Old Town is where San Diego started, and the street pattern still reflects that. Blocks are small, streets are narrow, the historic park draws steady traffic through the middle of the day, and the residential stock around the edges is older and compact.
Narrow historic streets
Small blocks and tight streets mean a full size truck is frequently the wrong vehicle. We scout the position and stage a smaller one for the last stretch where the block will not take it.
Tourist traffic through the middle of the day
The park and the commercial strip draw visitors from late morning. An early start is not a preference here, it is the plan.
Compact older housing

Inside The Historic Park, The Move Is A Hand Carry
The core of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is a pedestrian zone. There is no pulling a truck up to the door of a business inside it. Whatever is coming out comes out on hand trucks and on shoulders, from the building to the perimeter where a truck can legally stand. Access has to be arranged with park staff in advance, and that conversation happens before a date goes on the calendar rather than on the morning of the job.
The pricing consequence is simple, because our rate is time based. Two movers are $119 an hour cash and three are $169, so a long carry is paid for in minutes rather than in a surcharge. On a job inside the park the third mover often pays for itself, since every pair of hands walks the same distance and adding one splits the load instead of repeating the trip. Tell us on the phone that the address sits inside the park boundary and we will size the crew for the walk, not for the room count.
Getting A Loaded Truck To The Edge Of Old Town
Old Town sits at the Interstate 5 and Interstate 8 interchange, at the mouth of Mission Valley. For a full size truck the working approaches are Taylor Street, Old Town Avenue and Pacific Highway. Which one we use depends on where the address sits relative to the trolley tracks and the freeway ramps, and we settle that before the day rather than on the day.
The part people underestimate is the exit. A street that a truck can get into is not automatically a street a truck can get back out of, and a driver who has to reverse a loaded box out of a short block has lost half an hour that nobody budgeted. So we route the approach and the departure as one plan. If the job needs a second vehicle to bridge the last stretch, that is $150 plus a second $75 fuel charge, and you hear that number before the date, not after.
Harney Street And The Weekend Market
A weekend street market operates on Harney Street and closes that block while it is running. Schedules for a market like that move with the season, so if your address is on Harney and you want a Saturday or a Sunday, the first thing we do is confirm the current schedule instead of trusting last year's hours. A customer who plans around a set-up time we guessed at, and then finds the street already blocked, has been let down by us and not by the market.
There are two ways to work with it. Finish and be clear of the block before the market sets up, or work from a different frontage if the building has one, a rear entry or a door on the cross street. Both cost time. A weekday move on Harney avoids the question completely, and if the lease dates give you that option it is the cheaper booking.
Flat Ground At The Foot Of Presidio Hill
Old Town itself is flat, sitting at the foot of Presidio Hill. That is the one piece of the local geography working in your favor. Dolly runs across level ground are quick, and a long carry on the flat costs far less time than a short carry on a slope, which is why a distance that sounds bad on the phone frequently is not.
Everything east and south of the flat climbs. The roads up into Presidio Park and toward Mission Hills are narrow and they wind, and they are not truck roads. If your address is up there rather than down on the flat, the job stops being an Old Town job in practice. The truck stands where it fits and the crew works a shuttle or a longer carry from there, and we would rather tell you that on the estimate call than discover it with a loaded truck at the bottom of a hill.
Curb Space Here Belongs To Visitors, Not Residents
Old Town has a City of San Diego Community Parking District. That is a metered parking and revenue district, not a residential permit district. There is no resident sticker here of the kind Hillcrest has, so there is nothing you can hang on a mirror or hand to a driver that reserves the frontage outside your building.
In practice the curb in front of the address competes with visitor parking all day, every day, and that includes the day we arrive. What actually helps is unglamorous: a neighbor willing to hold two spaces, a driveway or rear alley if the building has one, and a straight answer on the walkthrough about where a truck realistically fits. We would rather plan the carry from a spot that will be free than from the spot you wish were free.
