Plants sit at the intersection of two systems that don’t care about your monstera: agricultural law (states defend their farms from pests with real border inspections — California’s CDFA stations most famously) and trailer physics (days in a dark, unwatered, temperature-swinging box). Local moves dodge both; long-distance moves must respect both.

Our policy, plainly: local San Diego moves — plants welcome, loaded last and out first. Long-distance — plants travel with you, not in our trailer, for their own survival and the law’s.

Into California: CDFA border stations inspect; indoor plants in sterile mix generally pass, citrus and garden-soil plants face quarantine rules.
Leaving California: your destination’s rules apply — Arizona runs its own ports of entry; Vermont bans out-of-state untreated firewood; several states restrict soil outright.
The universal safe harbor: healthy, indoor-grown plants, repotted into fresh commercial mix a few weeks before the move, traveling in your climate-controlled vehicle.
The universal refusals: citrus across quarantine lines, plants in garden soil, anything visibly infested.

The Method

Moving Plants So They Arrive Alive

Repot risky plants into sterile mix 3–4 weeks out; prune and inspect for pests.
Water lightly the day before travel — moist, not soaked.
Box upright with padding; open tops for tall plants; never the trunk of a hot car overnight.
On multi-day drives: plants sleep indoors with you, like a well-behaved pet.
Winter routes (our Dakotas and Minnesota runs taught this): sub-zero cars kill plants as surely as trailers — plan around the cold or rehome beloved plants honestly.

Can movers transport my houseplants within California?+

For local San Diego moves, yes — plants ride fine on short hops, ideally as the last items loaded and first out. For long-distance moves, most movers (us included) can’t take plants in the trailer: days in the dark without water, plus state agricultural rules, end badly for the plant.

What happens at California’s border inspection stations?+

Incoming vehicles pass CDFA agricultural stations where plants and produce can be inspected. Healthy indoor houseplants in sterile potting mix are generally admitted; citrus and outdoor plants in garden soil face restrictions tied to pest quarantines. Coming from fire-ant or gypsy-moth states adds scrutiny.

How do I actually move plants cross-country?+

In your own vehicle: stable boxes, light and occasional water at stops, never a hot parked car for long. Check the destination state’s agriculture rules for restricted species, repot risky plants into fresh sterile mix weeks ahead, and accept that rehoming some plants with friends is sometimes the kindest routing.

Which plants cause the most trouble at state lines?+

Citrus (tightly restricted into and within quarantine zones), anything in outdoor garden soil, and firewood’s honorary cousin, recently outdoor-potted plants. Indoor-grown, pest-free plants in commercial mix sail through most checks.
