The Honest Part
When The Rental Truck Wins
A studio with lift access, two strong friends, and a Saturday: rent the truck. On raw price a DIY truck is consistently the cheapest way to move, and no honest mover will tell you otherwise. The costs that surprise first-timers are the ones off the sticker: mileage at roughly $0.79 to $1.39 a mile, coverage around $15 a day, the fuel you put back, and the fact that a 26-foot truck is a serious vehicle if you have never driven one.
Containers run 20 to 40 percent above a rental truck (2026 comparison guides) and you still load them yourself; what the premium buys is time and storage. Someone else drives, the box can sit in the driveway while you pack over a week, and a loaded container can wait at a storage center if your next home is not ready. For a move whose dates do not line up, that flexibility is the whole game.
Full-service is the most expensive option and the only one where loading, driving and unloading are all handled. The long-distance versions of these gaps are wider: one 2026 worked example (New York to Los Angeles, 2-bedroom) prices the DIY truck at $1,907 to $3,812, containers at $2,888 to $5,380, and full-service at $4,229 to $7,148 (Move.org). We do not transport containers or PODs, of any brand, ever, and we do not do international shipping. We do load and unload them: a container you rent, a U-Haul you drive, or a trailer you brought, at our hourly labor rate through our loading and unloading service. That hybrid, your equipment plus our crew, is how a lot of San Diego moves thread the needle between a DIY budget and a bad back.

In peak season, roughly May through September here with the military PCS cycle stacking on top of the normal summer surge, trucks, containers and crews all book ahead, whoever you choose.

Not Just A Company
Four brands dominate the container category, and the 2026 comparison data (moveBuddha, Move.org) separates them cleanly. U-Haul U-Box is usually the cheapest for small moves, around $300 to $700 local and $1,400 to $4,500 long distance. U-Pack often wins on long-distance price at $1,800 to $4,200, but it does not serve local moves under 100 miles and offers no on-site storage, so it is a relocation tool rather than a storage one. PODS and 1-800-PACK-RAT are the full-flexibility pair: cross-country two to three bedroom quotes run roughly $3,000 to $4,900 for PODS and $2,400 to $4,600 for PACK-RAT, bundled with about a month of storage.
The number to watch on any container quote is the first invoice, not the monthly headline. One documented 2026 example: a $275-a-month PODS quote became a $518 first invoice once the $125 delivery and $75 final pickup were added. None of that is hidden, but none of it is in the headline either.
