An IT move is a sequencing job with fragile cargo attached. The order matters more than the lifting. Network and servers come down last at the old site and go up first at the new one, because everything else depends on them. Cabling gets labeled at both ends before anything is unplugged, since a rack that arrives with an unlabeled loom is a day nobody planned for. We move the hardware and we rack it. Powering systems back up, restoring services and testing belongs to your IT team or your managed service provider, and the schedule gets built so they are never waiting on us.

Every cable, port and rack unit photographed and tagged. The photographs are as useful as the labels when something does not come back cleanly.
Last down, first up
Servers and network come down at the end of the old site and go up at the start of the new one. Any other order leaves staff at desks that do not connect.
Racks travel differently depending on how they are loaded
A lightly loaded rack can travel populated. A heavy one gets emptied, with equipment moved separately and reracked. Weight, rack construction and the route decide which.
Static, shock and temperature all matter
Anti static handling, shock absorbing transport, and equipment never left in a hot truck. Short runs and direct routes rather than a full day on the road.
Your IT team owns power up and testing
We move it and rack it. Nobody on our crew logs into a machine, images a disk or erases one. Bringing services back and testing them is your team or your provider, and wiping or pulling drives happens before move day rather than after. We schedule so they start the moment the hardware is in place.

A UPS holds batteries, which federal transportation law addresses directly. We do not do hazmat, so this is the one item on an IT job where the rule decides what travels and what does not.
A sealed battery prepared the way the rule requires is not regulated cargo. Under 49 CFR 173.159a a non-spillable battery is excepted when it is protected against short circuits, securely packaged, and capable of withstanding the vibration and pressure differential tests without leakage of battery fluid. Non-spillable means the acid is gelled or held in a glass-fiber mat, the AGM and gel constructions, rather than a flooded cell. The same section also requires the battery and its outer packaging to be marked “NON-SPILLABLE” or “NON-SPILLABLE BATTERY.” Meet every condition in the section and the battery is not subject to the other requirements of the hazardous materials regulations, shipping papers, labeling and placarding among them, with incident reporting the exception.
For a unit with lithium cells, the packaging condition PHMSA states in 49 CFR 173.185 for equipment containing them is that it be packaged “in a manner to prevent short circuits, movement (i.e., shifting) within the outer package, and accidental activation of the equipment while in transportation.” Worth knowing: the 30 percent state-of-charge figure people quote is an air rule for cargo aircraft, not something that governs a truck. Worth knowing too that a battery pack moved on its own, without the unit it powers, stops being equipment containing a battery and becomes a battery shipment.
What that means in practice on your job. A UPS that meets those conditions travels with its batteries in place. One that does not, because the cells are flooded, swollen or leaking, is a unit we will not carry populated. Tell us at the survey if that is the case, and we build the schedule around your IT team or the UPS vendor pulling the modules first. Either way the chassis moves with the rest of the rack.
