Naval Base San Diego at 32nd Street is the Navy's Pacific Fleet surface force installation, and the Navy counts 54 home ported ships and over 150 tenant commands there. The moving pattern around it reflects that. A lot of the work is sailors moving in and out on short notice, deployments that start before a lease ends, and families spread south and east through National City, Chula Vista and Eastlake. Storage matters more here than at any other San Diego installation, because ships leave on their own schedule. We support personally procured moves and we are not a contracted government carrier.

The families live south and east

The neighborhoods around this base are mostly easy to work in. National City sits closest, older housing stock on a grid with reasonable street access. Chula Vista and Eastlake carry the largest share of family housing, newer suburban development with driveways and garages, which makes for fast loading. Bonita is more spread out with larger lots and some long driveways. Imperial Beach runs smaller coastal properties and older apartment stock where parking is the main constraint. Otay Ranch is newer still and the simplest of all to load. North of the base, Barrio Logan and Golden Hill pick up single sailors in apartments and converted stock where stairs and street parking matter. Gate Rules Come From The Base
Naval Base San Diego sets its own gate rules, and it publishes them. The base Security Department keeps a Base Access page and a separate Pass and Decal page on the Navy Region Southwest site, and the region adds a Base Access and Pass and ID FAQ that covers its installations generally. Those pages, not a moving company, decide who gets through the gate and with what paperwork. Read the current version in the week before your move rather than relying on what worked for a shipmate last year, because the base can change the policy without telling us.
What we need from you is the sponsor side. Once your housing office or command tells you what the base wants for a civilian crew, pass it on and we send the crew and truck details ahead of the date. Build that lead time into the plan, because a move booked for Friday with an access request started Thursday is the kind that ends with the truck waiting outside the gate. If the answer comes back that the crew cannot enter at all, tell us early and we will quote the job from the nearest address you can use off base instead.
Filing The PPM After We Leave
Military OneSource gives you 45 days from the planned move start date to turn in all PPM paperwork, and says your transportation office will need copies of your weight tickets, vehicle registration, moving receipts and a few other documents. Our invoice is the moving receipt, so keep it with the two weight tickets from the day rather than in a text thread. If we stored your goods, the storage invoice is a separate document, and storage at our Miramar facility starts at $205 a month. Ask the transportation office which of those receipts your claim can use before you assume.
The payment itself is based on the actual weight of the goods you transport, verified with weight tickets, and it cannot exceed your authorized weight entitlement. That is why the empty ticket matters as much as the loaded one: without both there is no verified net weight and no basis for the payment. Military OneSource also points to privately owned truck scale locations for anyone doing part of the move themselves, so if part of your household goes in your own vehicle, ask the transportation office how that portion gets weighed.
Housing Referral And Transit Near The Base
Navy Housing keeps a NAVBASE San Diego page on the Fleet and Family Readiness site, with a Contact Navy Housing page that lists every Housing Service Center and a Community Housing section for families who will rent or buy off base. That is the office that owns your housing date, not us, and a delivery date that gets ahead of the housing process is the main reason a fleet move ends up in storage. Tell us the date the Housing Service Center gave you and we will schedule to it; if that date moves, the storage step in the plan above covers the gap.
If your car is still in transit, or a spouse is meeting the truck while the sailor is aboard, the trolley reaches the base. MTS lists Pacific Fleet as a station on the Blue Line, one of the first three stations renovated under its Trolley Renewal project, and it describes the 8th Street station on the UC San Diego Blue Line as an access point to Naval Base San Diego with the entrance directly across Harbor Drive. Check the current schedule on the MTS site before you rely on it for a specific move-day time.
