A studio or 1-bedroom apartment is a job for 2 movers at $119 per hour cash, or $129 per hour by card, typically finished in 3 to 4 hours. A 2-bedroom home is usually a 3-mover job of 4 to 5 hours. A 3-bedroom home almost always benefits from 3 movers at $169 per hour cash, and a 4-bedroom or larger home should have 4 movers at $219 per hour cash or a 5-person crew at $269 per hour cash.

Why More Movers Often Costs Less

This surprises people: a bigger crew at a higher hourly rate frequently produces a smaller total bill. Three movers at $169 per hour cash who finish in 4 hours cost $676. Two movers at $119 per hour cash who need 7 hours for the same job cost $833. The bigger crew saved $157 and three hours of your day. Speed matters more than rate.

Stairs Change the Math

Stairs are the single biggest factor people underestimate. A third-floor walkup apartment can add hours to a 2-person move. If either your current or new home has more than one flight of stairs and no elevator, add a mover to your crew. Carrying a couch up three flights is exactly the kind of work where an extra set of hands pays for itself.

Other Factors That Add Crew

Where the Bigger Crew Stops Being Cheaper

The three hour minimum is the counterweight the arithmetic above leaves out. Two movers carry a three hour minimum of $357, three movers $507, four movers $657, and five movers $807. On a job that genuinely finishes inside three hours, a bigger crew cannot save you anything, because you pay the minimum either way and the bigger minimum is the larger number.

A studio that two movers clear in two and a half hours costs the $357 minimum plus the flat $75 fuel fee. The same studio with three movers costs $507 plus $75, and it does not finish meaningfully sooner, because on a small apartment the constraint is the stairwell and the doorway rather than the number of hands. The crossover is roughly the point where the job runs past four hours. Below that, take the smaller crew.

Drive Time Is Billed at the Crew Rate Too

California bills local moves under the double drive time rule: the drive between your old address and your new one is counted twice and charged at your hourly rate. That rate is the crew rate, so a larger crew makes the drive more expensive as well as the labor. A forty minute drive is eighty billed minutes, which is about $159 at $119 an hour cash for two movers and about $225 at $169 an hour cash for three.

That rarely changes the answer on a full day move, where the drive is a small share of the bill. It does change the answer on a small load between two addresses a long way apart, where the drive is a real fraction of the total. What the Extra Mover Actually Does

With two movers, both of them carry, and the truck gets packed in bursts between trips. With three, one can stay at the truck building the load while the other two keep the flow of furniture coming, and a well built load is what stops a second trip. That is where most of the time saving in a three person crew actually comes from, not from walking faster.

A second truck is a different decision from a bigger crew. It costs $150 plus a second $75 fuel fee, and it only helps when the load genuinely will not fit or when the two addresses are far enough apart that a return trip would cost more than the second truck. On a tight street it can make things worse, because now two trucks are competing for the same legal parking.