Historic Buildings And What The Crew Will Not Do
Old Town is governed by its own planned district ordinance with a community design review board, and the district contains numerous designated historic structures. Be clear on what that does and does not mean for you. Design review governs development and exterior alterations to buildings. It does not regulate a moving crew, and you do not file anything with anyone in order to move in or out.
What it does change is how the crew treats the building. Nothing gets anchored into a wall for any reason. No ramp gets leaned against a facade to bridge a step. Door frames and thresholds are protected before the first piece goes through the opening, not after somebody clips one. And if a piece will not clear the opening, it comes apart and goes through in sections. Nothing gets forced through a historic door frame to save fifteen minutes.
City Of San Diego, Not The County
An Old Town address is City of San Diego. Not unincorporated county, and unlike Clairemont, Serra Mesa or the East County suburbs there is no later annexation date to look up. Old Town is the original pueblo that the city was incorporated around in 1850. It predates every neighborhood the city later took in.
A moving company mentions this for one practical reason: it tells you which counter you are dealing with. Permits, building questions and city services for an Old Town address run through the City of San Diego. If you are arriving from an unincorporated county address, the offices you dealt with at the old place are not the offices you deal with at the new one, and that trips people up on the address change more often than the move itself does.
A Residential Pocket Wrapped Around A Tourist District
Old Town is a small residential pocket wrapped around a tourist district. The housing is a mix of single family homes, duplexes, apartments and condominiums, and it is not a bedroom community. The people filling the sidewalks on a given afternoon are largely not the people who live behind them.
That composition changes what a move here looks like compared with a neighborhood of similar size elsewhere in the city. There is less house to house work inside the neighborhood and more traffic in and out of it, more one and two bedroom loads, and a steady share of small commercial jobs mixed in with the residential ones. When somebody moves within Old Town it is usually between rentals rather than up the ladder from a first house to a second one.
Moving A Business In The District
Retail and restaurant space in the district turns over, and those jobs have their own shape. If the space sits inside the pedestrian core, everything above applies: a hand carry to the perimeter, coordination with park staff ahead of the date, and a crew sized for walking distance rather than for volume. If it fronts a street outside the park boundary, a truck can usually get close, but the frontage is shared with visitor parking and with neighboring businesses that stay open while we work.
So we plan a commercial move here around your trading hours and your neighbors', and where a building has a service entry or a rear alley we use it and leave the public frontage alone. Fixtures, shelving, back bar and display cases come apart and get blanket wrapped, and anything that will not survive being carried by hand gets crated rather than gambled on.
Which Way We Drive Out Of Old Town
The neighborhood does not have a mall inside it. The nearest large enclosed malls are Fashion Valley and Mission Valley mall, both east of Old Town along the Interstate 8 corridor. Going the other direction, the Midway and Sports Arena Boulevard corridor and Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station serve the same catchment, reached on Rosecrans or Sports Arena Boulevard heading west.
On a move day those are the two directions that matter. Interstate 8 east for anything in Mission Valley, Rosecrans or Sports Arena Boulevard west for Midway and Liberty Station. If your move has a second stop, a furniture pickup, a storage run or a donation drop, tell us which side of Old Town it sits on when you book. We would rather sequence the whole day in one direction than send a loaded truck back through the interchange twice.
Leaving Old Town For Another State
Long distance out of Old Town is one flat rate, agreed in writing before we load. There is no deposit and no online payment, here or anywhere else we work. What is different about an Old Town origin is that the access has to be inside that flat number before you sign it. If the load is coming out on a hand carry from a pedestrian block, or shuttling to a truck standing on Taylor Street, that is walkthrough work, and it is the kind of thing a company that quotes over the phone without asking discovers on loading day and then wants to renegotiate.
Once the truck is loaded we cover 550 miles a day, counting from the day after we load. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day. We do not handle international shipments, containers or PODs, or vehicle transport, so if your Old Town move involves any of those, you want a second company for that piece and it is better to know now.
