What A Move In
El Cajon Costs

3 movers at $169 an hour cash, 5 to 7 hours for a 3 bedroom single story house on a modest lot. That is $845 to $1183 in labor plus a flat $75 fuel fee, on our own ladder, which runs to $269 an hour cash for five movers.

The Arithmetic,
Done Out Loud

For a 3 bedroom single story house on a modest lot, plan on 3 movers at $169 an hour cash for 5 to 7 hours. That is $845 to $1183 in labor, plus the flat $75 fuel fee, with a three hour minimum of $507 if the job finishes early.

That is our own ladder, from $119 an hour cash for two movers up to $269 for five. We publish it, which most San Diego movers do not. There is no deposit at any point, and nothing is charged before move day.

Where those hours come from. Our published table for a 3 Bedroom is 5 to 7 hours. On the flat single story stock no access adjustment typically applies; the garden apartment and hillside stock further down this page price differently. That is the whole calculation, and you can check it against the San Diego cost guide.

What moves this number in El Cajon: Stair runs on the Fletcher Hills slopes, and lot-to-door carries in the garden apartment complexes; the flat single story stock is the fast case.

Why El Cajon
Is Its Own Number

Summer heat is the scheduling factor here more than access is. Early starts protect the crew and anything heat sensitive.

Our El Cajon movers page covers the access street by street, the full rate card is one page, and the instant estimate returns a crew size and an hourly rate in about 30 seconds.

The section above prices about half of El Cajon

The top of this page prices a single story house on a modest lot and states that no access adjustment applies. That is a real El Cajon move, but not the whole city. A large share of the housing here is low rise apartment, so pricing the city off the house half leaves the apartment half reading a number short by an hour or more.

There are three stocks here and they price differently. The valley floor tract house: single story ranch, attached garage, driveway, on the older grid off Main, Magnolia, Chase, Madison, Broadway and Naranca. The two story garden apartment with no elevator, which the section above leaves out entirely. And the hillside stock at the valley rim around Fletcher Hills, which the page already names. The rental stock is largely 1960s and 1970s low rise built without elevators, so most El Cajon apartment work is a walk up. Same rate card for all three, not the same hours.

What a second floor El Cajon apartment actually costs

Our estimator sets a 2 bedroom at 850 cubic feet and moves 3 movers at 220 cubic feet an hour, with half the volume handled at each end, so 425 cubic feet per end. Flat access with the truck at the curb scores an access factor of 1.0, and 425 divided by 220 is about 1.9 hours at that end.

Now the same 2 bedroom out of a garden complex. Park in the lot, cross the complex, then up an open exterior stair. Our estimator subtracts 0.15 for one flight up and 0.15 for a long carry, so that end scores 0.70. The crew moves 154 cubic feet an hour, and 425 divided by 154 is about 2.8 hours. Close to a full hour added at one end of one job.

In dollars, at $169 an hour cash for 3 movers. Flat at both ends is about 4 hours: 4 times $169 is $676 plus the flat $75 fuel fee, $751. Second floor apartment out and flat house in is about 5 hours: $845 plus $75, $920. Both ends a second floor walk up with lot parking scores 0.70 twice, about 5.5 hours of carrying, call it 6 with drive time: $1014 plus $75, $1,089. Same bedroom count, three different numbers.

The long carry there is not the stairs. It is where the truck can stand. The assigned space or carport sits away from the unit and a 26 foot truck does not fit under a carport bank, so the truck waits at the complex driveway or on the street. A ground floor unit in the same complex still takes that 0.15, so at 0.85 the crew runs at 187 cubic feet an hour and that end takes about 2.3 hours instead of 1.9.

The valley floor tract really is the fast half

The claim at the top of the page holds for the ranch stock, and it is worth making on purpose. Off Main, Magnolia, Chase, Madison, Broadway and Naranca the house sits on its own lot with a driveway and an attached garage, so the truck parks on the property or at the curb, the carry is short, and both ends score 1.0.

Work the 3 bedroom. Our estimator sets it at 1,400 cubic feet, so 700 per end. Two movers at 120 cubic feet an hour would need about 11.7 hours, which trips our escalation rule at 7 hours and adds a third mover. Three movers at 220 take about 3.2 hours per end, about 6.4 hours plus drive time. Call it 6.5 hours: 6.5 times $169 is $1,098.50, plus the $75 fuel fee, $1,173.50. At 1,400 cubic feet that is one truck and one fuel fee, and it sits inside the 5 to 7 hour band quoted above.

The valley rim adds hours the bedroom count does not show

Same 3 bedroom, same 1,400 cubic feet, on a lot up at the valley rim where the crew works a flight of stairs to the front door and the truck cannot get closer than the street. That end scores 1.0 less 0.15 for the flight and less 0.15 for the long carry, so 0.70. Three movers run at 154 cubic feet an hour, so the 700 cubic feet there takes about 4.5 hours instead of 3.2. With a flat unload at 3.2, that is about 7.7 hours. Call it 8: 8 times $169 is $1,352 plus $75, $1,427.

