When To Book Movers

National 2026 guidance (ConsumerAffairs) says book four to eight weeks ahead for a local move, eight to twelve for long distance, and treat summer dates as gone two to three months out. That is sound advice for the market as a whole. Our own working windows run shorter, because we are a local carrier scheduling our own crews rather than brokering someone else’s: three to four weeks reliably holds a summer weekend or end-of-month date with us, and an off-peak, midweek date is usually bookable within days. Those are our operational numbers, not a market statistic, and booking with us costs nothing to lock: no deposit, no card, nothing before move day.

The dates that vanish first, in our experience, are the last weekend of any month and every Saturday from June through August. If your lease lets you pick, a Tuesday in the middle of the month is the same move at the calendar’s quietest point.

For a PCS move, the clock starts at your orders. The Army PCS moving guidance says “Advance planning and preparation is the number one key to a successful move” and to stop by the local transportation office “immediately after receiving orders.” The PCS moving FAQs tell members to schedule the shipment “as soon as you receive your PCS orders,” because dates go out “on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited availability of packing, pickup and shipping dates.” The cause DoD names for delays of up to four to six weeks in select areas is capacity every mover in the county shares: a “shortage of local packers, loaders, drivers, trucks, warehouses, wood containers and port/rail congestion.”

A government-arranged move starts as a week, then narrows. DoD’s 7-day scheduling window fact sheet counts a seven calendar day window back from the latest pickup date requested in the Defense Personal Property System: pick 20 April and the window runs 14 to 20 April. The assigned company may choose any day inside it, cannot pick up outside it, has three calendar days from accepting the shipment to confirm the date in writing, and cannot take a weekend or holiday without the member’s approval. A shipment arranged at the last minute becomes what DoD calls a short fuse shipment, scheduled on very short notice during peak season, and the seven-day window rule does not apply to it. Waiting gives up the rule that bounds the pickup date.

Availability narrows before price does. Reputable calendars fill first, and inside a month you are choosing among whoever still has the date, which is exactly when the wrong operators look attractive. Federal consumer guidance (FMCSA’s Protect Your Move) lists a demand for cash or a large deposit up front among the red flags of a moving scam, and a deposit demand is not something you have to accept from anyone. Our rate does not move with the date, it is published, and holding a date with us costs nothing, so the honest play is simple: book the date the moment you know it, and change it later if life changes, because nothing is on deposit either way.
