Miramar sits in the middle of the county and the surrounding neighborhoods are straightforward to work in. Mira Mesa is the closest concentration of off base families, mostly single family homes and townhouses on wide streets with driveway access, which is about as easy as moving gets. Scripps Ranch is hillier with more cul de sacs and some long driveways where a truck placement conversation matters. Tierrasanta sits just south with older stock and tighter streets. Kearny Mesa mixes apartments and condos where elevator access and a certificate of insurance come into it. Poway and Rancho Peñasquitos pick up families who want more space and a short commute. Getting A Truck Through The Gate
Anyone without a DoD or military ID card enters MCAS Miramar through the East Gate, also called the Main Gate, which is off I-15 on Miramar Way and runs 24 hours a day. That is where the Visitor and Registration Center sits, in Building 6200, and the station lists 858-307-1463 for it. A visitor's pass calls for a driver's license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance, so our driver carries all three for the truck on the day. Give us the housing address with the booking so the pass and the paperwork name the same place.
Base passes at Miramar run through DBIDS, and the process starts with an authorized sponsor who holds a government issued CAC. A member or a spouse with a CAC can act as that sponsor. Send us the sponsor's name when you book and we will supply whatever driver and vehicle details the sponsor is asked for, ahead of the date rather than at the gate.
The PPM Paperwork Behind The Move
The office that handles personal property at Miramar is the Distribution Management Office in Building 2258, the JRC, and the station lists (858) 307-1670 for it on weekdays. A PPM is set up in DPS by clicking the HHG shipment and selecting YES for a personally procured move, and the station's walkthrough says you must meet with a counselor at DMO Personal Property as the last step before the move is finalized. Do that before we load, because the counseling is part of the required sequence, not a formality to catch up on later.
The Miramar PPM checklist requires certified weight tickets showing gross, meaning full, and tare, meaning empty, with each ticket identified by what was weighed, such as rental truck full or rental truck empty. Ask us to mark our tickets the same way so the truck is named on both. For the initial paperwork the DMO asks you to estimate 1,000 pounds per room, including the garage and any storage areas, so count those spaces when you fill out the form rather than discovering them on load day.
Military OneSource puts the paperwork deadline at 45 days from the planned move start date, and lists weight tickets, vehicle registration and moving receipts among what the transportation office will need. It also advises getting in writing that the moving company will provide full and empty weight tickets for every truck used, so ask us to put that commitment in the written estimate. The PPM allowance is now 100 percent of the estimated cost the government would have paid a moving company, and it includes a fuel surcharge.
Base Housing And Who Runs It
On base housing at MCAS Miramar is run through a public-private partnership with Liberty Military Housing, which manages the greater San Diego region, and the housing number the station lists is 619-556-8443. That office sets your move in and move out dates, so its calendar decides when we load or deliver. When the report date and the housing date do not agree, the goods go into storage at our Miramar facility and come out when the keys do.
For a move into base housing, give us the assigned address the day you receive it, and give the housing office our company name so the gate and the housing staff expect the same truck. Our storage sits at 8775 Miramar Pl, San Diego 92121, so a delivery out of storage to base housing is scheduled against your housing date rather than against a distant warehouse. Packing and unpacking can be added to either end, which matters when the member is already at the new duty station.
