The Gap Move,
Explained

Move out and move in dates line up far less often than people expect, and in a tight rental market they often miss by weeks. The question is not whether to store, it is which kind of storage is cheapest for the length of your particular gap. For a few days, having a mover hold your goods on the truck or in their warehouse is usually simplest. For a few weeks or more, a self storage unit is normally cheaper, but you pay for two moves instead of one. The break even is shorter than most people guess.

Under a week, let the mover hold it

A single load in and out, no unit rental, no second handling. For short gaps this is almost always the cheapest and the least work.

Over a month, a unit is usually cheaper

But you are paying for two moves, in and out, plus the rent. Factor both when you compare, not just the monthly rate.

The break even is roughly one to three weeks

Depending on volume. Ask for both numbers rather than assuming, because volume moves the answer more than duration does.

Book the gap before you need it

San Diego storage fills in summer, and a gap discovered two days out is the most expensive version of this problem.

Pack for the gap, not just for the move

Anything you will need during the gap should travel with you, not into storage. This is the single most common regret in a gap move.

Six Ways
To Bridge It

Mover holds the load

Goods stay with the moving company between the two dates. One booking, one crew, no unit rental. Best for gaps of days.

Self storage unit

You rent, you pay monthly, and you pay for a move in and a move out. Cheapest for longer gaps, more handling overall.

Warehouse storage with the mover

Longer term storage held by the moving company, delivered out when you are ready. Fewer handovers than self storage and usually simpler.

Split the load

Essentials with you, the rest into storage. Cheaper and much less disruptive than storing everything, if you plan it before packing.

Overlap the leases

Not storage at all, but often cheaper than people assume. A week of double rent can beat two moves plus storage.

Stay flexible on the delivery date

Storage that can deliver out at short notice is worth more than a slightly cheaper rate, because gap dates move.

How To Make
A Gap Painless

1

Separate what you need during the gap

Clothes, documents, chargers, medication, work equipment, anything for children. Pack that separately and keep it with you. Get this wrong and you are paying to open a storage unit to find a phone charger.

2

Label for retrieval, not just for unpacking

If anything might need to come out during the gap, it goes near the door and gets labeled clearly. Nothing else needs that treatment.

3

Ask for one company end to end

A single company doing move out, storage and move in means one inventory, one point of accountability and no arguments about who damaged what.

4

Get the delivery flexibility in writing

Gap dates move. Confirm how much notice is needed to deliver out and whether short notice costs more.

5

Do not store what you should sell

A gap is the natural moment to purge. Storing furniture for two months that you will not want in the new place is money spent twice.

Gaps In The
San Diego Market

Gap moves are common here for reasons specific to the market. Summer is the busiest rental season, and June through August is when both storage availability and moving capacity tighten at once, which is exactly when most gaps occur. Military moves around Camp Pendleton, Miramar and 32nd Street produce gaps constantly, because report dates and base housing availability are set by different systems, and deployment storage is its own version of the same problem. Coastal rentals through Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and the beach communities turn over heavily around the end of summer. Purpose built downtown and UTC buildings usually have firm move in dates, which makes gaps shorter but less flexible. Our storage page covers what we hold directly.

Storage In Transit Under California Rules

Gap storage with a licensed California mover is not an informal favor. The Bureau of Household Goods and Services publishes the Maximum Rates and Rules for the Transportation of Used Property, known as the Max 4 tariff, which applies to permitted household movers and carries a storage-in-transit provision at Item 160. Before you agree to a gap move, ask whether your goods will be held under that storage-in-transit item, because the answer decides who is responsible for them while your new lease has not started.

The tariff states that when a shipment is not accorded storage-in-transit under Item 160, it is placed in the nearest warehouse of the mover, or at the mover's option in a public warehouse, after which the mover's liability ceases and liability becomes that of the warehouseman in possession. In plain terms, if your gap storage is written up as ordinary warehouse storage rather than storage-in-transit, the company that moved you may no longer be the company answerable for the goods. Get the arrangement named on your paperwork.

With us the question has a short answer. We store household goods at our Miramar facility only, at 8775 Miramar Pl, San Diego 92121, and the same company that loads you at the old place delivers to the new one. Storage starts from $205 per month. We hold a CAL-T permit, number 201759, issued by the BHGS, and there is no deposit to book the move or the storage. Call between 8am and 8pm any day and we will explain which arrangement fits the length of your gap.

