What is it Like to Live in Coronado?

Regardless if you are walking on the Coronado Bay path, the ocean beach walk, you are strolling in one of the many parks like Spreckles or Tidelands, and/or you are dining at one of the fabulous restaurants that are on every corner, you will notice that people in Coronado are very friendly and usually have a big smile on their face. Coronado California is a wonderful community to live, work or play in. Coronado is located across from the beautiful downtown Gaslamp area of San Diego and is surrounded by the bay and the ocean on all sides. The Coronado recreation center is located on the bay of Coronado and is one of the most beautiful community centers you can ever imagine. There is a pool for small children with a waterfall feature and a lap pool for adults. Full-size basketball, volleyball, classes for kids, camps and even a community theater reside at the center. If you are moving to Coronado, the recreation center is a wonderful place to go for everyone with both senior and children programs. Coronado Library
The Coronado library is a great place to read, check out books, or enjoy community activities and lectures. The library structure is gorgeous, is open much longer than most libraries in San Diego, and has interesting programs for small kids including story time on Tuesdays and Fridays. Coronado Schools
The Coronado school district includes two elementary schools, a middle school and award-winning high school; all of which have the highest ranking for being one of the best school districts in San Diego. There is also a Fine Arts school, a football field that would amaze anyone and an Olympic pool where students have actually gone on to the Olympics from.

Coronado Concerts in the Park
There is a huge community feeling in Coronado and this is most evident at the concerts in the park held all summer in Coronado. Families bring food and drink and enjoy great music while the kids dance and run around.

Take a Ferry in Coronado and Have Dinner Downtown San Diego

The Coronado water ferry has a ferry that goes from Coronado to downtown San Diego. You can have dinner in Gaslamp, walk or bike on the waterfront, or even go see a baseball game at Petco field. You can also call 619-235-TAXI and have a water taxi pick you up anywhere in Coronado and drop you off anywhere downtown. Hotel del Coronado

Coronado is home to the famous Hotel del Coronado, built in 1888 and long considered one of the world’s top resorts. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark and has hosted many notable guests, including the American presidents George H. W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and William Howard Taft, as well as Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Thomas Edison, Magic Johnson, Charles Lindbergh, Willie Mays, and Babe Ruth.

Famous actresses Mary Pickford and Marilyn Monroe also stayed there.

“The Del” has appeared in numerous works of popular culture and was supposedly the inspiration for the Emerald City in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. However, other sources say Oz was inspired by the “White City” of the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Author L. Frank Baum would have been able to see the hotel from his front porch overlooking Star Park. Baum designed the crown chandeliers in the hotel’s dining room. Because of the reported association with Oz, Coronado is often associated with the color green and is sometimes referred to as “The Emerald City”. The colors of Coronado High are green and white; the Coronado city flag is a tricolor of green-white-green with a crown in the middle; and a local surf/skate shop is named Emerald City. The hotel is said to be haunted, with room 3372 being visited by the ghost of Kate Morgan.

Once owned locally, the Hotel Del is now owned by the Blackstone Group (60%), Strategic Hotels & Resorts Inc. (34.5%), and KSL Resorts (5.5%). When Strategic Hotels & Resorts Inc. bought its stake in 2006, the hotel was valued at $745 million; currently, the hotel is valued at roughly $590 million.
