Do you handle moves INTO San Diego from other cities?
Yes, that is half our long-distance work: eleven dedicated inbound routes from Austin, Boise, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Phoenix, Portland, Raleigh and Seattle, plus anywhere else on a quoted basis. One flat rate agreed in writing before we load, we are the carrier rather than a broker, and anything within 200 miles of San Diego, including Los Angeles, is delivered the same day it is loaded.
How much does the local end of a San Diego move cost?
Our local rates are published: $119 an hour cash ($129 card) for two movers with a 3-hour minimum of $357 and a flat $75 fuel fee, up the ladder to $269 an hour cash for five movers. No deposit, ever, on any move. Long-distance moves are one flat written rate instead of an hourly bill.
Can you store our things if the new home is not ready?
Yes. We store household goods at our own Miramar facility, loaded and inventoried by our own crew, which is the common bridge when a lease ends before an escrow closes.

State Deadlines That Start On Arrival
California starts two clocks the day you become a resident. The DMV's New California Resident guide says you must get a California driver license within 10 days, and you have 20 days to register a vehicle that was previously registered in another state. Both deadlines are shorter than most people expect, so book the DMV appointment before the truck is unloaded rather than after. The 20-day vehicle window also applies if you take a job in California before you formally move.
Registering an out-of-state car takes more than a form. The DMV's out-of-state registration guide requires a smog certification from a California smog station for gasoline vehicles from model year 1976 and newer, and for diesel vehicles from 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,001 pounds. Motorcycles are exempt from smog. The vehicle also needs a VIN verification, which the same DMV guide explains.
Voting is the easier one. The San Diego County Registrar of Voters says that if you have already given your new address to the DMV or the U.S. Postal Service, your voter registration is updated automatically. Otherwise you should be registered at least 15 days before an election, and if you miss that date you can still register conditionally and vote provisionally, as the Registrar's registration page explains.
Getting Around On MTS
San Diego's transit system is MTS, and the fare card is called PRONTO. Per the MTS fare chart, an adult one-way fare is $2.50 and includes unlimited transfers for two hours across bus and trolley. PRONTO uses fare capping: once you spend $6 in a day you have earned a day pass and stop being charged, and once you spend $72 in a calendar month you have earned a month pass. You never have to decide in advance whether a pass is worth it.
You can ride without buying a card. The MTS ways to pay page says you can tap a credit card, debit card, mobile wallet or wearable on a PRONTO validator. A physical PRONTO card costs a one-time $2 and is sold at ticket machines, the MTS Transit Store and retail outlets. The trolley runs three lines, the UC San Diego Blue Line, the Orange Line and the Green Line, which is useful to know when you are choosing a neighborhood before the move rather than after.
Parking Permits, Trash Fees And Dog Licenses
Some City of San Diego streets sit inside residential permit parking districts. The City's residential permit parking page says permits are requested online only and are no longer issued over the counter; each permit costs $11.50 a year, a maximum of four permits are allowed per qualifying address, and every delinquent parking citation must be paid before a permit is issued. The permit is tied to a specific license plate, so if your car still carries out-of-state plates, plan the DMV registration and the parking permit in that order.
Trash collection in the City of San Diego is no longer free. Under Measure B, which voters passed in 2022, the City may charge a cost-recovery fee, and the City's Measure B page explains that the fee is collected through the County tax roll, paid the same way as annual property taxes. The rate is set by fiscal year, so check the City's page for the current figure. City service covers single-family homes and multifamily properties with up to four residences on a lot that sit on a public street.
Dogs need a license within 30 days of arriving. The San Diego Humane Society sells licenses on behalf of the City of San Diego and its other contract cities, citing California Health and Safety Code 121690, which requires a license within 30 days after a dog enters the jurisdiction. If your new address is in an unincorporated part of the county, the County Department of Animal Services handles it instead, with the same 30-day window and proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Enrolling Children In San Diego Unified
San Diego Unified School District enrolls new students online. The district's new student online enrollment page says a parent or guardian of a student who is new to the district and will attend the neighborhood school can use the Student Online Enrollment portal, and the district provides a Find Your Neighborhood School lookup so you can confirm which school your new address feeds before you sign a lease.
Beginning with the 2026-27 school year the district moved to a fully online enrollment process, per its enrollment announcement, covering new students, former students returning to the district and every student entering Transitional Kindergarten. Parents upload the enrollment documents online, proof of address among them. Keep those documents out of the moving boxes and in the car with you, since proof of address is exactly the paper that goes missing the week of a move.

How long do I have to get a California driver license after moving to San Diego?
Ten days. The California DMV's New California Resident guide says you must get a California driver license within 10 days of becoming a resident, and you have 20 days to register a vehicle that was previously registered in another state.
