THE 332-MILE RUN UP I-15 TO LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas is a straight run up I-15: about 332 miles, delivered day 2. It is a short enough haul that same-week and even last-minute Vegas moves are routine rather than rush jobs. Reno is the different animal: about 558 miles up US-395 along the Eastern Sierra, a genuine day’s drive with fuel planning.

The corridor itself is heavily traveled: no state income tax, casino and hospitality work, warehouse and logistics jobs around North Las Vegas, and Nellis AFB families. Summer heat is the one packing consideration. The I-15 desert crossing regularly exceeds 110°F, so the same carry-it-yourself advice applies to candles, cosmetics, and anything with a battery you care about. Cajon Pass and the I-15 corridor can jam on Friday afternoons both directions; midweek moves run noticeably smoother.

The Henderson File

HENDERSON IS ITS OWN CITY, NOT A LAS VEGAS SUBURB

Henderson has its own story, and it starts with a factory. The city grew out of the townsite built for the Basic Magnesium plant, which produced magnesium for World War II munitions and aircraft, and it incorporated as a city in 1953. It also wrote the template for how Southern Nevada builds neighborhoods. Green Valley, begun in the late 1970s, is widely credited as Southern Nevada's first master-planned community, predating Summerlin. Newer Henderson master plans like Inspirada and Cadence follow the same model.

That history is the practical reality of a Henderson delivery. So much of the housing sits inside master-planned, association-governed neighborhoods that gate access codes, rules about where a truck can stage, and sometimes advance notice to the association are completely normal, so ask your HOA before delivery day. Questions about the public street itself go through the city. Henderson sits about 336 miles from San Diego, a little farther out than Las Vegas proper, and takes a day 2 delivery date just as Las Vegas does. Reno Block by Block

OLD SOUTHWEST, MIDTOWN, AND THE CAMPUS RENTAL CYCLE

Reno's older core rewards a little planning. The Old Southwest, anchored by the Newlands Historic District on the bluff above the Truckee River, holds early twentieth century homes, Craftsman bungalows and period revival cottages on mature tree-lined streets. Midtown sits between downtown and the Old Southwest and is the city's walkable restaurant and shop corridor. That means deliveries there often work with older, narrower streets rather than wide suburban curb space. None of that is a problem; it is simply worth telling us at the estimate so the crew arrives ready for the block, not just the address.

Two more Reno specifics. The University of Nevada, Reno traces to a land-grant school opened in Elko in 1874 that moved to Reno in 1885. Its academic calendar still shapes the rental cycle in the neighborhoods around campus. Confirm your lease turnover date before you pick a delivery date. If your building requires reserved curb space, Reno Municipal Code chapter 6.11 requires an encroachment permit to occupy the public right-of-way for temporary placements. The City of Reno Public Works department administers it. The part worth knowing is that Reno issues that permit only to a licensed, bonded and insured contractor or that contractor’s authorized agent. A resident cannot simply pull one over the counter. Raise it with your building or property manager and with us at the estimate.

Pass by Pass

TWO SUMMITS STAND BETWEEN SAN DIEGO AND NEVADA

On the Las Vegas and Henderson run, the last climb before Nevada is Mountain Pass. It is the high point of the I-15 drive in California at about 4,730 feet just short of the state line. From there the freeway drops past dry Ivanpah Lake and crosses into Nevada at Primm. It is a real grade, and our drivers plan for it, but it is the tame one of the two.

The Reno run is a different road entirely, and it does not go through Las Vegas. It follows I-15 over Cajon Pass to US-395, then north along the Eastern Sierra through the Owens Valley towns of Lone Pine and Bishop, past the Mammoth Lakes turnoff, over Conway Summit at 8,143 feet, the highest point on US-395, and down through the Carson Valley into Reno. US-395 is a genuine mountain-flank highway running the seam between the Sierra crest and the desert ranges, and its high stretches near Mammoth and Conway Summit sit above 8,000 feet. Between late fall and spring, winter chain controls are a real possibility, and we plan the trip around them.

The Day 3 Arithmetic

WHY RENO IS A DAY 3 DATE, ON PAPER BEFORE WE LOAD

Reno sits in the Truckee Meadows at about 4,500 feet, a valley it shares with the adjacent city of Sparks. It is bounded by the Carson Range of the Sierra on the west and desert ranges on the east. For a truck, that geography has one happy consequence: a Reno delivery and a Sparks delivery are the same trip, same route, same date.