Your Security Deposit And The Gap

The money most people count on to fund a gap move is the deposit from the old place, and California sets a firm clock on it. Under Civil Code section 1950.5, no later than 21 calendar days after you have vacated, the landlord must furnish an itemized statement showing the basis and amount of any deductions and return the remaining portion of the security. That statement goes out by personal delivery or first-class mail, so the landlord needs an address that will reach you during the gap.

Twenty-one days is longer than most gaps, which means the refund usually lands after you have already paid the new deposit, the movers and the storage. Budget the gap as if the old deposit does not exist, then treat it as a refund when it arrives. If your goods are in storage and you are staying with family or in a short rental, give the landlord that address or a forwarding address in writing before you hand over the keys, otherwise the statement and the check go to an apartment you no longer occupy.

A gap move also affects what the landlord can deduct. A unit emptied by a crew on the last day, with the storage load gone and the floor clear, is easier to leave clean than one emptied over several trips while you are living in it. If you are splitting the load, take the essentials out first and let the crew clear the rest in one pass, then do the cleaning with nothing in the way. The itemized statement is where any dispute about condition starts, so photograph each room after the truck leaves.

Mail And Address During The Gap

Storage solves the furniture problem but not the mail problem, and a gap is exactly when a deposit statement, a utility final bill or a lease document can go astray. The Postal Service offers a temporary change of address for relocations of 15 days up to 1 year, which fits a gap spent with family or in a short-term rental. Point it at wherever you are sleeping during the gap, not at the storage facility, and switch to a permanent change of address once the new lease begins.

Timing matters more than most people expect. USPS says forwarding may begin within 3 business days of the request but advises allowing up to 2 weeks, so file it before the crew arrives rather than the day after. First-Class Mail and periodicals are forwarded at no charge, along with Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage items, but USPS Marketing Mail is not forwarded. Setting up the request online involves a $1.25 identity verification fee. Anything that arrives as marketing mail, including some account notices, will simply stop.

Pair the forwarding request with the list you made when separating gap essentials. Passports, vehicle titles, checkbooks and anything with an account number should travel with you rather than into the storage load, and each account tied to the old address should be told the temporary one. The goal is that on move-in day the only thing left to update is the permanent address, and nothing time-sensitive spent the gap sitting in a mailbox at a unit you have already returned the keys for.

Questions

For a gap of a few days, with a mover, almost always. For a month or more, a self storage unit is usually cheaper on paper, but remember you are paying for two moves rather than one. The break even is roughly one to three weeks depending on volume, so ask for both numbers.
Yes, and that is the most common gap request. Your load stays with us and is delivered when your new place is ready. One crew, one inventory and no unit to rent.
Tell us as early as you can and we will rebook. Gap dates move constantly and we plan for that, but delivery slots in summer are genuinely tight, so early notice makes a real difference.
Split it if you can. Keep what you will need during the gap with you and store the rest. It is cheaper, and it avoids the very common situation of paying to open a unit to retrieve one box.
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do around the bases. Household goods stored while you are deployed and delivered when you return. Booking before you leave is far simpler than arranging it from a ship.
It depends on how the storage is written up. The BHGS Max 4 tariff says a shipment not held under its storage-in-transit item is placed in the mover's warehouse or a public warehouse, after which the mover's liability ceases and the warehouseman in possession becomes liable. Ask which arrangement your paperwork uses. With us, goods stay at our Miramar facility, the only place we store household goods, and the same company handles the move out, the storage and the move in.
Usually not, so do not plan the gap around it. California Civil Code section 1950.5 gives the landlord up to 21 calendar days after you vacate to send an itemized statement and return the remaining deposit, by personal delivery or first-class mail. Most gaps are shorter than that. Pay the new deposit, the movers and the storage from other funds, and give the old landlord a written forwarding address so the statement reaches you.
To the place you are sleeping during the gap, not to the storage facility. USPS offers a temporary change of address for relocations of 15 days up to 1 year, with a $1.25 identity verification fee for online requests. Forwarding may begin within 3 business days but USPS advises allowing up to 2 weeks, so file before move-out day. First-Class Mail and periodicals forward free; USPS Marketing Mail does not forward at all.
At our own facility at 8775 Miramar Pl, San Diego 92121, which is the only place we store household goods. The crew that loads you at the old address is from the same company that delivers to the new one, so there is one inventory from start to finish. There is no deposit to book, and the office answers from 8am–8pm daily if your move-in date shifts and the delivery needs rebooking.
