Into Point Loma
Hillside homes mean stair runs and narrow streets. Liberty Station is straightforward but its buildings often want a move-in window booked in advance. Our Point Loma movers page covers the access detail street by street, and what a move costs is one page with the whole rate card on it: $119 an hour cash or $129 by card for two movers, a three hour minimum of $357 at the cash rate, a flat $75 fuel fee, and no deposit at any point.
Living Under the Airport Flight Path
Aircraft noise is part of daily life on the peninsula, and the airport's own program materials list Loma Portal and Ocean Beach among the communities inside its noise contour. San Diego International Airport has kept a nighttime departure curfew since the 1970s that prohibits takeoffs between 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m., with exemptions for lifeguard and emergency flights. The curfew applies to departures. If you are touring homes, visit once on a weekday morning after 6:30 a.m. so you hear the departure bank rather than a quiet Sunday afternoon.
Homes inside the airport's 65 decibel noise contour may qualify for the Quieter Home Program, and Loma Portal and Ocean Beach are among the eligible communities. Before you sign, ask the seller or landlord whether the unit has already been treated, and read the program page for what it covers and how addresses are prioritized.
How the Peninsula Is Governed
The City of San Diego plans Point Loma under the Peninsula Community Plan, which covers about 4,409 acres, roughly seven square miles. The plan names the residential neighborhoods you will see in listings: Ocean Beach Highlands, Point Loma Highlands, Loma Alta, Loma Palisades, Loma Portal, Fleetridge, Roseville, Sunset Cliffs, Wooded Area, La Playa and Liberty Station. Point Loma Village and Point Loma Nazarene University are listed as commercial cores. Knowing which of these you are in matters when you read a permit notice or a listing.
Land use questions go first to the Peninsula Community Planning Board, which meets at the Point Loma/Hervey Library, 3701 Voltaire Street. At City Hall, Point Loma is part of Council District 2, alongside Ocean Beach, Midway, Old Town, Mission Beach, Mission Bay Park and Clairemont. That is the council office to contact about anything the city controls on your street, from a permit dispute to a request for a new sign.
Navy households arriving on orders have a separate starting point. Navy Housing publishes an NAVBASE Point Loma housing page in its Southwest region listings, and that is the place to begin before signing a civilian lease near the base. Parks and Shoreline You Will Actually Use
Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of the peninsula is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The visitor center and bookstore open at 10:00 a.m., and trail and tidepool hours are posted on the same page, so check them before planning an evening walk. The park charges an entrance fee per vehicle, with the current amounts posted on its fees page.
Sunset viewing happens instead at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, a 68 acre city park dedicated in 1983 along the western edge of the peninsula. The 18 acre linear section runs west of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, and the City's page for the park lists its rules and permit conditions.
Liberty Station's open space is NTC Park, 46 acres at 2455 Cushing Road with four multi-purpose fields, two tot lot playgrounds, a basketball court and picnic areas for events. Field permits are issued by appointment through the Cabrillo Recreation Center at 3051 Canon Street, which also has two tennis courts, meeting rooms and a kiln room, and takes reservations at 619-531-1534.
Getting Around Without a Car
MTS Route 923 runs from Downtown to Point Loma by way of Ocean Beach and Liberty Station, but only on weekdays. It does not run on weekends or on Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas. If your commute depends on it, check whether your employer's schedule matches before you count on it, and plan a different route for Saturday errands.
Route 28 is the everyday line, running from Old Town Transit Center down the peninsula to Shelter Island and serving Cabrillo Monument. Riders on Route 923 who need Old Town transfer to Route 28 at Rosecrans Street and Canon Street. Check the current timetable on the MTS site before a move, since the schedule effective dates change during the year.
