University City Movers

Towers and freight elevators to the north, post-war single story to the south, and they are not the same move.

What Does A Move
In University City Cost?

Two movers and a truck covers most of what University City actually is, and that is the cheapest rung on our ladder: $119 an hour cash, a three hour minimum of $357, and a flat $75 fuel fee. The ladder runs up to $269 an hour cash for five movers when a job needs them. No deposit, ever.

Around UTC and Nobel Drive the truck position and the carry distance move the number more than the size of the home does. The full rate card is one page, and the instant estimate returns a crew size and an hourly rate in about 30 seconds.

University City Homes
& Access

University City is really two places. North of Nobel the stock is mid and high rise condominium and apartment towers around UTC, with freight elevators, certificates of insurance and booked move windows. South of it the streets are older single story homes on flat lots with driveways. The address decides everything.

North UC is a building move

Towers around UTC run on reserved freight elevators, filed certificates of insurance and enforced move in hours. We arrange all of it with management before the truck leaves the yard.

South UC is a house move

Post-war single story on flat streets with driveways and garages. Short carries, straightforward positioning, and the garage as the main volume surprise.

UCSD sets the calendar

Term dates drive demand here far more than the season does. Late summer and the end of the academic year book out first.

La Jolla Village Drive and Nobel

Both corridors are busy through the day and worse around the mall. Truck positioning near UTC is planned, not improvised.

Structured parking with clearance limits

Underground garages here have real height limits. We check the clearance before sending a full height truck, because discovering it at the ramp is expensive.

Every University City address is different. Send us a photo of the street and the entrance and we will tell you what the access means for your crew size, your carry and your estimate.

Rose Canyon Splits This Community In Two

University City sits on a mesa that two canyons cut into. Rose Canyon is the one that decides how a moving truck gets around. Genesee Avenue is the only street that crosses that canyon and connects north University City to south University City. Everything else stops at the rim. Regents Road reads as continuous on plenty of maps and navigation apps, but it dead-ends at the canyon on both sides. The bridge that would have joined those two stubs was removed from the community plan by the San Diego City Council in 2016, so no truck crosses there and none is going to.

For dispatch that means one thing. A load going from a Governor Drive address up to a tower off La Jolla Village Drive travels over Genesee, or it goes out to a freeway and comes back in. If Genesee is tied up, the detour is I-5 on the west side or I-805 on the east, and the hourly clock is running the whole way around. This is why the first question we ask a University City caller is which side of the canyon the address is on, and we ask it before we quote a crew size rather than after.

How The Truck Reaches Your Door From Our Yard

Our yard is on Miramar Place, off the Miramar Road corridor east of I-805. Miramar Road runs west from there and becomes La Jolla Village Drive at the freeway, so that is the direct surface route into UTC and north University City. The crew does not get on the freeway to come straight back off it. For a south University City address on Governor Drive or the residential streets behind it, the route is I-805 south to the Governor Drive exit.

Genesee Avenue has its own I-5 interchange on the west side of the community, which is the entry we use for Genesee corridor addresses and anything on the hospital side. Regents Road has no freeway interchange of its own, so a Regents Road address is always reached off Governor Drive, Nobel Drive or La Jolla Village Drive. If your building or HOA has a preferred approach for delivery vehicles, tell us when you book and we will route the truck that way instead of leaving it to the driver at the curb.

Where The Grade Actually Is

People describe University City as flat, and for most of it that is fair. The mesa top is level, so interior residential streets in the south end give a dolly a clean run from the tailgate to the front door. The grade in this community is not spread out across the neighborhood. It is concentrated at the Rose Canyon and San Clemente Canyon rims and on the Genesee Avenue crossing between them.

That matters if your address is on a rim street. A driveway that pitches toward the canyon changes how we set the ramp and often means we park on the street and carry rather than back a loaded truck down a slope. Tell us at the walkthrough or send a photo of the driveway looking out from the garage. On the flat interior blocks the opposite is true and the truck usually parks close to the door, which is the single largest thing keeping an hourly job at $119 an hour cash for two movers from stretching.

One Jurisdiction, One Set Of Street Rules

University City is entirely inside the City of San Diego. There is no unincorporated County pocket anywhere in it, which is not true of every community we serve. From the Rose Canyon rim across to the Miramar side, City of San Diego street use, oversize vehicle and encroachment rules apply on every block.

The practical effect is that nobody has to work out which agency governs the curb in front of your building. It is one set of rules the whole way. What layers on top of that is private: building management rules, HOA rules and the move window a tower assigns you. Those are separate from city rules and we handle them separately, which is why a north University City job has two sets of paperwork behind it and a Governor Drive house usually has none.

