Mid century beach cottages sit close together on narrow tree lined streets west of the 101, parking along Neptune and the highway is contested year round, and a number of the rear alleys are still dirt. The canopy matters as much as the pavement here, because a full height truck and a low eucalyptus limb do not negotiate.

Dirt alleys behind the cottages

Some rear lanes in Leucadia are still unpaved, which can make the alley either the best access on the block or completely unusable depending on the season and the state of the surface. We look at the ground before we commit a loaded truck to it, and when it is soft we take the longer front carry instead. Recovering a stuck truck is a far worse day than a longer carry ever was.

The 101 and the rail corridor

Highway 101 is Leucadia's spine and it moves slowly through the day, with beach traffic layered over local errands. Behind it the rail line limits east west movement to a handful of crossings, so which side of the tracks you live on shapes the whole route. We plan around the crossings from the address rather than discovering them with a full load and a schedule already running.

Cottage scale interiors

The older stock brings narrow doorways, tight interior turns, porch steps and the occasional loft reached by stairs that were generous in 1955. Large furniture regularly comes apart to leave a Leucadia cottage, and we treat disassembly as part of the job rather than a surprise, bringing the tools and blankets to do it properly.

Bluff side streets off Neptune

The streets running toward the bluff are short, narrow and often without turning room at the end. A truck that noses in needs a plan to get out, so we frequently stand on the through street and carry the last stretch. Leucadia Is Part Of The City Of Encinitas

Leucadia is not its own city and it is not unincorporated County. It is one of the five communities that became the City of Encinitas when Encinitas incorporated in 1986, alongside Old Encinitas, New Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea and Olivenhain. The mailing address says Encinitas, the neighborhood sign says Leucadia, and both are right.

That is not trivia on move day. Permits, parking enforcement and the rules governing your block come from the City of Encinitas. Not the County, and not the City of San Diego. We take calls that open with the assumption that a Leucadia address falls under County rules, usually because the streets feel older and looser than the inland grid, and it is the wrong assumption. When a question about holding the curb or working near a driveway comes up, Encinitas is who it goes to, and we would rather establish that at booking than with a truck already sitting on Vulcan Avenue.

The Street Names Come Out Of Mythology, And Several Sound Alike

Leucadia's streets are named out of classical mythology, which is why the neighborhood has Neptune, Hygeia, Vulcan, Glaucus, Eolus, Hermes, Phoebe, Daphne, Jason, Orpheus and Athena.

Not all of those survive a phone call intact. Eolus and Hermes blur together when someone says them quickly. Hygeia gets written down three or four different ways by people who have never seen it spelled. Glaucus and Daphne get guessed at. So we confirm the exact street spelling before dispatch rather than on move day, and the person who books you reads it back letter by letter.

The reason we are fussy about it is that you are paying by the hour. A crew parked on Phoebe when the job is on Daphne is not a funny story, it is time on the clock, and on these blocks there is rarely anywhere convenient to turn a box truck around once it has committed to the wrong street.

The Canopy Over Coast Highway 101 Does Not Get Trimmed Back

Mature eucalyptus line the N Coast Hwy 101 corridor through Leucadia and the canopy hangs low over the roadway. The trees are protected locally and they are not trimmed back for convenience. That last part is the piece people miss: the clearance you have on the 101 this year is the clearance you will have next year. It is a fixed condition of the corridor, not a maintenance backlog that someone is eventually going to clear.

For a 26 foot box truck it means overhead clearance on the 101 is something the driver watches instead of assumes, and where the canopy is tight we take the inland approach rather than running the highway the length of the corridor. That costs a few extra turns. It does not cost a roof vent, a marker light, or a conversation with a neighbor about a branch that came down on their car.

How The Truck Actually Gets To Your Door

Our yard is at 8775 Miramar Pl in San Diego, so a Leucadia job starts with I-5 northbound. We come off at the Encinitas Boulevard interchange and work up to the address on the inland streets, using Vulcan Avenue rather than joining Coast Highway 101 early and riding it under the trees.

We do not put a drive time on that in writing, because a stated drive time up the coast is a guess wearing a number's clothes and you would plan around it. What we do instead is name the route in the crew brief, so the driver is not making the decision about whether to take the 101 for the first time at the on ramp with you standing in your driveway waiting.

Leucadia Children Are In Two Different School Districts

A family relocating into Leucadia is dealing with two districts, not one. Encinitas Union School District covers kindergarten through sixth grade and runs nine elementary schools: Capri, El Camino Creek, Flora Vista, La Costa Heights, Mission Estancia, Ocean Knoll, Olivenhain Pioneer, Park Dale Lane and Paul Ecke Central. San Dieguito Union High School District picks up grades seven through twelve.

That split blindsides people arriving from a single unified district. It means two enrollment processes, two sets of forms and two school calendars to reconcile against a move date. A household with a fifth grader and an eighth grader is working both districts at the same time, in the same month they are packing.

San Dieguito runs both attendance-area schools and schools of choice, and which campus a Leucadia student attends is not predictable from the address. Confirm the assignment with the district rather than assuming it from the street. Confident wrong answers about this circulate through listing copy, sellers and neighbors, and August is a bad month to find out.

Paul Ecke Central, Capri, And Why That Name Is On The Building

Paul Ecke Central Elementary is in Leucadia at 185 Union Street, at Vulcan and Union. Capri Elementary on Capri Road is the other Encinitas Union elementary serving the Leucadia area.

The name on the first one is not decoration. Encinitas built its identity on cut flowers and poinsettias, and the Ecke family's poinsettia operation is the reason that trade is part of how this stretch of coast understands itself. The school carries the family name.

For us the Vulcan and Union block is one we schedule around. A 26 foot truck standing across from an elementary during arrival or dismissal is a poor neighbor and a slow load, with parents doubled up at the curb and a crossing guard working the corner. If your address is on or near that block we set the start time to miss both windows, which in practice means starting before the first bell.

There Is No Lake And No River In Leucadia

Leucadia has no lake and no river. Its water features are two coastal lagoons, Batiquitos to the north and San Elijo to the south, plus the Pacific.

Where this actually shows up is paperwork rather than loading. Disclosure and insurance forms that ask about lake or river frontage get a plain no for a Leucadia address, and the accurate answer to what is nearby is lagoon and ocean.

The Hospital For A Leucadia Address

The hospital for Leucadia is Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas at 354 Santa Fe Drive, with a 24 hour emergency room. From Leucadia the route is south on Coast Highway 101 or Vulcan Avenue to Santa Fe Drive, or I-5 to the Encinitas Boulevard interchange.

That goes in the crew brief on every Leucadia job before the truck leaves the yard. A move involves stairs, dollies, glass and porch steps, and in a cottage with a loft the stairs are the part that deserves respect. On a senior move there is frequently someone in the house whose day is already harder than ours. Knowing the hospital and the route in advance costs nothing.
