Best Time of Year to Move in San Diego
San Diego has great weather year-round, but timing your move can still save you money, reduce stress, and make booking much easier. Here's what moving experience since 1997 tells us about timing.
One of the most common questions we get at Discount Movers is: "When is the best time to move in San Diego?" The good news is that San Diego's climate is so mild that there's no truly bad time to move weather-wise. The more important factors are demand, availability, and how much notice you can give. Here's everything you need to know.
Best vs. Worst Times to Move in San Diego
Best Times
Mid-week (Tue-Thu), middle of the month (8th-22nd), October through April. Easier to book, more mover availability, and sometimes lower demand overall.
Busiest Times
Weekends, first and last 3 days of any month, June through August. Hardest to book, least mover availability, most likely to require 3+ weeks notice.
Best Months
October, November, January, February, March. Lower demand, easier scheduling, and San Diego's weather stays comfortable and dry during most of this period.
Busiest Months
June, July, August. Peak moving season nationally and locally. Military PCS moves, student moves, and lease cycles all converge in summer.

Best Day of the Week to Move
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are consistently the easiest days to book a San Diego mover. Weekends (especially Saturdays) are the most in-demand by far. Friday is busier than mid-week but easier than Saturday. Sunday is moderately busy.
If your schedule allows any flexibility at all, a mid-week move is the smartest play. You'll have your pick of time slots, the crew won't be coming off a back-to-back weekend, and there's often less traffic in San Diego on weekdays than on moving-heavy Saturdays.
Best Time of Month to Move
The first and last few days of any month are always the busiest. Most residential leases end on the last day of the month and begin on the first, creating a massive surge in demand on the 28th-31st and the 1st-3rd. If your lease allows any flexibility, moving on the 10th-20th of the month gives you the most options and the least competition for mover availability.
Best Time of Day to Start Your Move
For San Diego local moves, an 8:00 or 9:00 AM start is ideal. Here's why: you avoid the worst of midday heat in summer, you have the full day ahead of you if the move takes longer than expected, and traffic in San Diego is typically lighter in the morning than in the afternoon. Starting at noon or later puts you in afternoon traffic and can push the move into evening, especially for larger homes.
In summer months, an early start is especially valuable. San Diego summer heat peaks in the afternoon, and moving heavy furniture in 90-degree weather is no fun for anyone. An 8 AM start means the bulk of the loading is done before it gets warm.
Does San Diego Weather Affect Moving?
Honestly, less than almost any other major city. San Diego averages 266 sunny days per year and has no real winter in the traditional sense. That said, a few weather considerations are worth knowing:
- June Gloom: May and June bring overcast mornings along the coast. Temperatures are mild and there's no rain, but it can feel gray. By afternoon it usually clears. Not a moving concern.
- Santa Ana Winds: Typically October through December and occasionally in spring. Hot, dry, and gusty. Not a serious moving hazard but worth noting for moves involving large items or open truck doors.
- Rain: San Diego averages only about 11 inches of rain per year, most of it falling November through March. Rain events are usually brief. If rain is forecast on your move day, we wrap and protect everything, it's rarely a reason to reschedule.
- Summer heat: Inland San Diego (El Cajon, Santee, Escondido) can hit 95-105°F in July and August. Coastal areas stay much cooler. Start early if you're moving inland in summer.

- Peak season (June-August), weekends: 3-4 weeks minimum
- Peak season, mid-week: 1-2 weeks
- Off-peak season, weekends: 1-2 weeks
- Off-peak season, mid-week: 3-7 days usually sufficient