Moving From One Side Of University City To The Other

A large share of the moves we run here never leave the community. A family sells the single story house in the south end and takes a condominium near UTC. A couple in a tower buys the house with the garage. Both of those jobs cross Rose Canyon on Genesee, which makes the trip between origin and destination a real line item on an hourly job rather than a rounding error.

We plan those two ways. If the tower end has an assigned elevator window, we load to fit that window and stage the rest, because a truck sitting in a loading zone with no elevator reservation left is paid time doing nothing. If both ends are flexible, we load once, cross once and unload once. Either way we want both addresses at booking, not just the one you are leaving, because on a University City to University City move the second address changes the crew count more often than the first one does.

When A University City Job Needs A Second Truck

Two situations here produce the second truck conversation. The first is a tower move with a fixed elevator window, where one truck cannot make two round trips inside the hours management assigned. The second is a south University City house where the garage has been absorbing overflow for twenty years and the volume is roughly double what the room count suggests.

The crew ladder is $119 an hour cash for two movers, $169 for three, $219 for four and $269 for five, with $50 an hour for each mover beyond that. The three hour minimums are $357, $507, $657 and $807 in that order. A second truck adds $150 plus a second $75 fuel charge. We would rather tell you that on the phone than have you find out at the curb, and there is no deposit either way. Nothing is due before the work starts.

Governor Drive Is The South End's Errand Street

UC Marketplace sits where Governor Drive meets Regents Road in south University City, anchored by a Sprouts Farmers Market and including a US Post Office branch. University Square Shopping Center is also on Governor Drive. For most of the south end, that stretch is where the move week errands happen.

Two of those errands are worth timing. The post office branch at Regents Road is where a lot of our south University City customers file the forwarding order, and doing it before the truck arrives rather than after is the difference between a clean handoff and a month of chasing mail. The other is boxes. We bring 25 free boxes on a booked job, so count what you have before you buy more. For the truck itself, Governor Drive turns are planned in advance so a 26 foot box makes one turn into the street rather than circling the block to retry it.

UTC Names A Mall And A Neighborhood, And That Costs People Time

Westfield UTC sits at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive and was originally University Towne Centre. Over the years the initials stopped meaning the shopping center alone and started meaning the whole north end of the community, so a resident says they live in UTC and means one of a dozen buildings that are not the mall.

When you book, give us the street address, the building name your management company uses and the unit. Those three together are what lets us call the right office, file the certificate of insurance with the right person and find the right dock. An address that says only UTC sends a crew to a retail loading area, and on an hourly job that wrong turn is billable time you did not need to spend.

The Genesee Corridor And Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla carries La Jolla in its name but stands on the Genesee Avenue corridor at the edge of University City. That mismatch trips people up constantly. Staff who live within walking reach of the campus book under the La Jolla page, then find out their access questions are University City questions: which side of Rose Canyon, which Genesee approach, whether the building has structured parking.

We move households for people on that corridor regularly and we plan around shift schedules rather than against them. If you are coming off nights, we can load in the afternoon instead of at eight in the morning. Ask when you call. The crew starts when you want it to start, and the rate does not change because of the hour.

Schools, And What They Mean For Your Move Date

University City is served by San Diego Unified School District. Schools in the community include University City High School, Standley Middle School, and Curie, Doyle and Spreckels Elementary Schools. Attendance areas go by address, so confirm yours with the district directly rather than assuming a move across Governor Drive or across the canyon keeps the same school.

For the move itself, the useful habit is to pack each child's room last and unload it first, and to label those boxes by name rather than by room. A child who has a bed, a lamp and their own things in place on night one recovers from a move faster than one whose boxes are stacked under the kitchen. We can also do the kid rooms as a partial pack the day before, which keeps move day shorter and the hourly clock lower.

What We Do Not Handle For University City Departures

This community turns over a lot of people who are leaving the country, not just the county, so we say this plainly. We do not do international moves. We do not do container or POD transport. We do not transport vehicles. If you are finishing a program or a posting and shipping a household overseas, we are not the company for that leg, and we will tell you on the first call instead of three weeks in.

What we do is the local hourly move and the long distance move by road. If the overseas piece is being handled by a freight forwarder and you need the household brought out of a University City apartment and delivered to their facility, that is ordinary work for us and we quote it like any other job.

Leaving University City For Good

Long distance out of here is one flat rate, agreed in writing before we load anything. Not an estimate that grows, not a per pound guess that lands after the truck is sealed. You see the number, you agree to it, and that is the number. There is no deposit on a long distance job any more than there is on a local one.

For timing, we cover 550 miles a day starting the day after we load. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day. Postdocs, residents and families leaving the Genesee corridor or the towers off Nobel are a steady part of this work, and the same access planning applies at the University City end: elevator window, certificate of insurance, truck position, all sorted before the day.

