What A Move In
La Jolla Costs
3 movers at $169 an hour cash, 4 to 6 hours for a 2 bedroom condominium in the Village or a hillside house above the Cove. That is $676 to $1014 in labor plus a flat $75 fuel fee, on our own ladder, which runs to $269 an hour cash for five movers.

The Arithmetic,
Done Out Loud
For a 2 bedroom condominium in the Village or a hillside house above the Cove, plan on 3 movers at $169 an hour cash for 4 to 6 hours. That is $676 to $1014 in labor, plus the flat $75 fuel fee, with a three hour minimum of $507 for that crew if the job finishes early. The crew is three, not two, because a 2 bedroom is 850 cubic feet, and 850 on two movers crosses our own 7 hour escalation line.
That is our own ladder, from $119 an hour cash for two movers up to $269 for five. We publish it, which most San Diego movers do not. There is no deposit at any point, and nothing is charged before move day.
What moves this number in La Jolla: Stair runs from the street on the hillsides, and a booked freight elevator plus a certificate of insurance in the Village buildings.
The Local Detail
Why La Jolla
Is Its Own Number
A Village condominium with a reserved elevator often runs shorter than a hillside house of the same size, because the carry is flat.
Our La Jolla movers page covers the access street by street, the full rate card is one page, and the instant estimate returns a crew size and an hourly rate in about 30 seconds.
Getting the truck to the door here decides the bill
La Jolla is not a city. It is a community planning area of the City of San Diego, so City of San Diego rules and enforcement apply on every public street here. The consequence for your quote: we cannot reserve curb space in front of your house. Whatever the sign says on the morning of the move is what the crew works with, so an early start matters more here than in a driveway neighborhood.
On Mount Soledad the streets wind and terrace with steep grades, limited shoulder and limited street parking. On the narrow lower switchback streets a 26 foot truck can get in but has nowhere to turn around, so we plan the approach and the departure in advance. Driveways there are short and steeply pitched, so we assume the truck stands on the street and the crew carries.
The Village has a working alley system and some properties garage off the alley rather than the street. An alley takes a straight truck but offers no room to turn, so it is in and out the same way. In the Barber Tract and around Windansea the streets are narrow with cottages set close to the street, so the truck often stands a house or two away.
In gated communities and on private streets the association controls its drives, loading area, elevator booking and move-in window, so arrange gate access in advance. We can supply a certificate of insurance, but we cannot open a gate and an HOA cannot reserve public curb. Routes in: the Village and the Shores from Interstate 5 by way of La Jolla Parkway and Torrey Pines Road, or via Ardath Road. La Jolla Farms and the north end from I-5 or I-805 by way of La Jolla Village Drive. Bird Rock and Windansea along La Jolla Boulevard.
Four kinds of La Jolla home, and they do not price alike
La Jolla is not uniformly slow. Small pre-war Village and Barber Tract cottages sit on narrow streets, often with no driveway apron and a detached or alley garage: low cube, slow doorways, a street only carry. Flat Shores and Bird Rock houses have real driveways and two and three car garages. Mount Soledad runs to tiered multi-level hillside homes.
If you are in a condominium, ask the building three things before you call for a price: whether it has an elevator, whether it can be reserved, and whether the association sets move-in hours or wants a certificate of insurance. Do not assume a La Jolla condo has an elevator. One subtracts 0.15 from the access factor in our estimator either way.
Which direction the stairs run is the La Jolla cost mechanism
Our calculator penalizes carrying up harder than carrying down. One flight subtracts 0.15 from the access factor going up against 0.08 going down. Two flights subtract 0.30 up against 0.16 down. Three flights 0.45 against 0.24. A long carry subtracts another 0.15, an elevator 0.15, and the factor never falls below 0.4.
Many homes on and below the Soledad roadways are built downslope of the street, with the front door below street level down a stepped path or an exterior stair, so on move out day every item goes up to the truck. Identical contents in a house above the road go down to it. Take a 3 bedroom at 1400 cubic feet, one exterior flight, 3 movers at $169 an hour cash, unloading flat. Downslope the factor is 0.85, the job runs 6.93 hours, labor about $1,171. Upslope the factor is 0.92, it runs 6.64 hours, labor about $1,146. About $49 for the same possessions, decided by which side of the road the door is on. Both plus the $75 fuel fee, both before drive time.
Two 850 cubic foot La Jolla moves, about $200 apart
A 2 bedroom is 850 cubic feet in our estimator. Out of a Village condominium with a reserved elevator, factor 0.85, into a flat house: 2 movers at 120 cubic feet an hour would take 7.71 hours, which trips our 7 hour escalation line, so the calculator puts 3 movers on it. Three movers at 220 cubic feet an hour finish in 4.20 hours, about $710 at $169 an hour cash plus the flat $75 fuel fee.
Take the same 850 cubic feet out of a Mount Soledad house, two flights up to the street plus a long carry, factor 0.55. Two movers would need 9.98 hours, so again 3 movers, who run 5.44 hours, about $919 plus the same $75. The hill costs roughly $200 more for identical contents, and that gap is stair direction and carry distance billed by the hour, not a surcharge.
The headline crew at the top of this page follows from the same arithmetic. Our calculator puts an 850 cubic foot 2 bedroom at 7.08 hours on 2 movers with perfect access at both ends, no stairs and no long carry, which already trips the 7 hour escalation. So the honest headline crew for a La Jolla 2 bedroom is 3 movers at $169 an hour cash. The $119 rate and the $357 three hour minimum hold on smaller jobs, not on a full 2 bedroom.
The 3 bedroom hillside job: three movers or four
A 3 bedroom is 1400 cubic feet, one truck. Put it on the hill, one flight up to the street plus a long carry, a factor of 0.70, unloading flat. Three movers run 7.73 hours, short of the 9 hour line where the calculator escalates to four, so labor is about $1,306 at $169 an hour cash plus the $75 fuel fee. Four movers finish in 6.18 hours, about $1,353 at $219. The larger crew is faster by about an hour and a half and costs about $47 more. We quote it both ways and we will not say the upgrade saves money, because it does not.
The flat streets below the hill cut the other way, against our own upsell. That identical 1400 cubic foot 3 bedroom, flat at both ends in La Jolla Shores or Bird Rock with a driveway and a short carry, runs 6.36 hours on 3 movers, about $1,075 plus the $75. A Shores 3 bedroom is not a premium job.
Muirlands and La Jolla Farms: four bedrooms means two trucks
Muirlands, La Jolla Country Club, Hidden Valley and La Jolla Farms run to large houses, so 4 bedroom and up jobs are ordinary here. Our truck math is fixed: cubic feet divided by 1800, rounded up. A 4 bedroom is 2000 cubic feet, so it is two trucks, which adds the $150 second truck fee and a second $75 fuel charge, so $300 in fees rather than $75. A 5 bedroom at 2650 cubic feet is also two trucks.
Worked through: 2000 cubic feet, one flight up at the load end for a factor of 0.85, flat at the unload end, runs 7.91 hours on 4 movers, under the 10 hour line where four escalates to five. At $219 an hour cash that is about $1,732 in labor, plus $150 for the second truck and two fuel fees of $75, so about $2,032 before drive time. There is still no deposit, and nothing is charged before move day.
