Borrego Springs is where San Diego County’s cart culture goes full desert: an Anza-Borrego valley town where the Roadrunner Club and De Anza Country Club were built around cart life, Rams Hill runs its championship course, and the nearest freeway is a mountain range away. Getting a golf cart there (or out) is a genuine expedition: a long run on two-lane county highways, finishing with the S-22 Montezuma Grade’s ~3,000-foot switchback descent to the valley floor. We make that run on a schedule, with the cart frame-strapped to our own flatbed behind commercial brakes, because the alternative (a borrowed trailer on that grade, in that heat, with a driver who has not done it before) is where cart-moving stories go wrong.
The valley’s rhythm is seasonal and so is its cart logistics. October through May, Borrego lives: courses full, Christmas Circle busy, carts everywhere on the communities’ streets. Acre State Park
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park covers 600,000 acres and about 500 miles of dirt roads, and California State Parks calls it the largest state park in the contiguous United States. Its north half surrounds the community, so the exact address and the last paved approach get settled at booking.
Inside the park only street-legal vehicles are allowed, they have to stay on established roadways, and the California Vehicle Code applies on all of them, the dirt roads included. A golf cart that is not registered as a low-speed vehicle does not clear that bar, so park land is never a shortcut between two valley addresses: the cart rides on our deck. Borrego Springs is also unincorporated, which puts cart use on a County-maintained road under County authority rather than a city’s, and the County of San Diego traffic guidelines say combined use of County-maintained roadways by unlicensed golf carts and motor vehicles is “solely intended to provide access to, and facilitate the use of, golf facilities.” The state framework behind that sits in our California cart law guide.

In Borrego Springs, summer sets the start time. The National Weather Service San Diego office’s Day in History sheet for September 10 records 117°F at Borrego Springs in 1990, which it lists as the highest temperature on record for September. That is a record rather than an ordinary afternoon, but it is the ceiling the valley plans against: a summer run loads in the early morning, and the crew plan carries water and shade stops. The other end of the day is fixed too. The International Dark-Sky Association, now DarkSky International, certified Borrego Springs as an International Dark Sky Community in 2009, the second in the world. That is the whole point of the designation: there is very little artificial light here once the sun is down. Between heat at one end and darkness at the other, the valley’s working hours are narrower than the coast’s, and the schedule we give you is built around them.