What Our Crews Plan For Here

Genesee Avenue is the only street crossing Rose Canyon between north and south University City. Regents Road dead-ends at the canyon on both sides and the planned bridge was removed from the community plan by the City Council in 2016.
If Genesee is blocked on move day, the detour between the two halves of University City is out to I-5 on the west or I-805 on the east and back in.
From our Miramar Place yard, Miramar Road runs west and becomes La Jolla Village Drive at I-805, the direct surface approach to UTC and north University City.
South University City addresses are reached by I-805 south to the Governor Drive exit.
Genesee Avenue has its own I-5 interchange on the west side. Regents Road has no freeway interchange, so those addresses come off Governor Drive, Nobel Drive or La Jolla Village Drive.
The whole community is inside the City of San Diego. City street use, oversize vehicle and encroachment rules apply everywhere in it. No County permits are involved.
Grade here sits at the Rose Canyon and San Clemente Canyon rims and on the Genesee canyon crossing. Interior mesa streets are level, so tell us if your driveway pitches toward a canyon.
UC Marketplace at Governor Drive and Regents Road has a Sprouts Farmers Market and a US Post Office branch, useful for filing mail forwarding before move day.
Westfield UTC is at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive. If your building is near it, give us the street address and the management company's building name, not just UTC.
Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla stands on the Genesee Avenue corridor at the edge of University City despite the name.

University City Moving
Questions

Is a UTC tower move different from a house move in University City?+
Completely, and it is why the address matters more than the neighborhood. North of Nobel means reserved freight elevators, a filed certificate of insurance and enforced move in hours. South of it means a driveway, a garage and a short carry.
Will you arrange the certificate of insurance with my building?+
Yes, and typically same business day once we have the building's requirements sheet. Send us the management contact when you book and it is handled before the truck leaves the yard.
Can a full height truck use my UTC parking structure?+
Often not. Underground garages here have real clearance limits and discovering one at the ramp is expensive. We check the height before dispatch and stage a smaller vehicle where the structure will not take a box truck.
When is University City busiest for moving?+
Term dates drive demand here far more than the season does. Late summer and the end of the academic year book out first, so give yourself three weeks on those.
Can your truck drive straight from north University City to south University City?+
Only on Genesee Avenue. It is the one street that crosses Rose Canyon and links the two halves of the community. Regents Road looks like a through street on maps but it dead-ends at the canyon on both sides, and the bridge that would have connected them was removed from the community plan by the San Diego City Council in 2016.
What happens if Genesee Avenue is blocked on my move day?+
The truck goes out to a freeway and comes back in, either I-5 on the west side or I-805 on the east. There is no shortcut across the canyon. On an hourly job that detour is billable time, so we watch the Genesee crossing on any move that has one address on each side of Rose Canyon.
Do I need a County permit to stage a truck on my University City street?+
No. University City is entirely inside the City of San Diego with no unincorporated County pocket in it, so City of San Diego street use, oversize vehicle and encroachment rules apply on every block. Building and HOA rules are separate and private, and we handle those with your management office.
Is Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla actually in La Jolla?+
It stands on the Genesee Avenue corridor at the edge of University City, which is why staff who live near it often book under the wrong page. If your address is on that corridor, the access questions are University City questions: which side of Rose Canyon you are on and which Genesee approach the truck should use.
My lease says La Jolla Village Drive but everyone calls it UTC. What do you need?+
The street address, the building name your management company uses and the unit number. Westfield UTC itself is at 4545 La Jolla Village Drive and was originally University Towne Centre, and the initials now get used for the whole north end. An address that says only UTC can send a crew toward a retail loading area.
Which schools serve University City?+
San Diego Unified School District. Schools in the community include University City High School, Standley Middle School, and Curie, Doyle and Spreckels Elementary Schools. Attendance areas are assigned by address, so confirm yours with the district instead of assuming that a move within University City keeps the same school.
Is University City hilly enough to slow a dolly down?+
Mostly no. It is a mesa top, so interior residential streets are level and a loaded dolly runs clean from the tailgate to the door. The grade is concentrated at the Rose Canyon and San Clemente Canyon rims and on the Genesee crossing, so a rim street driveway that pitches toward the canyon is the case where we park on the street and carry.
I am finishing at UCSD and shipping my things overseas. Can you handle that?+
Not the overseas leg. We do not do international moves, container or POD transport, or vehicle transport, and we say so on the first call rather than later. If a freight forwarder is handling the shipping, we can bring the household out of your University City apartment and deliver it to their facility, and that is ordinary hourly work for us.
