back is one flat rate for the whole move, agreed in writing before anything is loaded. Not an estimate that firms up later, not a range, and not a price per pound settled at a weigh station. And we take no deposit, in any form, at any point. If a company wants money before it has seen your load, that is worth a second thought rather than a card number.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

When The Two Dates Do Not Meet

Interstate moves very often have a gap: the house here closes or the lease ends on one date, and the keys at the other end come available on another. Sometimes it is three days, sometimes it is six weeks. Either way the answer is the same, and it is not a frantic sale of the furniture.

We store household goods, so the load can come off the truck here, wait, and go out again when the far end is ready, without a second company and a second set of hands on your things. Say on the first call which of the two dates is fixed and which is flexible, because that answer shapes the whole plan.

Why The Delivery Is A Date And Not A Window

Ask any long-distance mover for the delivery date and listen to whether you get a date or a window. A two week window usually means the load has not been placed with a driver yet, and the company quoting you does not know who will actually be driving.

Ours is arithmetic. We cover about 550 miles a day, counted from the day AFTER we load, because load day is a working day rather than a driving one. That gives a date, and it is the date on the paperwork. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day we load.

What You Should Carry Yourself

Some things should never go on a truck that will be out of your sight for several days, and it has nothing to do with trusting the crew. Passports, birth certificates, wills, titles and deeds. Current medication and the prescriptions for it. Jewelry, cash, and the small irreplaceable things that have no resale value and cannot be replaced at any price.

Also worth carrying: the phone chargers, a change of clothes, whatever the children need to sleep, and the coffee. The truck arrives on its date, but you arrive on yours, and the gap between those two is much easier with a bag that has the essentials in it.

What Happens On Delivery Day

Delivery is not just the truck arriving. There is paperwork, and it matters. An interstate household goods move runs on a bill of lading, which is the contract, and an inventory listing what went on the truck and the condition it was in. On delivery you check items off that inventory as they come in.

The part people miss: if something is damaged or missing, note it on the paperwork before you sign, not afterwards. A signature on a clean delivery receipt is a statement that everything arrived as it left. Take your time over it. A crew that rushes you through signing is a crew to be wary of, and ours are told to wait.