The date itself is simple arithmetic, not a guess. We cover 550 miles a day starting the day after loading, and Reno is about 558 miles out. The first road day covers nearly the whole distance, and the truck finishes the last stretch into the Truckee Meadows the following morning. That is why Reno is a day 3 delivery date, written into the same flat-rate agreement you sign before we load, with no deposit on either end.

Snow Line, Dry Air

MOUNT ROSE WEATHER AND THE RENO WINTER INDOORS

Tahoe-side addresses near Reno, such as Incline Village, are reached over the Mount Rose Highway, which crosses a pass near 8,900 feet. That number explains a scene that surprises people from San Diego: it can be snowing hard at the summit and on Tahoe-side driveways while Reno itself sits dry. Winter deliveries up there are planned around the weather, not forced through it, and the date we agree on reflects that.

Down in town, the weather works on your furniture instead of the road. Reno is a true four-season high desert at about 4,500 feet. It has hot dry summers, cold winters with real snow in town some years, and winter heating that dries interiors even further. So the wood-shrinkage effect continues indoors all winter. Expect solid wood pieces to keep adjusting through their first Reno winter, long after the boxes are empty.

After the Truck Leaves

THE NEVADA PAPERWORK WORTH YOUR FIRST WEEK

The reason so many of our customers make this move is written into the state's founding document: Nevada has no tax on wages or personal income, and that is not just policy. Voters wrote the prohibition into the Nevada Constitution, so it cannot be changed by the legislature alone. Two smaller items deserve your first week. New residents handle driver licenses and vehicle registration through the Nevada DMV, and the deadline is 30 days from establishing residency for both, so make dmv.nv.gov an early stop after you arrive rather than a later one. And Nevada limits vehicle emissions inspections to vehicles based in the urban areas of Clark County, meaning the Las Vegas valley including Henderson, and Washoe County, meaning Reno and Sparks, with rural addresses in those counties and all other Nevada counties exempt. The part that matters coming from California is that a newer vehicle’s first three registrations are exempt; whether that covers your car depends on the vehicle and your address, so check dmv.nv.gov before you plan the errand.

One credential note specific to this route. The Nevada Transportation Authority licenses movers for moves that start and end inside Nevada. A San Diego to Nevada move crosses a state line and runs under federal interstate authority, so the credential to verify on our trucks is US DOT #4372335. We are the carrier that loads, drives, and delivers, and we never take a deposit.

How The Flat Rate Gets Set

Before we quote a Nevada move we look at the load, in person or over video, including what should ride in your car across the summer I-15 desert. The result is one flat rate for the entire job, Las Vegas on day 2 or Reno on day 3, agreed in writing before we load. Nothing is paid up front, because we take no deposit.

Cajon Pass and I-15 can jam on Friday afternoons in both directions, so a midweek Las Vegas date runs noticeably smoother, and Henderson delivers on day 2 alongside Las Vegas.

What The Truck Cannot Legally Carry

No household goods carrier may load hazardous materials, and the list is longer than most people expect. Propane tanks, including the one on the barbecue. Gasoline and the fuel in a mower or a generator. Aerosols, paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fertilizer, charcoal lighter, nail polish remover, and ammunition. Car batteries. Anything under pressure or anything that burns.

This is not a preference we could be talked out of. It is the rule that lets the truck cross state lines at all, and one leaking container can damage an entire load. Drain the fuel, use up or give away what you can in the two weeks before, and tell us about anything you are unsure of rather than quietly packing it. We would far rather answer the question than find it.

Why The Delivery Is A Date And Not A Window

Ask any long-distance mover for the delivery date and listen to whether you get a date or a window. A two week window usually means the load has not been placed with a driver yet, and the company quoting you does not know who will actually be driving.

Ours is arithmetic. We cover about 550 miles a day, counted from the day AFTER we load, because load day is a working day rather than a driving one. That gives a date, and it is the date on the paperwork. Anything within 200 miles, which includes Los Angeles, is delivered the same day we load.

Plants, Pets And The Things That Travel Separately

Houseplants are the one that surprises people. They do not do well in a dark truck for several days, and moving them across a state line can run into agricultural rules at the far end. Pets never travel on the truck, and no reputable carrier will suggest otherwise. Plan their journey as its own trip with its own timing, and remember that the animal arrives into an empty house that smells wrong. Their bed and bowl belong in the car rather than in a carton.