Three movers stay on it, since the escalation rule moves three to four at 9 hours. Same house size, same city, about $254 between the flat version and the rim version, and the whole difference is stairs and truck position.

Where a second truck enters an El Cajon job

Our estimator divides volume by 1,800 cubic feet and rounds up for the truck count. A 3 bedroom at 1,400 is one truck. A 4 bedroom at 2,000 is two, and a 5 bedroom at 2,650 is also two. Two trucks means a $150 second truck fee plus a second $75 fuel charge, so $150 in fuel rather than $75.

The 4 bedroom worked out: 1,000 cubic feet per end. Three movers at 220 would need about 9.1 hours, which trips the escalation rule at 9 hours and adds a fourth. Four movers at 275 take about 3.6 hours per end, about 7.3 hours plus drive. Call it 7.5 hours at $219: $1,642.50 in labor, plus $150 for the second truck, plus $150 in fuel across both, so $1,942.50. No deposit, and nothing charged before move day.

How we reach El Cajon, and what the mailing address does not tell you

El Cajon sits where Interstate 8 meets State Route 67. From our Miramar Pl yard the route is SR-52 east to SR-125 south to I-8 east, or I-805 south to I-8 east. We name the route rather than a distance, because we do not quote drive times.

An El Cajon mailing address is also not proof of an El Cajon city address. Crest, Winter Gardens, Rancho San Diego and parts of Bostonia and Granite Hills carry 92019 or 92021 El Cajon addresses while sitting in unincorporated county, and Bostonia and Granite Hills exist as names on either side of the line. None of that changes the rate card, the minimum, the fuel fee or the no deposit policy. It changes who you check with about where a truck can stand, because those rules follow the address rather than the city on your mail.

El Cajon Cost
Questions

How much does it cost to move in El Cajon?+
For a 3 bedroom single story house on a modest lot, budget 3 movers at $169 an hour cash for 5 to 7 hours, which is $845 to $1183 in labor plus a flat $75 fuel fee. The three hour minimum is $507. Those hours start from our published table for a 3 Bedroom, which is 5 to 7 hours, adjusted for local access. Our rate runs from $119 an hour cash for two movers up to $269 for five. We publish it; most San Diego movers do not.
What makes an El Cajon move take longer?+
Stair runs on the Fletcher Hills slopes, and lot-to-door carries in the garden apartment complexes; the flat single story stock is the fast case.
Is there a deposit?+
No. Not in El Cajon, not anywhere, and not on long distance either. Nothing is charged before move day and we do not take payment online.
What is included in the hourly rate?+
The truck, moving blankets, shrink wrap, dollies and straps, furniture disassembly and reassembly, floor and door protection, 25 free boxes, and released value coverage at 60 cents per pound. The $75 fuel fee is the only separate charge on a local move that fits one truck. A job big enough to need a second truck adds a $150 second truck fee and a second $75 fuel charge.
Why is the estimate for my El Cajon apartment higher than for a house with the same bedroom count?+
Access, and our own calculator prices it. A 2 bedroom is 850 cubic feet either way, and 3 movers move 220 cubic feet an hour, so 425 cubic feet at each end. At a house with a driveway both ends score 1.0 and each end takes about 1.9 hours, about 4 hours for the job: 4 times $169 is $676 plus the flat $75 fuel fee, $751. Out of a second floor El Cajon garden apartment, one flight up costs 0.15 and lot parking across the complex costs another 0.15, so that end scores 0.70 and takes about 2.8 hours. Call the job 5 hours: $845 plus $75, $920. The three hour minimum for 3 movers is $507, and there is no deposit either way.
Can a small El Cajon apartment move finish inside the three hour minimum?+
A studio can, if the access is flat. Our estimator sets a studio at 350 cubic feet, so 175 per end, and 2 movers move 120 cubic feet an hour, about 1.5 hours per end and about 2.9 hours total. That bills at the two mover three hour minimum of $357 plus the $75 fuel fee, $432. Put the same studio on the second floor of a garden complex with lot parking and that end scores 0.70, about 2.1 hours instead of 1.5, so roughly 3.5 hours: 3.5 times $119 is $416.50 plus $75, $491.50. A 1 bedroom at 450 cubic feet runs past the minimum either way, about 3.8 hours flat and about 4.6 hours out of a walk up.
My address says El Cajon but I am told I am not in the city. Does that change my price?+
No. Crest, Winter Gardens, Rancho San Diego and parts of Bostonia and Granite Hills carry 92019 or 92021 El Cajon addresses while sitting in unincorporated county. The hourly rate, the three hour minimum, the flat $75 fuel fee and the no deposit policy are the same on either side, and a job needing a second truck adds the $150 second truck fee and a second $75 fuel charge whichever side it is on. What is worth checking is where a truck can stand on your street on move day, since those rules follow the address rather than the mailing city.
